Unable to eat, an Ole Miss student fights to save his esophagus after a Pike fraternity member (allegedly) sprayed bleach into his throat during a hazing incident six months ago.
Jackson Yerger and a hardy group of of Pike pledges survived Rush and anxiously awaited receiving their coveted pledge pins. Finally, the fraternity sent out the call: Be at the Pike House on October 11 to get pinned. Such events are anticipated milestones in many a college student's life and this ceremony was no exception.
A night of hazing began. The frat tested the pledges on the personal information of other pledges in their group. Failure of the test meant the flunkie had to be the designated driver. After the test, the pledges were blindfolded with neck ties, directed to yell the preamble "owe to a pledge" as Pikes threw beer on them as they were moving through the pinning process. The pledges had to eat some type of garbage. Typical harmless college fun.
The pledges were asked if they wanted water. Several said yes. Frat members allegedly sprayed bleach in the faces of several pledges and mouth of the 20 year-old Yerger. His mother, Robyn Yerger, said the Pike Chapter President was present during the hazing. Her son began vomiting. Another pledge member was taken to the Baptist Hospital in Oxford due to injury to his eyes. The extent of his injury is not known.
What should have been a night of fun turned into a life of hell began for young Yerger. He was diagnosed with Severe Erosive Esohpagitis Grade 4 due to chemical ingestion. The injury was classified as an alkaline burn. He lost 50 lbs. Unable to eat, he survives on a diet of protein shakes and macaroni & cheese. Needless to say, the young man suffers from depression and anxiety when he should be enjoying the flower of his youth. The Yergers held out hope until they received more bad news at his most recent exam on March 25. His body is trying to heal. It produces new esophageal tissue. Unfortunately, what remains of his esophagus rejects the new tissue, making recovery doubtful. Mrs. Yerger said:
His prognosis is unclear and will face a life long battle with recovery. He is likely to develop Barrett's Esophageal, Esophageal cancer, faces potentially removing 90% of his esophagus and relocating his stomach, all significantly decreasing his life span. We will start our journey at MD Anderson in Houston in the next 45-60 days as the esophagus has not shown signs of healing after 6 months of treatment.
The stomach-relocation surgery will be "life-altering." The injury increases his risk of esophageal cancer. The stomach, as well as the acid it produces, will be much closer to his throat. He will have to eat at least three hours before sleeping. It is affected to cause a loss of some teeth as well. He will probably need a feeding tube for several months after the surgery.
Mrs. Yerger said no one at Ole Miss contacted her nor her family. "It's been a little bit hard to swallow that no one has called and asked how Jackson is doing," said the mother. She tried to speak to Ole Miss officials when she visits the school but they "push her off" to Tracy Murray. Mr. Murray is the Director of Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct. She said he told her the university was reviewing policies.
Her son lives on a diet of macaroni and cheese. She wonders if the national organization could have prevented a recent hazing death in Ohio if it had paid attention to what happened to her son. She said "we thought this would heal but did not know the extent of his injury until two weeks ago."
His pledge brothers "rallied around him" but the fraternity leadership hasn't contacted him.
She said University of Mississippi police arrested Jimmy Higgins and charged him with aggravated assault. Mrs. Yerger said Lieutenant Caradine told her she would present the case to the grand jury instead of a prosecutor. The case has not been presented to a grand jury. The next grand jury meets in June. Several calls to the District Attorney yielded no information.
The police report states James Higgins was arrested on November 17, 2020 for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon. It also provides a brief narrative of what allegedly took place at the Pike House:
XXX also updated me on a recent incident that occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2020, located at house. During this time, the anonymous reporting party stated at this meeting along with previous Sunday meetings he and other members started pledge tests, change into khakis, a blazer, button up shirt, and tie. The anonymous reporting party stated once they changed into their attire, they were led up the stairs where they were blindfolded with their ties and were asked to sit in the hallway. The anonymous reporting stated the actives yelled, screamed, threw liquids, and things on the pledges. The reporting party stated the pledges had to do wall squats or "90" against the wall while reciting phrases. The anonymous reporting party stated at this particular Sunday meeting, while everyone was blindfolded, an active grabbed a bottle of bleach or surface cleaner and started spraying it on a few pledges. During this time, one of the pledges threw up from inhaling some of the substances in his mouth, and another one had to go to the hospital because the bleach got into his eyes. The anonymous reporting party was asked how was he aware of the acts that took place. The anonymous reporting party stated he became aware of the incident because he was in the hallway and witnessed the act(s) when it occurred.
