Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement.
Today, I vetoed two bills that had the
potential to seriously increase the cost of health care in Mississippi.
One is a bad idea, and I can’t see myself supporting it. One is a good
idea that just includes some correctable mistakes. Here’s what they do:
“The first one would basically give the Insurance Commission the ability
to set rates for all health insurance. They can massively fine private
insurance if they aren’t “equitable” enough. It’s not what you expect in
Mississippi, but that’s why we read every bill closely! There’s also a
bill to reform a process known as Prior Authorization. That’s how
insurance companies inform providers whether a procedure or drug is
covered. This bill would force insurance companies to give an answer
more quickly, which is positive. However, it also had some unintended
consequences.
“The bill has a number of technical components. These include
administrative hearings that are in an incorrect place, increased costs
for Medicaid, and other issues that cause me not to be comfortable
signing it. But I am hopeful that we can get a better bill done soon.
We’re closely reviewing every bill because that’s what you hired me to
do. 76 bills this week—just 2 vetoes! Good folks can sometimes let bad
things past the goalie, and we’re the last stop before disastrous
consequences like massively increased healthcare costs.”

Does Tate really think we are so simple that all he has to do to poison the well is throw the word "equitable" into the water? Apparenlty so.
Also a cute soccer reference thrown in with the use of the word 'Goalie'.
I remember when the 'pandemic' first hit, he decided to fly off to soccer games in a foreign country and had to get a private flight to return to Mississippi due to impending airline covid- restrictions.
The last thing this state needs is to give Insurance Commissioner, State Fire Marshal and issuer of matchbooks Chaney more authority.
If we didn't learn enough about his arrogance and zeal for power during the Blue Cross-UMMC standoff, we were asleep.
An angry old Insurance Commissioner with a BIC Pen is just as dangerous as a Millsaps graduated, vindictive governor with a veto pen.
No commissioner in this state should have legislative authority.
Good folks can sometimes let bad things past the goalie, and we’re the last stop….
Tate should not be making up his own sports analogies.
Tate seems to miss that health care policy for a Governor and Insurance Commissioner is of have access to and delivery of the best possible health care.
It is NOT to make the insurance industry more profitable. It is not to make sure agents and doctors and hospitals make more money.
That insurance companies and political appointees can dictate which medicine brands I can take and what doctor I can see is about as communistic and socialistic...fattening the wallet of a commissioner or a comrade at the expense of free choice.
We had a good system in after WWII.It was getting better and better at health care, but greedy bastards wrecked it. The "Party" is my doctor and tells my doctor what I need and don't need.

Last defensive player at the back of the line-up is known as the "Sweeper", whose job is to head away, kick away or pass away an incoming ball approaching a dangerous area from which the opposing offense could shoot on goal.
The Govetnor's soccer analogy is just fine.
Sweeper plays in front of Goalie, so is the last defensive field player, often captain of the Defense who calls out instructions to them.
5:21am plus 1, here.
Anything that keeps Cheney less in control is a good thing.
Not a Tate fan, but agree with him here. If people would simply pick and choose who to support based on the factual issues out outcomes, rather than who they simply don't like...we'd all be better off.
Not a fan of Tater...but his reasoning on this is sound.
He's talking about Hockey. Duh. But, yes, still another sport that Americans don't watch.

8:26 clearly hasn't been around football since the early '90s. Sweepers only play in 8-year-old games these days.
Also, the Insurance industry has a self-appointed regulator. Chaney isn't all-powerful as evidenced by his inability to force UMMC or BCBS to do anything during that debacle. Insurance is a scam, anyway.
Looks like Tater has gone woke. Boo Tater Tot!
Reeves, +7, likely voters, thank you.
s/ Forgotten Democrats for Governor
Just noting the the governor contradicts himself from one veto message to the other. At the very least our leaders should be consistent in their actions.
What seems to be happening here is that Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney is trying to protect the consumer by helping citizens get timely information in a health care situation while the governor seems to be siding with big insurance. Do you honestly think insurance companies care about helping consumers without someone like Chaney forcing them to.
Good folks can sometimes let bad things past the goalie, and we’re the last stop….
All you player wannabees, there IS no 'stop' beyond the goalie. In any sport.
Is Tate suggesting HE is the goalie defending against a ball that's been advanced down the field by 97% of all the players on the field?
