Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued the following statement.
This is a very sad for the City of Jackson and its residents. A slim majority of the City Council has again voted down a garbage collection contract that would save the City millions of dollars, provide good paying jobs to Jackson residents and prevent us from enduring an unnecessary public health and environmental crisis.
Four members of the council, against the will of their three colleagues, have done this in favor of a specific vendor, one who was not the top-rated bid in the last two RFP processes and would cost the City millions of dollars more. (KF note: Top-rated bid with garbage carts)
Another RFP process will take at minimum 50 days. We also know – as does the council – that the overall costs in another RFP will dramatically increase. How do we know this? The vendors themselves have said so. The City of Jackson cannot afford this and that increase WILL be passed down to residents.
I want to also remind residents that I can only bring a scored and recommended contract forward. It is up to the council to approve it. It is abundantly clear that there is only one vendor the four council members will approve – and it is not based in the best interests of our residents. In fact, it is not based on the RFP process itself – which has been verified as legitimate by the council’s own attorney, and has followed all state procurement standards.
Our hearts go out to all the hardworking employees of Richards who have overcome great adversity to provide residents garbage collection services. We would also like to thank Working Together Jackson and other community activists for coming to today’s council meeting. I will continue to support the best interests of the community.
We will continue to fight to have garbage pickup in Jackson.

Mr. Mayor,
Please turn off the sad violin music. Most of us want "Two times a week without cart." It's time for you as a leader to LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE!
Over all, WM was doing a fine job. You can come up with negative anecdotes, but that's always possible when you choose to ignore the weight of the evidence.
I'm 80 years old. I can't maneuver a 96 gallon cart and I have no place to get it out of sight between pick-up days. Am I the only resident of Jackson who has similar issues? Am I the only resident who needs to put out black bags of debris, etc., during numerous weeks of the year?
With respect, Dan Hise
Racing on the interstates
Pot holes in virtually all city streets
Undrinkable water, if any water at all
Numerous educational expense paid trips for mayor, etc.
Highest murder rate in the country
One of the lowest per capita number of police personnel ratios in the country
Armed robberies downtown and all other sectors
Housing cost plummeting (I wonder why?).
Dumping of untreated waste products into the Pearl River.…
The President flew into the Jackson airport this week, but would not set foot or drive in or through the city.
Oh yeah, no garbage pick up available
One of the poorest cities in the USA
Abandoned motels, hotels, office buildings inhabited by homeless people (and homeless rats).
Other than these minor issues, Jackson is a nice place to live.k
Damn. The bullshit from this statement runneth over.
Shut up Chuck. You know where the airport is. Go take a working vacation to some functioning city. Let the City Council bring WM back and let them get back to providing the excellent service we had before you screwed it all up. You are an egotistical charlatan. You have caused the last several public health crisis because you are absolutely incompetent. You and your ignorant ass sister are an absolute joke.
Mayor:
TRY SUBMITTING A CONTRACT THAT DOESNT HAVE THE DAMN CARTS.
Sincerely,
Everyone
How many lies can you pack into one statement? The mayor has set a record with this one!
This is how it would look if his statement actually TOLD THE TRUTH:
"This is a very sad for the City of Jackson and its residents. A slim majority of the City Council has again voted down a garbage collection contract that was not the winning bid for twice weekly pickup without carts. I refuse to discuss the reasons why I won't present the winning bid for approval.
Four members of the council refused to support my effort to award the contract to the loser, whose contracts in New Orleans were lost due to chronically poor service.
Another RFP process will take at minimum 50 days. I've known this for the past year or more. However, I chose to sit on my ass until ONE DAY before my "emergency" contract expired to take any action. Brinksmanship at it's finest, right? I thought the prospect of no trash pickup would surely FORCE the council to approve the losing bid this time, even though they wouldn't do so the last 3 times.
Instead, to my shock and disappointment, 4 council members stood on principle AGAIN. Who does that? They should have given up, smiled, and bent over, just like the other 3.