The Yergers reported the incident to the police but discovered the police were already investigating an earlier hazing incident at the fraternity.
Kingfish note: Jackson has a different last name from his mother. His mother's last name was used.
The original opening sentence used the word "poured." It is changed to "sprayed" although the fact remains the frat member allegedly delivered bleach into the victim's throat.

Ole Miss about to cut this young man a huge check to this young man.
Why the fuck do fraternities and sororities even exist anymore? You want to "give back to the community"? Join the fucking Rotary Club or something.
Maybe Lynn could weigh in on if this is good or bad for us?

Dammit Boyce, where are you? Reach out this family now! Do your job! This is inexcusable. A total failure of leadership. It certainly isn't Dr. Boyce's fault that this happened. But the fact that Dr. Boyce hasn't reached out to this family afterward is sickening.
The fraternity culture is one of the few that is worthy of being canceled. These thugs provide no benefit to the community except to normalize drunkenly abhorrent behavior.
Nothing will come out of this. Ole Miss does not care. Too many wealthy donors are members of these organizations.
Shouldn't the fraternity be the ones cutting the check rather than Ole Miss? Hopefully the family has retained the best representation money can buy.
But Ole Miss recently bragged that its endowment has reached $775 million - this is a university not going in anything that closely resembles a right direction - no values whatsoever, but lots of money.
https://news.olemiss.edu/um-endowment-builds-to-record-775-million/#:~:text=Long%2Dterm%20private%20giving%20supports%20scholarships%2C%20faculty%2C%20facilities%20and%20programming&text=OXFORD%2C%20Miss.,and%20a%20rising%20investment%20market.
I am a Pike. This chapter should be kicked off campus. Period.
Hopefully, the Yergers will sue the shit out of OM, the Pike fraternity organization, and the responsible individuals.
Why do people even join? If you put your fraternity or sorority membership on your job application it just screams you are stupid. The only reason you might still get the job is because they cannot find more intelligent people to do the job... or maybe because your daddy did some work behind the scenes...
One of the worst things I have heard. The mother fucker who did this should never see the light of day. Loose all the Greek bullshit.
@1:52
Frat brothers pay fellow frat brothers over 20% more than non frat brothers when hiring. It’s part of the pledge.
I was in a fraternity. College kids do stupid things. But when somebody comes up with a bright idea that has the potential to destroy everyone's future, one person, at least one person in the group is suppose to say wait a minute, we are about to go way too far. Let's back off. Apparently in this case, that didnt happen. That's concerning. These kids are our future, the ones shooting up jackson, the one having other kids drink bleach at Ole Miss, and the ones studying, making good grades, all are our future and will pull us up or down as a society. We collectively have to make our young people better thinkers. Until we do, all of our appliances will say made in China and stupid but preventable things like this will continue to happen while we are distracted calling each other liberals or conservatives.
No matter what school, the Pike(Pi Kappa Alpha) fraternity has always been a bunch of try hard douche bags with anger issues. I can site many issues with them from every school. The Pike fraternity has always had the reputation of taking things too far.
Ole Miss “winning the party again”.... why do adults send their kids there?
Wonder why Ole Miss is the only school in the state from which we hear this kind of stuff? Are their fools the only ones doing it?
YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE 2:24

It isn't like OM did this. It's not Ole Miss's fault. It was the fault of a stupid kid that just happened to be a Pike.
My fraternity pledges and initiates the same day. We were the first to do that and now there are over 15 fraternities and about 10 sororities that do the same. That way you can't haze someone as they are a member. The new members then go over an education program for 3 months.
If you want to stay in business or be able to obtain insurance you better change.
The National Phi Kappa Alpha Inc. AND UM should be writing big checks, and then permanently eliminating their worthless chapter from Oxford.
As I've said before, Ole Miss isn't a school: it's a DISEASE.
The University should be liable. This was entirely foreseeable and they were on notice of this kind of behavior. They failed to take steps to prevent this. The family should get somewhere in the $10-20 million range.
I have to believe the guy who did this was a known problem long before this incident. We either police ourselves or someone else will do it.
Shut fraternities down and charge criminally those responsible! prayers for this Yeager young man and his family. OM these parents trusted their children with you and you FAILED!
Sigma Phi Epsilon figured it out*! Shut down their Ole Miss chapter permanently.
All the fraternities and sororities had better have their nationals take a good close look into their Ole Miss chapters. There are probably at least a few more hidden bunghole chapters ready to have their own costly criminal debacles.
