Rez to Release More Water

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District issued the following statement.

Following this morning’s conference call with the National Weather Service, Pearl River Valley Water Supply District increased the discharge from Barnett Reservoir to 45,000 CFS.

The unprecedented amount of rain over the last two days has yielded a predicted inflow to the lake of 56,000 CFS. The lake currently stands at 298.0 feet above mean sea level.

The NWS predicts the 45,000 CFS discharge will result in a river level in Jackson at Highway 80 of 34 feet. Water will be in several streets in Jackson.

It is likely that the discharge will have to be increased again during the next several days, which could result in water entering homes. By Tuesday the river could go to 36 feet.

Residents in low-lying areas should take precautions now. This high water event is predicted to last 7 – 10 days.

36' will be a real problem especially considering the empty suit who is at the helm of Jackson at this time.

Chowke will be able to blame the flooding, pot holes, and low water pressure on these releases, along with white flight, gunshows, open carry, and a vast right wing conspiracy.

No biggey; Chowke can't see the flooding from his gated compound nor from his Atlanta 5* hotel.

Sounds like the Rez might have learned something from the past. In 1979, there was a 21" rainfall at the headwaters of the Pearl, in Neshoba County on Sunday night through Monday. It hit Jackson on Friday, leading to the Easter flood.

Yesterday, there was 15" of rainfall in Neshoba County and east Mississippi - it will be hitting the Rez soon. The difference this year is that Jackson also got heavy rains (5" yesterday in the city, a record rainfall for Jackson.)

Glad the Rez is dumping some of that 298.0 feet - would hate to see that new parkway on the lower part of the dam be found hung up at the bridge on Lakeland.

Yikes! Remember what 36 Feet was like in 2020?...

One way to rinse the raw sewage and trash out of Jackson and on down stream….

The forecast is for 36' on Monday/Tuesday timeframe. That should douche out the boo boo in Jackson.

Interesting tidbit from the NWS regarding Pearl River flood-stage impacts:

24 (feet) The Jackson waste water treatment plant loses its natural outflow and must initiate pumping.

"Captain! We can't hold the boo-boo any longer! Permission to pump!..."

JPS Math word problem said...

The all time record Pearl River gauge reading at the Highway 80 gauge in Jackson was 43.28 feet in the 1979 flood. Certain homes had water up to the eaves of the roofs, more or less 8 feet above the floor of the home at that time. If the river gauge at Highway 80 reads 36 feet, how wet will your shit be, right?

Let er rip!

"Captain! We can't hold the boo-boo any longer! Permission to pump!..."

Worse than that.

It means they must pump the treated effluent to maintain treatment operations.

If the pumping doesn't operate properly for some reason (why would it?) then the boo-boo treatment plant doesn't treat the boo-boo.

At that point it probably becomes 'sh*t flows down hill' to a significat degree.

This may get damn ugly.

“We’re seeing right now about 70,000 cubic feet per second coming into the reservoir, which would give us approximately 36 feet on the Pearl River gauge,” he said. “On the gauge at Lakeland, [it is expected to be] 41.5 feet Monday afternoon.”

This is will give the mayor more doom and glood climate change ammunition.

Mayor will just claim he solved the water pressure problem!

It seems it's always a crisis situation after these big rain events. Why would they not start dumping water at a more manageable rate when they realized the water it was producing was flooding Dallas 4-5 days ago? So what if they miss the mark and the rez is down a little low for a little while, it'll catch back up.

"Give it 10 days and it will be water under the bridge, right?"

You A-holes sitting high and dry need to watch your mouth. This is not anything to joke about. This is about people losing their homes! You are some sick individuals...

@5:59 PM Chill out snowflake. @4:15 PM is making fun of Chowke, and not minimizing the flooding potential.

Probly shouldn't have bought/built in a floodplain.

@2:32 Where can I read more about this? Is there a real engineer in the house that can give a professional assessment of such a situation before, during, and after a levee break?

i'm not an engineer, or an expert at any of this. but, my daughter's girl scout troop toured the spillway one day and they explained, from what i remember, that if the water gets too high in the reservoir, that gravel section close to shaggy's gives way and the reservoir starts to empty out from that location. the houses around the reservoir will not flood.

the water goes across both streets and is supposed to be routed back to the pearl by the geography of the surrounding land.

there are no explosives at all buried in that section. the water just starts washing out that gravel, and then there is nothing you can do to stop it. the reservoir will drain until it stops. it won't empty out, but the flooding downstream caused by that happening is gonna be much worse that the flooding caused by releasing extra water through the gates.

it sucks for anyone affected.

The emergency spillway will not break. The gates at the reservoir can release a maximum of 250,000 cfs. Even in the Easter flood of 1979 the reservoir only released about 125,000 cfs. Without going into a long explanation, the reservoir (since 1964) has been very useful in keeping Jackson and everything South of the dam from flooding a lot worse. FYI: I do not live at the reservoir.

From the NWS (NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE)
The inflow of water into the Ross Barnett Reservoir reached a peak of 162,000 cfs around midnight on April 16th, 1979, and the Ross Barnett reached its peak discharge of 125,000 cfs around 9:30 am on Easter Sunday on April 15th, 1979. The Pearl rapidly rose and finally reached a record crest of 43.28 feet at 3:00 pm on April 17th, 1979.

It sure would be nice to have some flood control right now a la the one lake project.

I hope the self-involved white Bourgeois environmentalists who have been opposing this are over in East Jackson stacking sandbags for the houses of those who they’ve forced flooding on behalf of some turtle no one has ever heard of. The pearl river keeper crowd are the ones that are directly responsible for all of this mess right now. They should at least have the decency to look the people they’ve screwed in the eye while their homes flood.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
