Ag Commish Andrew Gipson issued the following statement.
The
Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) is assisting
the Mississippi Crisis Foundation in distributing 2,592 food boxes to
the public at the Mississippi State
Fairgrounds in Jackson, on Wednesday, April 21, at 9:00 a.m. as part of
the USDA sponsored Farmers to Families Food Box Program.
“The
Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce is proud to partner
with the Mississippi Crisis Foundation on this endeavor,” said
Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson. “A lot
of our citizens are still struggling with health and loss of work as a
result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’re glad to be able to assist
Mississippi families in need on the State Fairgrounds.”
M.
Palazola Produce Co. of Memphis, Tenn., will provide the 2,592 food
boxes, containing meat, milk, cheese, yogurt, potatoes and apples. In
addition, Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. of Jackson is donating 6,480
dozen eggs. Those receiving a food box will also collect two and a half
dozen eggs.
The public can start arriving at 9:00 a.m. and must remain in their vehicles with the windows up.
MDAC volunteers will wear
masks and gloves at all times and when instructed, the public will be
allowed to open their car trunks for placement of their food box.
The
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created the Farmers to
Families Food Box Program under the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program
(CFAP). Through this, the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing
Service partners with national, regional and local suppliers, whose
workforce has been significantly impacted by the closure of restaurants,
hotels and other food service businesses, to purchase up to $3 billion
in fresh produce, dairy and meat products. Suppliers
then package these products into family-sized boxes and transport them
to food banks, community and faith-based organizations and other
non-profits serving Americans in need.
The
Mississippi State Fairgrounds is located at 1207 Mississippi Street,
Jackson, MS 39202. The public must enter through Gate 1 on Jefferson
Street and exit through Gate 6 on Greymont Street. Visit

Can’t wait to see all the fat people who will be lined up for the free food
Feed a man a fish...
Are they going to give out smart phones too?
This is a joke.
Line up and put your hand out for free sh*t.
i would show up for free ice cream but I don’t eat vegetables except rice and potatoes or meat with bones in it.
just like the old soviet union. wait in a line for a handout.
Preparing us for the bread lines.
Every free meal is a guaranteed democrat vote. The meals were never about feeding starving people.
If these items require cooking or any preparation they will likely go undelivered. Gots to get the little Debbie's and fruity drinks.
This has to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever witnessed. Who in the hell is suffering for food during this hoax? Restaurant workers probably suffered the most because of these asinine regulations. Like closing down the river and reservoir how damn stupid. The people that were drawing government assistance before covid have not been effected one bit financially. Nothing but vote buying and pandering.
ahhh yes , free food for the ''needy''. the same people that suffer an epidemic of morbid obesity.
give them access to unused plots of government land where gardens can be planted to produce food. provide them with seed , hand tools , Tomatoe stakes , beanpoles , manure wheelbarrow and water. we will see how many of them will show up for that .
i would show up for free ice cream...
I vote for the ice cream, too!
quick question for the do gooders...
basic economic question that is.
whats the demand for a free product/service?
hint: unlimited.
Require that they pick up trash for a few hours before being eligible for the free stuff. Results - no one shows up.
I really don’t understand how the Ag Commish claims to be a Republican. He whines about consumers not buying enough dairy (government control), supports the free food boxes (government handout), and required masks for the fair and rodeo and everything else (again, big government).
He’s clearly a liberal. I don’t care if he wears a cowboy hat. He’s a big governmental control politician.
Seen pictures where Texas does this on a larger scale, seems like one needs to go early, sleep in car and take a Pee Jug with less than 3K boxes.
Maybe they should be giving out hoes, fish hooks and shotgun shells (if you could find any)...
@10:24 AM
Thats a good way to deplete our wild game. There is reason we have bag limits.
I know this is a bit off topic. But shotgun shells are the easiest cartridges to reload. Fifty shotgun shells can be rotated and reloaded for 10 years. They also work just fine loaded with black powder if you aren’t shooting them in a semiautomatic shotgun. If youtube hasn’t purged videos related to reloading, search for “field loading shotgun shells”
I am glad you all know the financial situations of everyone. There are people that will be very appreciative of this service, because they may not have enough money for all they need. This will help them avoid some tough decisions. My guess is the working poor will benefit from this the most, as they make too much to qualify for SNAP, but don't have enough for all the necessities. And God only knows how much food goes to waste in this country already. I would rather someone benefit from this instead of the total waste that we usually see.
From what I've seen on the local TV news, the people who show up for free food haven't missed any meals in a long time.
People out of work? All I see online are restaurants and businesses begging for people to apply...
If they are out of work in this environment it is by choice or paid for by the stimmy... :face palm:
This isn't about the people receiving the food. This is about a handout to the farmers. Gives Andy a good name by handing out food while also allowing him to claim how good he is doing with the agriculture around the state.
Why don't we do this bi-weekly and cut off the food stamps. Food stamps should be used for Bread, Milk, hamburger meat, chicken, eggs, pasta, salt, sugar, coffee and tea. If you want to get sick go watch what gets purchased by the food stamps. Stood in line with my hotdogs, buns and bag of chips the other day behind a lady buying steaks and shrimp with her food stamps then buy a case of beer and 2 packs of cigs with cash. I got into my 2002 Silverado and she got into her late model Toyota Highlander.
Will they deliver to my house for free?
I hate to mingle
There are a lot of people on social security that don’t make enough to get by. There are those that will take advance of this also. A lot of elderly people will be grateful for this amd will definitely use the food.
@ 10:54 - This is 10:24.
I never said anything about changing the bag limits. And being a reloader, I am familiar with reloading.
@4:49
I never said you did. But bag limits won’t mean a damn thing if you send every hungry urbanite into the woods to forage and hunt game.
You never have been called bright or gifted before, have you?
1:21 you should be grateful that you don’t need help. You don’t know her circumstances or why she was purchasing those particular items...I will assure you she doesn’t do it often. I myself receive help and it has been a lifesaver. Try to judge a little less.
Jimmy B at 8:43 people who receive assistance have certainly been affected. Prices at the grocery and have soared and many people who receive assistance do work full time jobs. Why not be grateful for what you have instead of worrying about what you don’t have.
8:43 - Who closed down the river, and how? Never happened.