*Google James Meredith statue noose and SIG EP!
Shouldn’t he have done his due diligence before going to Ole Miss?
Why should I care?
Dumbass liberals expecting a handout to a frat.
Snowflake!
At least he.......,,..
These are the type of responses & attitudes that run rampant here. It’s not particular to the frat. If the parents are reading this—then welcome to the “dayum” club. Sucks doesn’t it? Maybe MD Anderson people can help him. No real help here.
For MANY years (going back to the early 1980s) the Pikes have been known to be the biggest partiers and the most brutal hazers of their pledges. I'm so sorry this had to happen. Now is the time for Ole Miss to act responsibly and terminate this fraternity from campus.
I agree with previous posters about why fraternities and sororities are even a thing anymore. Service to the community??? HA!
I'm an Ole Miss graduate, so I do know what I speak of.
It's all about money. There is no other damn reason why in the year 2021 party organizations which do little or nothing to promote academic growth are still affiliated with colleges and universities in this country. Let them operate as independent entities or not at all. All they really do is remind the public that institutions of higher learning are more than willing to compromise their so-called values in order to entertain the spoiled brat and get his/her parent's money. A stark reminder not to take them too seriously.
Ole Miss will handle this, naysayers notwithstanding. My fraternity (ATO) has been punished for various infractions and it came back stronger. Whether the Pikes come back stronger depends upon themselves. I hear the SAEs will come back strong and some of the evidence of that is already becoming apparent. Good for them. I wish them well. Fraternities still have a place in society.
Awful, disgusting incident. These kids should be severely punished. Shut down all fraternities so the good members of the Greek system (which make up the vast majority) have to suffer for a few bad apples? Absolutely not. We’re smarter than to react in such a childish manner.
"....WHAT? I had no earthly idea there was bleach in that spray bottle. I assumed it was water that we use to spray on the grill when it flames up...."
Seems bogus to me... If this was true the university/oxford police department would have already taken action when it supposedly happened. This story doesn’t add up.
the beautiful people of the SEC strike yet again
4:08 and 4:15 What the hell is so essential about a frat or sorority on a college campus? What do you mean "come back strong"? Got drunker, partied harder, collected more dues? We need better academics not better parties. If they want to get drunk do it off campus on their own dime with no liability or responsibility for a state institution. Why is that so hard?
Do we have laws to charge street gangs as an entire unit to take them all down at once? The only real difference between common street gangs and fraternities is their parents’ bank accounts.
"For MANY years (going back to the early 1980s) the Pikes have been known to be the most brutal hazers of their pledges. I'm so sorry this had to happen. Now is the time for Ole Miss to act responsibly and terminate this fraternity from campus"
Absolutely.
Pi Kappa Alpha should have been shut down during the 1970's.
Over the years, the Ole Miss administration has penalized many frats for much much much less.
However, many kids that survived the "Pike" abuse went on to become powerful politicians and major donors.
I know these facts.
I was up there during the 1980's.
Hell, I was even a Frat President.
( I had to meet with the Chancellor and the goofy Deans while they all ranted about frats ... anytime there were empty kegs rolling around the streets on a Sunday morning after a football weekend they went ballistic ).
We all did stupid things in our college days.
But it was only the Pikes that didn't give a shit about what might happen to kids that only wanted to join their chapter.
But during the last few years, the Ole Miss administration has been worried about damn 100 year old Confederate statues than watching the Pi Kappa Alpha frat continuing to abuse young kids only a few months out of High School.
Bottom line.
Shut the damn Ole Miss Pikes down once and for all.
I would say the same thing about my frat if they had done such horrendous hazing.
God . . . I hope this kid can recover !
You absolute GDI idiots out here saying, “why the fuck do fraternities even exist anymore,” need to shut the hell up. This does not reflect the entirety for one, and for two, you’re just poor and wishful thinking. You being poor has nothing to do with wether or not a fraternity gets to keep running and I’m sick and tired of you liberal sons of bitches complaining. I have been in IFC for years and this shit comes and goes as isolated events with one active that just acts like a dumbass and that active is punished every time, we try hard to preserve the fraternities after. So if you think again an entire group is a problem rather than an individual you better burn BLM alive you stupid shits. Thus, with a degree in psychology I can confirm that you saying this crap are poor, rather than literal. GO BE POOR SOMEWHERE ELSE
This is infuriating to me as a mother. These colleges need to step up to supervise and intervene. My sons pledge experience was each kid having to jump from a higher plane, you can predict the result of that one ! He actually self preserved and walked out in some of the outrageously dangerous tests of brotherhood.
