It's been 90 years since a true Saint of Jackson passed away. Dr. Julius Crisler, loved by many, forgotten by few. The obituaries describe a life well-lived and a reward well-earned. The Clarion-Ledger eulogized him on September 14, 1935.
Dr. Crisler did not reflect the prevailing views of the white community of his time as his will directed the sale of his possessions and give the money gained to the poor - black and white.
Indeed, the black community honored Dr. Crisler.
How beloved was Dr. Crisler? Jackson women memorialized him through poetry published in the newspaper.
Even after his passing, Dr. Crisler's name looked over Jackson as it was used to push a school bond issue a year later.

Almighty God gave him talent and free will. He fully utilized those talents to the benefit of many.
He would be considered "woke" by many people today. What a real shame.
He was friends with the Mayo brothers of Mayo Clinic fame. Vacationed with them up in Minnehaha.
The man nor his obituaries have anything whatever to do with 'woke', but thanks for attempting to add your wokeness to the honorable gentleman and this thread, Goober.
12:18, why do you liberals have to screw up everything you touch? This has nothing to do with politics. Call Walgreens and refill your prescriptions.
Many of these names are familiar to me. Some are kin. Some are parts of the congregation I grew up in. There was a time when there were no surgeons in Mississippi, and very few doctors. Two efforts to establish medical services in Jackson to serve the entire state. One resulted in the Jackson intermarry that we now know as Baptist Hospital. The other came about when my uncle and me kenningtion traveled to the Midwest to talk to some Dominican nuns about coming here. This resulted in St Dominic's Hospital. Looking at today's medical corridor that stretches from Fondren, almost to Brandon, it's hard to imagine a Jackson without doctors, but it had to start somewhere.
I think your grandfather was a pallbearer
I think you mean Jackson Infirmary. It led to St. Dominic. What we now know as Baptist Hospital was founded by Dr. Harley Shands and Dr. John F. Hunter. We are grateful for these visionaries.
Well said, 2:13! I clicked on the thread because it’s a feel good subject free of controversy. Apparently, some people can’t stand that.