It is abundantly clear that there is only one vendor the four council members will approve – the winning vendor that proved affordable, reliable service to Jackson for 20 years while also meeting minority participation requirements. That contract may be in the best interests of our residents, but it's not what I want, and I'm the one who matters.
I will continue to support the best interests of my own pocketbook and personal safety, without regard to public health or morals and ethics.
I will continue to fight for the losing bidder, Richards, despite the negative impacts on the city and it's people, which I couldn't care less about.
I have my priorities.
Sincerely,
Chowke Lumumbs"
“Four members of the council, against the will of their three colleagues,” “slim majority” . . . Uhhhh, Boy Wonder, that’s how local government and American-style democracy works. Guess you skipped that land majoring in “Free the [whatever].”
Nicely worded statement crafted by the mayor's public relations director. Sounds good if you didn't know, understand and care about the hx of this fiasco. Ironically, the mayor accuses those who voted against RD of doing what he has consistently done ---insisted on a particular vendor that he prefers. He keeps playing to the naiveté of his core constituency which usually serves him well. However, he should be aware everyone is not fooled. What now?
Looks like the state needs to take over garbage service too.

You forgot to add, "The previous President flew into Jackson and the Mayor refused to meet with the President and rejected the opportunity to address the above listed problems of the city with the nation's leader."
I wonder if Lumumba actually believes his own BS. He certainly shovels it with conviction.
Wow, I never would have thought that Hizzonner would blame this on the city council......not.
So he's just not going to do anything. Cool. Wonderful leadership as usual. Putting the people above self-interest as usual.
Who is getting the contract to supply the carts that no one wants??? follow the money...
Be honest, Mr. Mayor - Tell your audience what your relationship (or that of any of your family members) is to or with Richards Garbage Service.
While you falsely accuse a majority of council being solidly in favor of 'one and only one' provider, why exactly have you spent two years stalemating the process so YOU can get one particular service provider approved.
Belly up and, for once, be honest. What is your personal relationship with Richards?
Ain't nobody as damn stupid as you think they are.
Thanks Dan @1:48, Now how about taking up once a week with no cart? Seems to me if this city has no money, maybe we make some legitimate cuts.
Wonder when it dawns on him that the his way or the highway approach is not working?

Jan 2023, NOLA Richards fails again. Brings in Jackson employees.
This is the wunnerful company he keeps bringing up??? But, but, they minority owned!!!!
Richard's must be short handed and short trucked: they refuse to pick up limbs cut to three feet long, neatly tied and stacked, to toss into their truck along with bagged garbage. And five times was unable to consistently take all the trash set out in my neighborhood, postponing until next day or next garbage day to catch up.
WM was consistently dependable and took the short sawed limbs. For Jackson's next parade, have Sister Rukia pull our little tyrant in a 96 gallon wheeled cart, with fish offal, shouting "Free the Mayor, Free the Mayor!"
@2:31 PM - Well played. You won today's internet!
I fully expect the mayors knees to be broken now. The tit for tat deal is ovah
I imagine the Mayor would have better luck with the Council if RD used another IT pro instead if his personal Xpert Professional Solutions.
It’s the IT company that Richards is hiring. Everyone knows it’s a direct link to the Mayor.
Just saw a TV report on the meeting and the mayor's comments afterward. Ol' Choke-a-chicken acted with the expected hissy fit on camera, definitely holding a temper tantrum...
See now Mr mayor if you only went with what the console said last year we wouldn't be in This mess and have a lot more money because nobody would of been sueing
Honest question- Why does the council have an issue with XPS here? No hell was raised with the sweet deal and enormous invoices at the airport.
The Chokester is obviously the victim here.
Richards: "You promised that this was a done deal!"
Chowke: "I know. I thought that I had the votes, right?"
Richards: "You had better get a good orthopedic surgeon!"
Chowke: " I am going to do a prime time interview on CNN and put the pressure on the holdouts on the Council."
Richards: "Make it fast or you will have a bad limp, capiche? Don't let the horse's head on your pillow scare you. It's just a reminder, right?"