I know this outstanding young man personally. No one can ever expect to have bleach sprayed in your face, or poured down your throat while blindfolded. This offender is a dangerous individual to think this is funny or would ever want these pledges to become brothers with him.
This will be a lifelong injury both physically and mentally. His college years are tarnished as well as trusting others.
Shame on you ole Miss! So worried reaching out to show compassion may appear as guilty of negligence or failing to provide protective oversight of these young men!
Nobody....and I mean nobody who was ever in a fraternity refers to fraternities as a “frat.”
Just doesn’t happen.
4:52, what’s “essential” about a football team? They have some pretty rough things that happen. We keep them around. It’s not up to us to determine what’s “essential.” Fraternities are institutions with deep histories that have a ton of good qualities and are still of strong interest to new members, relevant as they ever were. How about we just understand that college kids do REALLY dumb things sometimes. Punish those individuals. You don’t shut down an entire system because of a few bad apples in one chapter.
"You being poor has nothing to do with wether or not a fraternity gets to keep running "
You, on occasion, slipping into a classroom at a 3rd tier college in the 50th ranked state, had nothing to do with an actual education, either.
6:17, such as the duality of the southern fraternity. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. And to be honest, the connections pay dividends in the business world. These idiots doing crap like this are in it for the wrong reasons and give the Greek system a bad name, but fraternities have their merits.
5:50 You, sir, are a fine example of the type of person who should never be allowed to be involved in IFC at Ole Miss or any other university. Your comment is an illustration of everything that Ole Miss should be striving to overcome-racism, classism and low academic expectations.
@550. I was a GDI and then joined a frat. Don’t take this personal, but frats are nothing more than power hungry boys that think it’s acceptable to lie, cheat, harass, rape, steal, etc.
Your problem is that this stuff has been going on for decades and it hasn’t quit.
Screw the repressed frat boys.shut them all down before anyone else gets killed.
I was reading the alleged details here the I remembered it was time to ask:
Whatever happened to that well connected Hotty Toddy that was charged with kidnapping and beating his girlfriend?
Is he still locked up or has he been let out to turn his life around?
@1:12 you are a miserable and disgusting person. Using this poor young man and the tragic circumstances to attack someone is not just tasteless, it is horrible. I truly don’t know how you can attack someone using a horrific injury to a boy still in his teens. You disgust me and many other decent people.
@1:12 you are a miserable and disgusting person. Using this poor young man and the tragic circumstances to attack someone is not just tasteless, it is horrible. Ole Miss has a real problem and it is total lack of leadership.
7:52 He got early release and is home with mommy and daddy, presumably. Those who knew him at SA know the story and he has no friends.
Think for a minute that not one person in that membership stopped this person from burning these pledges. Why would you want to be in a club with people who could do this.
Stop calling any of the involved kids, each and every one is an adult. The one doing this is sadistic and likely still enrolled after assaulting a fellow student.
I have seen sadistic Pikes in action, it is not all of them but all of them do not stop the terrible ones. Seen it up close and real personal.
@8:24 Don’t slander this kid he’s been back at school with all his friends having a good time
In 30 years some of these yung thug ole miss frat rats will be calling the shots at ole miss same as daddy and granddaddy did in their turn.
Nothing will change.
Hotty Toddy Rot.
Maybe the Chemical Engineering Department at MSU can host a class on what chemicals can do to a persons body. 5:50 I cannot believe you are a graduate of OM with the vulgar hatred spewed from your mouth. Your parents did not get their money’s worth out of your education. Jackson Yerger’s mother can read all of this and has enough on her shoulders trying to be upbeat for her sons sake. Please do not use this language again. My prayers are for the innocent people whose lives will never be the same. I pray God uses this as a reaching moment. To show us we are our brothers keepers. I agree this chapter needs to be shut down. I also hope Ali’s parents get justice and Brandon Thesfield pays for her murder!
I do think the college has a responsibility in this. the kids could not go to class and had to be on campus and were told no parties , no football games, due to social distancing But yet, they are able to come together to haze each other and ruin each others health!!! Where is the faculty and the heads of departments? who was enforcing rules set by the University? they are to blame and should reach out , apologize, throw the frat off campus and write the damn check, NOW!!!
Everyone should be stomping and demanding this and any other organization doing things like this be closed indefinitely!
