Number 1?

The Urban Institute reported Mississippi ranked, are you ready for this, first among all states in NAEP fourth grade reading scores.

Demographic Adjustment of Educational Performance: Scores on standardized tests may be "demographically adjusted" to account for variations in the socioeconomic or ethnic makeup of different schools or states, providing a more equitable view of performance.

Boom!

Awaiting wailing and gnashing of teeth from coastal liberals.

The reading scores from the COJ schools were obviously excluded

It's the "demographically adjusted" part that sheds light on this mystery.

But by all means , lets ruin this improvement by implementing school choice which has led to academic regression in virtually every state in which it has been implemented. It will definitely be as successful as the charter schools which our all knowing legislators assured us would drastically improve education. [ [Charters are among the worst performing in the state every year]

Not to be negative, but note the word "adjusted". These appear to be not the actual scores, but rather the scores they would have earned if the world was a progressive heaven.

I told people JPS was cheating back in 2020.... The entire system is cooking the books lol.... Everybody wants to believe in fairytales while the kids get pushed through and administrators get bonuses and job promotions.... #reset

I wonder what the raw score is before the adjustments?

What Does "Demographically Adjusted" Mean?

With Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana all in the top half, I’ve got to be very skeptical.

“Demographically adjusted” in the context of test scores (like the NAEP reading scores in your table) means the results have been statistically corrected to account for differences in the demographic makeup of each state’s student population.

Normally, test scores can be influenced by factors such as:
• Socioeconomic status (income, parental education, free/reduced lunch eligibility)
• Race and ethnicity
• English language learner status
• Special education status

Because the proportions of these groups vary widely across states, raw scores alone don’t give a clean apples-to-apples comparison.

What adjustment does:
• Analysts build a statistical model to “level the playing field.”
• Each state’s scores are adjusted as if they had the same demographic composition (for example, the national average demographic mix).
• This way, differences in the adjusted scores are more reflective of differences in educational performance, not just demographics.

Why it matters:
• Without adjustment: A state with more disadvantaged students may appear to be doing worse, even if its schools are very effective.
• With adjustment: We can better evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and school systems by controlling for outside demographic factors.

👉 In short: Demographically adjusted scores are meant to compare states on how well they educate students, independent of differences in the student populations they serve.

Appears that the unadjusted scores have Mississippi at a respectable 9th place.

Way to go kids. Keep reading those books & cut back on IPads! 👍👍

Meanwhile in the Capitol our mental giant governor Tater Tott is patting himself on the back.

Link? Put up.

Is this like grading on the curve?

There is a complete disconnect between this post and the “We are Stupid” post yesterday about Mississippi having the lowest IQ’s in the country.

The Urban Institute is a Washington, D.C.–based think tank that conducts economic and social policy research to "open minds, shape decisions, and offer solutions".[2] The institute receives funding from government contracts, foundations, and private donors.

The Urban Institute has been categorized as "nonpartisan",[3][4] "liberal",[5] and "left-leaning".

The Urban Institute was founded by LBJ. For those interested, urban.org

"Disadvantaged" reflects school system failures.

Statistics, it can be adjusted in any way to support a narrative. I agree with you on the point.

If anyone believes Mississippi - who has a known teacher shortage, and which is getting worse by the day - is #1 in reading scores for any grade, your gullibility in falling for an obvious fraud is noted.
The Mississippi DOE is approx. 5,160 short in its personnel, and that number doesn't even reflect the "revolving door" of folks trying to work in the system, but who refuse to play ball with phone-baloney attendance or grade reporting, so they leave sooner than later. Biggest scam in MS history.....but hey, my my neighbor's sister-in-law Misty Dawn has a "good" job at the local school with benefits and PERS where she gets to help kids. sarc

#1 my ass.

Tater needs to put his kids in the public school in the district he lives in and quit begging for welfare so they can afford Jackson Prep.

Mississippi returned to teaching children to read by using phonetics. Other states have noticed our increasing success rates and are adopting phonetics in their reading programs. Good job, Mississippi. Parents - keep reading to your young children and teaching them the alphabet before they start first grade. That's the best approach of all.

Who are we to believe? Tate Reeves or The Tate Record?

I'm sitting here reading the October 1, 2025 edition of the Tate Record (home of Trey Lamar).

On the back page, there are two articles as follows:

1) Fewer Mississippi Schools earn "C" or higher in 2025. (Magnolia Tribune)

One statement found in article: "Transforming Districts that have struggled for years is complex work that does not happen overnight", Dr. Evans said.

2) As statewide scores dip, state education leaders ponder their next step. (Mississippi Today)

One statement found in article: For the first time in years, the performance of Mississippi schools and districts fell from the previous academic year, according to state educational rankings released Thursday.

"Without adjustment: A state with more disadvantaged students may appear to be doing worse, even if its schools are very effective."

Anyone care to wade into the bog and explain that?

I'll start: How does one measure a school's effectiveness by any means other than student progress and achievement?

By how much the school’s administrators make?

Enabling racism and victimhood. That's called "adjustment".

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
