MDOT issued the following statement and video.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is nearing the completion of a major reconstruction project on U.S. Highway 49 in Rankin County.
Currently, both directions of U.S. 49 are in the six-lane configuration from the end of the project in Richland to Cleary Road. Crews anticipate the roadway being opened to six lanes from the end of the project through Florence by tomorrow, Friday, July 1. Plans call for all six lanes being fully opened to traffic by the end of next week.
“We are happy to announce that this reconstruction project is almost finished, however we ask everyone to remain cautious when traveling the area as there will still be workers and daily lane closures,” said Central Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons. “After next week, crews will have traffic opened back up to six lanes following the daily lane closures. These lane closures are necessary for crews to finish paving shoulders and turn lanes at intersections throughout the project.”
The massive infrastructure improvement project calls for the reconstruction of 7.5 miles of U.S. 49 from Florence to Richland. Work began in the fall of 2017 and remains on track to be completed by late summer 2022. Once complete, there will be three travel lanes and a shoulder in each direction.
Highway work zones are meant to protect the traveling public and the highway workers on the side of the road. Highway work zones can be found throughout the state and often present unfamiliar traffic conditions. Examples of common work zones found on Mississippi highways and a complete list of tips can be found at GoMDOT.com/drivesmartms.

Not to be cynical, well, maybe a little, but this will be the new dragstrip for the Jackistan yutes, and maybe some "donut" demonstrations.
You read it here first.
Better check the temp in hell
I love that they attached "proof" because they knew nobody would believe them.
5 years to build 7 miles of roadway? And they're PROUD of themselves?!?!
Will racing be allowed or is that only on I-55?
N0. It is not even close and it’s rainy. Government and their private contractors sure do see us as stupid.
Now, if they can just get all the stoplights to sync instead of having to start and stop all the time.
New housing starts are going to explode in South Rankin county.
As long as there are orange barrels, cones and sticks as well as contractor vehicles along with the occasional MDOT truck, it ain't done.
@12:40 HELL
More like 25 years…..someone got the good ole boy treatment to get this gig!
MDOT and Rankin County have successfully moved the orange barrels and lane closures to Brandon. Specifically on Highway 80 between Crossgates and the Value Road intersection. Down to one lane either way with NO workers and minimal equipment on the job. The west bound lane closure is obviously for a port-a-john in one spot and a small pile of gravel in another. It's absurd.
Gentlemen, yutes, thugs, and misc. juvenile delinquents, start your engines!
It does look like a very nice spot for a race or two and a better donut spot would be hard to find. For some reason I do not think the Jackistan yutes will be using it that much.
If you can't hit 200 mph in your Dodge Charger you are a bitch, bitch.
Initial resurfacing project set to commence next Friday,with Orange Barrels to be set Thursday night, business to be impacted by blocking barrles will be notified Friday Morning.
That will knock 60 seconds off the commute to the fried catfish places. And County Pleasin Meats. Cardiologists in the tri-county area are licking their chops.
Can they send the workers over here to help with this clown show on Hoy Rd? All this time for a big ass sidewalk
@12:40
Well that's better than taking three years to build a mile of sidewalk along Hoy Rd in Madison...without a doubt the most ridiculous "project" I've ever seen.
Yes...another high traffic highway(not) to help the good old boys.
And, probably still can't bear the weight of 18 wheelers.
How many quarter-miles will be marked off? Will 49 be recognized by the NHRA? Will there be bleachers?
12:34. Actually, they now mark tenths-of-miles. Someone lobbied to get a multimillion $$ contract to do this on the interstate system! Total waste of taxpayer $$!!!
That's great!!! Now there will three lanes of stop and go at 15 redlights. Can't wait for them to start adding more lights for a more f----- up commute. All that money could have been spent on a bypass around all those redlights!!!!