6:15 I did not say destroy the fraternities or prevent any student from joining them, I simply say they are not an essential part of a university so that the university has to assume liability or any responsibility for their crazy actions. If a student wants to be a Lutheran or a Catholic, or if he wants to join the shriners or rotary, go ahead, whatever they do is their business and their responsibility. The fraternities have proven they can routinely flaunt the rules of the schools that associate them. Let them all be off campus clubs. Don't compare it to the football team, which represents the university which hires it's coaches and controls it's activities.
The Pike’s are made up of some awful young men. They were not held accountable in high school and are still not being held accountable. The entire frat needs to be kicked off campus. Bless this family and what the office of Greek Life and Ole Miss is making them go through.
Google all the mentioned names above. BS call here. Nothing shows up. Didn't happen suckers.
If the incident happened on campus, UM is liable.
I seriously doubt @5:45 was a fraternity president or likely even a member. We were taught as pledges the term, “frat”, is demeaning to all fraternities. If anyone used it, we were corrected by actives. There are great chapters as well as terrible ones. If there is a terrible one, it can be for many reasons. But It’s usually a lack of leadership within the chapter and/or oversight from the university. I was part of a great chapter at great university. I had an awesome experience. I came to a huge university from a small MS town: I got to campus knowing very few people. When I pledged, I quickly made friends with several dozen other guys my age from diverse backgrounds. The years I was active in my fraternity were great. I have lifelong friends. The people I remain friends with that I graduated in my major, almost zero. If any fraternity has a rogue chapter that is abusing its members, pledges, or guests, it needs to be shutdown and have penalties (as criminally or civilly appropriate). But to make a blanket statement about all fraternities and/or sororities needing to be shutdown is misguided and ignorant. There were a number of fraternities at the university that I attended where GPA’s far exceeded the median student average. And there were and still are huge fundraisers for charities as well as community service projects. Of course there are band parties, mixers, etc. What’s wrong with that if the dean of students’ office is monitoring them, there’s law enforcement there, and there’s accountability within each fraternity chapter? I know my fraternity has been spending tons of time and money educating its members for well over 3 decades now on the dangers of hazing, alcohol & drug abuse, and other potentially life-altering issues. I’m also smart enough to know other fraternities & sororities so as well. It’s called sel-preservation: why would any organization willingly turn a blind eye or allow chapters to do stuff like happened at Ole Miss??? The justice and civil court systems need to work in this situation and may God bless those young men that were hurt by those punks. As for the other fraternity and sorority chapters doing their part to mind their own business and mold their members into better citizens, leave them alone. Good grief.
If ABC had half the balls of Shad White they might look into these campus underage drinking clubs that are tacitly endorsed by IHL.
As a member of an ole miss fraternity (Beta) I believe that this story is completely false! After one of our members kissed a pledging boy without his consent we got in a little hot water! Ole miss IFC acted swiftly and put restraints and suspensions on us. OM IFC does not let things slide involving pledges and fraternities!
AG Lynn Fitch won't do anything about this case. After all, she is a loyal Ole Miss supporter and we all know Ole Miss can't do anything wrong! She'll stay quite on this case.
This young man is not a Pike at Ole Miss.
" Flagship" university.......
To those of you who have posted that this is all bogus...what about the 'mother' who posted she 'personally knows this young man'? I'd like for that 'mother' to come back on and post something more convincing?
Why have we heard nothing from any employee of the university, either confirming or denying this situation? Where are the posters who stick fingers in salads? Where are the posts from fellow students who know whether or not this story is factual?
I don't give a rat's ass about students or alumni who still wear penny-loafers and letter-sweaters; however, I would like to know if this situation is reality or not.
Step up if you know for certain!
The yewt has a different last name than his mother. I used his mother's last name.
I never considered joining a fraternity, because, well duh! It looks to me like the feds could step in and apply the RICO statute.
And I see from the comments that Ole Miss is providing quality education:
"...you can't haze someone as they are a member."
Why not? If you're committing felonies against them, why does it matter if someone is a member?
"I'm an Ole Miss graduate, so I do know what I speak of."
That's quite possibly the ultimate oxymoron. I guess UM doesn't teach English.
A fraternity or sorority is an added opportunity for a freshman to meet and become friends with new people from different places.
There have always been " animal houses". They should be sanctioned by both the university and national chapter.
At colleges and universities with no Greek system, the young people manage to form their own exclusive groups. It's human nature.
Of course, James Higgins might should have never been accepted as a student as he probably thought, like a former President, that ingesting bleach( or other cleaning products) was ok.
