The city of Jackson issued the following statement.
To assist residents with their garbage, the City of Jackson has scheduled trash drop-off times and locations for Thursday and Friday.
Trash drop off: Thursday & Friday
Dumpsters will be available for residents between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the parking lot of the Old Dillards at the Metrocenter Mall. This is the City’s ONLY dump site. ONLY household trash can be dropped off.
Please see additional details below:
- Trash must be in a contractor/commercial trash can bag
- Bags must be securely tied and contained in the vehicle
- All trash must be contained in the tied contractor/trash bag
- No tires, bulk items, no construction material, or hazardous waste will be accepted
This is an imperfect and temporary solution for residents as we continue to work towards securing a garbage collection vendor.

"This is the city's only site" --- what a crock! One site with a couple of dumpstere for a city of 150,000.
And Virgi in her infinite lack of wisdom says the city can't afford to do anything like putting out dumpsters.
The city has been paying Richards over $800,000 a month for collection, which they will not be paying for April - and for whatever period of time there is no collection. That would pay for a lot of dumpsters.
The Mayor says they can't put out more dumpsters because the city doesn't have trucks to haul them off.
Guess he has never really had to do anything workwise, or even been around it. When you contract for a dumpster, the company delivers it with their truck and picks it up with their truck. They haul it to a location where they can dump it. In the city's case, they would haul it to WM's transfer station which is where Richards has been taking the garbage it collected - because that is who the city has a contract with to dispose of the garbage once its collected.
The cost for dumping the dumpsters is a current cost of the city - it would not increase because of dumpsters - in fact it would decrease. Its based on tonnage, which should decrease during this 'crisis' with many people disposing of their trash at locations outside the city these days.
But - all that would require thinking. And a desire to at least try to mitigate their screwup. Neither of which exists with the Mayor and with counciilmembers like the wise old Virgi.
How convenient. It only takes 46 minutes of driving from my house and back to drop off garbage.
So if you work and your taxes pay the city govt you get a big F*CK YOU. How about after hours for people at work!?!
There is nothing abnormal about the how the city of Jackson is being run just look around.
Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.

Citizens of Jackson who have never lived anywhere else dont really know what kind of 3rd world country type shithole they are living in. That’s the only reason Lubumba can get away with this kind of abuse.
Someone going to open each bag to make sure there are no hazardous wastes inside, right?
I would dare to say, that most working individuals work 8AM-5PM. Those hours hamper the average person.
11:17, people who work for a living and pay their taxes don’t matter anymore, we are just here to work til we die and pay for the non-workers who live off the gubmint tit!
Those times will work great for those that don’t have to work til 5:00. I guess I’ll leave the trash in my trunk and use my lunch break to drop it off. At least the water was on this morning. I suppose we can’t have it all.
Contractor bags cost a whole lot of money and are not available at every convenience store! Bet the big places where you buy them are about out of bags anyway!
11:08 makes sense to me!
Bet the Mayor doesn't want to do business with WM is why he is saying all this. It is ironic that
WM is the company that could provide for many dumpsters throughout the City and could pick them up and change them out. Agree, people with jobs cannot get to a dumpster between 8:00 and 2:00. Is there a problem with vandalism if the large containers are left all night? Can security be provided at these sites? The City Fathers (and Mothers)need to be proactive and consider the health of their citizens in this new crisis. And it can easily turn into a true health crisis.
I don't understand why the city can't contact one of 40 roll-off dumpster vendors in the city and use them?
Pick 20 companies and give them 5 sites each. Let them handle emptying. The City owns the dump.
@11:08
You oughta email that to city hall, Public Works, and every council member. Cc Lumumba on every single one, send 20 directly to his email address and Cc DEQ, Health, the Governor, and every legislator who represents any part of the city.
SERIOUSLY.
I’m pretty sure you’re right about Lumumba. I bet he has never broken a sweat in his life. He must’ve been a coddled momma’s boy, because he has no problem-solving skills and is one of the least resouceful human beings to ever hold public office.
Please be patient, this is only temporary, like
Undrinkable water, if any at all.
Understaffed and poorly trained police dept.
Highest MURDER rate in the USA
Roads that tear up your automobile
Bums sleeping in abandoned downtown Jackson buildings
Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars going to “elite” lawyers
Most of whom do not live in Jackson.
Football games where 80 plus cars are broken into.
Property values plummeting while suburb prices are escalating.
Remember, as the mayor says, be patient, this is just temporary.
Remember all this at election time.and don't vote for these idiots just because they give you a barbecue
11:08 and 12:10, you are 100% correct.
Moreover the City could come the drop off sites around the City to make them more convenient to all of its residents. 1-2 days in south Jackson, 1-2 days in north Jackson, 1-2 days in west Jackson, 1-2 days in east Jackson 1-2 days, 1-2 days in downtown, etc.
But the Mayor will not use or apply any one of the number of solutions to the dumpster problem, and you know why ? Like the water issue, he wants the situation to get worse and for MDEQ to start fining the City, so he can try to blame that too on the Council, when once again all of this is his fault.
The guy is a psychopath.
Guess he has never really had to do anything workwise, or even been around it. When you contract for a dumpster, the company delivers it with their truck and picks it up with their truck. Someone please tell me this is not true? The mayor got rid of WM and hired Richards. Richards does not have a place to dump the trash so they take it to WM where they put it in WM trucks to haul to WM's dump. Is that some sort of joke or is he really that ignorant?
These dumpsters available on the weekend?
Or do Jacksonians just need to wait until next week with the trash if they can't get there today or tomorrow?
There is a real limit to the number of dumpsters available to the Mair for hire on short notice.
Due to the nature of the situation any reasonable business will be reluctant to incurr costs to add short term or long term capacity for a customer such as City of Jackson.
A reasonable business will be sure not to provide poor service to existing customers due to unforseen demand by a new customer.
“Poor planning on your part does not necessitate an emergency on mine.”
Then too, a reasonable business does it's best to not take on new customers that are more trouble than they are worth. Whether slow or no-pays, those with unreasonable demands, or those that check other PITA boxes. In short, them are the customers a reasonable businees needs to fire!
That Metrocenter location is convenient for the Eastovers, Belhavians and
Fondrenites.
On an unrelated note, I wonder how the "Stop Trashing Jackson" campaign is going these days.

Sharp observation. The mayor will cover the whole city in rats (followed by cotton mouths) before using idle garbage fees to spread 20+ dumpsters around the City "because we just can't do that" he lied, meaning "No way I'm lettin my city rent WM dumpsters!"
I have been reading the posts for a long time and know what the mayor has in mind. When the rats get as big as large dogs the mayor is going to go through Jackson wearing tights playing a flute and all of the rats will follow him.