The mayor isn’t the problem but the 3 jackasses who voted against the bill and the fool who abstained. The existing contract and services were fine. But those who opposed did so for political and self serving interests. Foote, Banks, Stokes, and Grizzell should be challenged during reelection. Meanwhile we will be dumping our trash at their f… doors.
No palm grease for Chowke this week. So sad.
Soooo the city of Jackson, our capitol, will smell like the landfill off county line road in a few weeks. “May showers bring boo boo flowers” from William Shake’Nbake’s play A Midsummers Landfill
MThompson, if you are going to spew venom, with nothing to back it up (did so for political and selff serving interests) --- at least get the players correct. Maybe you need a program; I'm sure the Mayor's PR team can get you better talking points.
But in the meantime, please explain why those four (whichever the correct names are) are the jackasses, and are doing things for self-serving interests, rather than the Mayor who refuses to budge from his jackass self-serving position. Hard to figure how you reached your conclusion so a little background and detail would be helpful.
Moron at 7:35. You lose total credibility when you can't count votes correctly.
M Thompson …..and I’ll be dumping mine at Antard’s!
All of the subs in the Richards contract appear to be connected to the Maoyr. Hmmm
If he spent as much energy on the water system, Jackson would still be in control. Hmmm
MT, you mean Foote, Banks, Stokes, Hartley, (not Grizzell).
There is no Xpert Professional Solutions registered with the SoS's office. Y’all sure that’s the company’s name?
Kingfish:
Did you know that the address listed on page 2 of Expert Professional Solutions, LLC’s 2022 Annual Report filed with the MS Secretary of State office is also the same PO Box used by the Jackson chapter of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement?
What a coincidence, right?
RIGHT.....
MThompson - In the interest of public disclosure, putting aside Chokwe's relationship with Richards, what's your relationship with the mair?
How hard would it be for the city to hire several uninspired, unemployed, people like I am sure 7:35 PM (above) is, to ride on the back of a trash truck to pick up the trash?
Will there be some Radio Free Stokes we can listen to this morning? I know I’m looking forward to it.
Mr. Mair - This Mthompson. I been posting in your favor. So, remember me when time come to hand out some them ProJect cOrdeanaturs, right. I like me a dodge truck too.Got my on YETi so need for that.
11:52 PM- https://prabuddha.us/index.php/pjse/article/download/11/12/
Not a coincidence.
Lumumba's screaming hysterics are comical and feigned:
https://www.wapt.com/article/vote-leaves-jackson-without-trash-pickup-company/43486857
The shiggety and grift on the left continues.
Most of the creeks in Jackson are full of sewage that stink in the heat including the one next to my house. About a year ago the City put up signs warning of the danger. So the trash probably can't make it worse.
Yo Chowke, we will vote for Richards as soon as you release all of the missing JPD crime statistics. Right?
7:35 Everyone is right to call you & the Mair out. If you can’t count to four, then don’t expect us to listen to you or the Mayor! He waited until the last minute before contract ran out to APPEAR to call a meeting. He was asked by the Majority of the council Months ago when he was over ruled to start the RFP process; however, he chose to appeal to the SC and was over ruled again. Where are the records showing Chockwe’s repayment of Legal Fees and Court Cost that he is legally obligated to pay. The COJ needs those DOLLARS paid immediately. Ted cannot help him with these failures no more than the Mayor saying it DIDN’T matter what SC Judges ruled. I beg to differ as the SC sets the rules under the Laws of MS straight if any citizen so chooses to appeal! You learned that if you indeed have a Law Degree Mr. Mayor!
It is not possible to have a worse mayor that Lumumba. He will get re-elected as almost all middle class black Jacksonians have left our city for the suburbs and we are left with the bottom of the class, which are so brain dead they will buy his bullshit.
@9:02 PM Double negatives are not my strong suit; thus my response would be something like “it is highly likely, and probably a near certainty, that CAL is the worst mayor in American history.” He sucks that badly.
Now, can someone explain to me why Stokes makes a motion to substitute WM for RD in the contract then abstains from the vote on RD?