"‘Collegiate’ does not mean ‘asinine,’ and rough stuff does not signify college spirit. Be sensible."

To 7:37 and 8:46 nay sayers have you read the police/incident report. The report speaks for itself, end of story. There is no justification to endanger a humans life unless you are defending your own in a life threatening incident. James Bowles Higgins along with Brandon Theesfeld deserve a. Trial by a jury and I pray it is a speedy one. Jackson Yerger please know God still has a plan for you and that you are much loved! Do not let these people take that away from you! Be still and know that I am God is His word! You are in our hearts & prayers!
The mindset that looks at one horrendous incident at a fraternity and kneejerks to "SHUT ALL GREEKS DONW!" is that same as one that sees a criminal use a 9mm to kill someone and kneejerks to "BAN ALL HANDGUNS!"
The persons who used the bleach and the organization that allowed it to happen should absolutely be held responsible. But should the Phi Mu sorority at Mississippi State or the Omega Psi Phi fraternity at Jackson State or the Kappa Alpha fraternity at Millsaps be banned because of the behavior of the Ole Miss Pikes?
It sounds to me like that's what you people who trumpet this line are suggesting.
As a member of Kappa Sigma at Ole Miss with some friends in Pike, I know that this story is extremely exaggerated and false and hate to see false news try to ruin a good fraternity. If this incident supposedly happened then they would have been kicked off months ago... stop spreading false news
Just gonna drop this here...
Attorney Daniel McGehee held a press conference with client Alexander Brougthon at the University of Tennessee near the Torchbearer statue on Volunteer Boulevard Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012. McGehee and Broughton both spoke about an alleged alcohol enema incident involving Broughton, who was also a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity member, which took place last week.

Buggin
Here's the argument for abolishing Greek life. Not endorsing this position necessarily, but let's lay out the best possible version, not a caricature.
It's not about one horrific incident. It's about the fact that white Greek organizations were organized for the purpose of consolidating privilege among upper income white people. And they remain very good at doing that.
Are people going to continue to consolidate their privilege in other ways? Of course; don't be naïve. But why should public, taxpayer funded institutions be in the business of helping that happen?
Why should your tax dollars pay for a half-dozen Greek Life staff at UM or MSU, all tasked with helping a small, privileged segment of the student body indulge themselves without serious repercussions, all toward the end of keeping their almost-entirely-white networks intact later in life?
Why should universities make special land deals to lease valuable, high-demand property for giveaway rates for these groups' houses? Is that good stewardship of public money?
Throw in the fact that Greeks are many times more likely to impose costs on the university in the form of sexual assault proceedings, law enforcement intervention, medical intervention, and additional training, and it's impossible (so the argument goes) to justify dumping millions of dollars in taxes --paid by black and white, poor and middle class-- into a system that exists mainly to help the children of (relatively) rich white people party and stay (relatively) rich without too much work.
I have a feeling that most of the people commenting on here saying shut Greek life down have not even been a part of an organization. The amount of uneducated comments on this blog is disgusting. Find something else better to do with your time!
Just an FYI. Even with parental consent, children over 18 years old are protected under HIPPA, health information patient privacy act, and it is a federal felony of tens of thousands to publish this content with the parents consent, meaning it is unlawful for the parent to give this information, as well as you to publish it. I would take this down unless you have first covered, understood, and secured written consent from the boy, as he doesn’t have to sue for charges against you to still be filed. Have a great day though, just don’t want anyone to have legal troubles
This is so fucking fake
11:26 that link was from year 2012, what does that have to do with this current case.
Looks like the Higgins kid deleted his Twitter account. I wonder what was on there that required it to be deleted?
HIPPA applies to health care providers.
I’m a sigma chi here and this made me LOL! So glad we never got in too much trouble for making our pledges clean the basement covered in layers of piss, shit, and yack
protected under HIPPA, health information patient privacy act
It's not HIPPA, it's HIPAA, which stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
The only words you got right in that were "health" and "act".
I'd say that pretty much negates everything in your comment, counselor.
It’s HIPAA not HIPPA. Just wanted to correct the frat boy who was looking out for Kingfish’s legal interests.
Leave it to the Ole Miss IFC to play favorites and turn a blind eye to Pike. They’re afraid of their nationals and are a joke of a governing board for the university
I stand corrected. Sorry 'bout dat.
Terrible misleading headline
No one was forced to drink bleach
This is disgusting behavior by some young men, whether "exaggerated" or not. As a parent, I would be embarrassed for my son to cause harm like this to another. Prayers to the young man involved along with the many others mistreated in incidents that I am sure go unreported. The boys, fraternity and Ole Miss need to be held accountable for their actions.
To 12:22 p.m.: Is that you, Professor Thomas?
It's the line "consolidating privilege among upper income white people" that gave you away.
Fuck all you liberal pussies and Karen’s on this thread. Heard from multiple sources that this story has been EXAGGERATED extremely. Pussies.
But is it worse than OM sigma nu forcing a diabetic kid to eat straight sugar back in 2019?
Well, everyone, I do believe we’re hearing from the accused bleach-pouring p*ssy himself.
Grow up, son. You’re in a heap of trouble.
Gosh I pray for this family , how horrific! To not hear from the school in mind boggling!! This along with many other reasons at Ole Miss, my Freshman is TRANSFERRING out of here!
@4:37 lol so how the school handled this situation is why your freshman is transferring? I think it’s probably just that he/she can’t make friends...
This mother and family are personal friends of mine. This is no hoax. It’s all true. And the focus should be on Jimmy Higgins and his criminal assault, a fraternity chapter, national fraternity leadership and university that buried it. This was attempted murder - that was not stopped by many witnesses - frat brothers.
6:36 AM sounds like he was never a member of Greek life.
I hate what happened to this kid, but the Pikes . . . well they are Pikes.
Most Fraternities and Sororities are now more "woke" than Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, and Major League Baseball.
For the clown who claims this is a HIPAA violation, you're lost in the weeds of ignorance.
The world is full of ways for inattentive and foolish young men to accidentally maim and kill themselves.
The risk with young men and fraternities is that in many cases by joining you are knowingly and willingly signing up to spend many hours in an extremely intoxicated state with a bunch of heavy drinking entitled sadistic assclowns who love to demonstrate why mixing young stupidity with alcohol is always a bad idea.
The only thing that's relevant at this moment is whether or not this whole story is bull shit. All the parenthetical minutia posted above is irrelevant.
Have had 4 in greek life at UM. Not loving it, but they did. I happen to know the accused and met him freshman year. He is funny, kind, relatively naive, and would not hurt anyone - great parents, too. If any of this is true, my only speculation is he was caught up in the moment (along with his brothers, and probably not sober) and being COVID times, grabbed a nearby bottle that was protocol in every building to sanitize the pledges. So wrong, but I 100% do not believe there was malice involved. So hate it for the poor guy suffering, but also for the one whose future is crumbling. Same thing happens all over campus in student groups from sports teams to clubs.
How come no one has questioned the curious mention of M.D. Anderson Hospital in this sorry saga? They are the world's best cancer hospital, no doubt about it (pardon my brag from someone who trained there).
But they are pretty damn busy treating and researching cancer in all its nasty forms, so who would have the time to treat a garden variety, caustic-substance burn injury that is not cancer? I know they worked on HIV in the early 1980s but that was because Kaposi's sarcoma was a genuine cancer so it was part of their mission.
RUSH PIKE!!!!!
This. Never. Happened. If it did, produce proof......#HOAX.
12:22, You do know there are back fraternities and sororities, right? Some of them go back 100 or so years. The Omegas, for one, are known for literally branding their pledges. Would you abolish them as well? Or is it just the white Greeks who are rotten in your view, because they come from “white privilege”?
@9:11 you would be disgusted by yourself for calling it a hoax if you only knew what this boy is going through. Absolutely disgusted.
The story is either:
Literally true
Factually false
Exaggerated
Totally false
It cannot be exaggerated and fake at the same time.
9:11 Read The Report Posted where Higgins is charged with agg. Assault!
7:17 - Can you post a copy of the PoPo report?
University report is posted in this article James Bowes Higgins report above
Can someone post the Oxford or agency arrest record other than Ole MS report.
According to MSN, "this story was first reported by the Jackson Jambalaya website"
Props, Kingfish!
If that attorney is out of Houston then it's probably about to be on for the defendants like in that Sooner football beatdown. Money won't fix these injuries but they'll be getting some anyway.
https://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/2021/04/07/ole-miss-student-charged-frat-hazing-injured-pledge/7124360002/
Now reported on WLBT and MSLive so this is no hoax. Attorney for the victim is also named.
Hazing goes on wherever their are groups of boys and the men in charge do little to stop it. A Madison Central star quarterback beat a young player with a golf club. It was never reported but my son witnessed it. It was part of “initiation” to the football team. It is called toxic masculinity.
ABC's now coving it

All the frat rats who were chitposting here that this was a hoax... can eat some chit!
National exposure for Jackson Jambalaya! Look at all these news orgs repeating that the story was first reported here. Kingfish is getting plenty of MSM cred!
12:22 here. I don't necessarily endorse the position I articulated above. Just trying to give it a fair hearing.
But to answer your question, taking the necessary steps to mitigate the alleged harms of white fraternities would have negligible impact on black fraternities.
(The fact that nobody hesitates, in 2021, to call them "white fraternities" and "black fraternities" may give us a sense of just how backwards the whole system is, but I digress.)
Nearly all black fraternities at non-HBCU schools are off-campus anyway. They're smaller (so fewer Greek Life staff, if any) and they're statistically much less likely to result in police or medical intervention -- because black folks know cops will be a lot less friendly to them than a white lawyer's kid, and are less reckless.
So if we just stop recognizing all Greek organizations and let them exist off campus, black groups are barely affected. The cost of white groups comes way down, however, and the university stops using tax dollars to subsidize private clubs for rich kids.
The bystanders are just as guilty. My son will not be pledging next year when he goes to Ole Miss. The Oldrowrebs Instragram account should be enough to just say no to Greek like.
Let’s just say I do this for a living.
This report above was generated in a software known as gMed. There’s nothing specific in that report to indicate the LA Class D esophagitis was from ingestion. This finding can simply be seen all the time from severe esophagitis or vomiting. LA Class D esophagitis is seen in hospitalized patients every single day of the week.
Additionally, household bleach rarely if ever causes clinically significant esophageal injury. The pH of 5% bleach is usually around 11 and not likely to cause injury. People drink bleach all the time and it causes them little to no trouble. “Spraying” bleach would cause such little ingestion that this is not likely to be significant.
Significant esophageal injury is usually only from severely acidic or severely alkaline products (lye). Yes, those substances are likely to cause a lifetime of Barrett’s, esophageal strictures, etc. Bleach absolutely does not. Are we sure it was bleach?
The defense needs a good expert GI witness. This case could be shot down easily by reading any ASGE, ACG, or AGA guideline on common ingestions.
The posting from the family seem dramatic. I’ve seen bleach ingestions and none of them ever amount to what is purported above.
Wait until the grand jury meets in June
From UpToDate Medical Reference
“Standard liquid household detergents, phosphates, and bleaches have pHs ranging from 9 to 11, and rarely cause serious injuries unless taken in large amounts (200 to 300 mL).
Household bleaches are relatively common ingestions, but rarely cause esophageal burns. These are typically composed of about 5 percent sodium hypochlorite and have a pH of approximately 11, which is below the pH threshold of 11.5 to 12.5 that tends to cause esophageal injury. When burns do occur with these agents, they tend to be mild and do not require treatment.”
8:04 pm “I do this for a living “- Interesting... You mentioned that LA class D is seen in hospitalized patients every week. So just curious what percentage of those hospitalized patients are college age 20 years old? Just curious.... I’ve never known anyone hospitalized at such a young age for that reason.
12:22/2:38, You’re arguments, while appearing reasonable, seem to contain a lot of assumptions. If you have the time, I’d appreciate some citations. Thanks in advance.
In reply to my 8:04pm,
If truly bleach then you could think either:
1) Ingested more than 200-300mL
2) Used a commercial concentration. Dollar store variety is 3%. Brand name “concentrated” is usually around 6%. Commercial formulations some times higher
3) Was it some other alkaline or acidic substance?
9:54pm. Valid point. And clinical context clearly points to a temporal association to ingestion.
Not everything plays by the rules, but just saying bleach ingestion is fairly common. Rare to see it this bad. Pool cleaners, oven cleaners, etc are whole different ballgame.
"Bleach ingestion is fairly common"? Really? Who the hell ingests bleach? You see them every day of the week. Really? Why is that?
8:04 - It says the kid lost 50 lbs because he is unable to eat and this is exaggerated? And it happens all of the time? How many people are you seeing that have experienced this same issue? Poor kid.... if he was your kid you would have a different opinion. You must have been in a frat yourself and justify this behavior. It clearly says on ALL cleaning products not to be ingested. It only takes a 1st grader to read that. Poor kid...
4/7 11:04- University PD is a full fledged PD. This is there jurisdiction as the event occurred on campus. It is official record.
11:45 Thank you for stating this. So now everyone knows this is LEGAL and NOT a HOAX! I never doubted it. My thoughts are only for the victim and families involved.
