Mississippi State and Tulsa got into a big ole brawl after the Armed Forces Bowl yesterday. The two teams got into a shoving match before the game after the Tulsa players surrounded the Bulldogs during warmups.
Notice the Tulsa assistant coach grinning during the whole episode. The two teams resumed the pugilism after the game. Good work to the camera crew who kept following the action when the announcers left.
WR Malik Heath bragged about kicking one player in the head. He removed the video from his Instagram account.
MSU Athletic Director John Cohen issued the following statement:
While I’m proud of the representation of our football student-athletes in our previous 10 SEC games and applaud the effort of our team during the Armed Forces Bowl, I’m deeply concerned about the actions of some student-athletes. No matter what led to the situation, fighting is inexcusable and does not represent Mississippi State University’s core values. Our administration and Coach Leach are working diligently with the SEC office to review yesterday’s events and will address the situation in an appropriate matter.”

While I'm tempted to call this thuggery, when I was 19 I would have done stuff like this too, and I'm white as they come
Thugs on both teams. . . acting like idiots.
Impose a fine on both schools.
Add an extra fine to a few Tulsa players.
( for running around like third grade lil' girls).
Add an extra fine to the six MSU fans ringing a cowbell.
( Because that's just embarrassing when representing the SEC in a Bowl game).
For all the caterwauling, this wasn't much of a fight. Lots of jawing and pushing, more like an MLB fight. I've seen much bigger hits in High School and JV football game fights.
It was a terrible way to end what had been an entertaining game. Having said that, anyone who watched the game can’t be surprised this happened. Tulsa was the second most penalized team in the country this year and it was clear why. The players are at fault, but the officials bear most of the blame for never really trying to get control, despite almost 20 penalties in the game. But all of this after-the-fact clutching of pearls (e.g. Kirk Herbstreit, who’s gotten really bitchy in recent years) is ridiculous.
Total lack of class. What an embarrassment to MSU, the entire state of MS and the SEC.
It began when the State thugs came out pregame in typical ghetto style with their shirts off. Cowardly convicts proved after the game that this is the most out of control program in the country responsible for the worst scene in college football history. They make those notorious Miami teams look like choirboys. State fans have one thing to be very thankful for —- that there were no knives, bricks or baseball bats near the sideline that those convicts could have gotten their hands on during that riot. Leach’s response is inexcusable. Hire a clown and you get a circus. Then the Heath coward thug who kicked a guy in the head and ran away posts a ghetto video postgame that is totally disgusting and going viral. The university is allowing these convicts to masquerade as “student athletes “.
Heads should roll and players put in the road. The AD has sat idly by and allowed this thug culture to become deeply imbedded in the program. The next coach will have a very hard time getting control of this situation. The university and the program is being totally embarrassed in the national media. If State does not self discipline and seriously address this behavior and lack of control, the SEC should drop the hammer.
Devoted, life long, loyal State fans are fed up and totally disgusted and humiliated.
I am one of them.
Compared to the pre-Egg Bowl brawl 20 years ago, yesterday looks like a bunch of sissies. Dang millennials.
" Dang millennials."
Bullshit.
Quit blaming an entire generation on a select few sissy soy boys.
Many of these young people have the same values as their "boomer grandparents" .
Um, the Miami teams were much worse. Watch the Miami-Texas or SC-Miami fights on Youtube.
Yesterday’s jailbreak was the most despicable display in college football ever ..... period.
Fine Leach a million of his annual five million salary. That'll get the cocky jerk's attention.
@5:40 State grad, season ticket holder, long time fan here. Tulsa players came out chirping during warmup, and they played dirty the whole game. I admire our players’ restraint during the game , and I love the fact that they finally had enough and kicked that ass. I know you are an Ole Miss asshat pretending to be a State fan, so your comments are meaningless. I’m proud of my university and my team, and the future is bright. Coach Leach handled the situation well. Hail State!
The kick was to the chest not head. Need to review the kick from the other angle. Still does not justify the fighting though.
Malik Heath fights like a b*tch-@ss sissy. He kicked a man on the ground and then ran like he was scared. Not even tough enough to be called a thug. And talks like an illiterate moron.
I doubt a single one of the above commenters has ever put on the uniform. Fine the team, fire the coach, can the AD, jerk some scholarships and cancel future bowl appearances. A bunch of dip-wads in penny loafers swilling Busch-Light grilling weenies while checking out the babes with false eye-lashes (and other things) at the tailgate.
You pussies have already made it so a player has to give deep thought for 2.3 seconds before he makes contact on the field. The game is not about tossing hats into the air and saluting the upper-classmen. It's life. Emotions run high. Get the hell over yourselves.
Didn’t they fire Morehead because he couldn’t control his players? Seems like they have the same problem. I guess when you hire a loose cannon you can expect the stupid comments Leach made after the game. The NCAA and SEC will set an example, look for significant fines and penalties. Leach could have lighten those for his self and the program but his lack of leadership ability prevailed.
5:42-Nailed it !!!
Malik Heath should be kicked off the team. What a disgusting player. To kick a man down then brag about it on social media. Vulgar
10:43. The Tulsa coach had his players come out pregame with clothes on. Not so for Leach, our prison warden.
Let me get this straight. You are proud of your team and you think Leach handled this well. Hell, you’re part of the problem!
I’m a State grad who has loyally supported them since you were changing your diaper (if you still aren’t). I am a season ticket holder unless civility is returned and pride is restored.
Oh yeah, one more thing. I’m a veteran who has been in a real fight with a real enemy and didn’t run. I stand for the national anthem. This was the Armed Forces Bowl and MSU were their invited guests. Not only did Leach and these punks embarrass the university, they humiliated their hosts representing our military.
You’re proud of your team and your coach???
What a lightweight you are.
MSU has always had a culture problem and it’s not just the athletics programs. My theory is little brother syndrome coupled with redneck ideology is a toxic combination.
State being too defensive about this.
Seems like some of the biggest agitators were goes that couldn't play for injury. #9 running out there and then got floored. Malik Heath #4 very disappointing especially when bragging afterwards.
Man just listened to Malik Heath. Very disappointing. State should forfeit their share of bowl money before SEC gets involved.
Some of the smart people on this board explain to me how a cowbell is not an artificial noise maker.
If 10:43, aka Proud State Fan, were invited to someone’s home for dinner, I guess they would trash the place and then be proud of themself.
Pathetic.
Malik Heath should've never been at State in the first place.
He was supposed to go to State after graduating from Callaway High School then "last minute" he had to go to Co-Lin for junior college first instead, because somebody at Callaway was changing his grades. His aunt was the Callaway principal at the time, but somehow an office assistant was blamed for it.
What courses does State put him in? At this rate I much rather go watch some FCS, D2, and D3 games if big FBS schools are going to pass people through that have zero business being there.
I'm not a State grad or parent otherwise I would have been emailing the University President when he was accepted in the first place. I really like Leach, but will look total respect for him if he doesn't kick Heath off the team.
He should be expelled from State and State needs to explain how the heck he was ever there. JPS sort of also has explaining to do on his grades being changed and it getting swept under the rug. Feel bad for the kids that had to go to school with this guy all these years. Remember his aunt was the one that swept under the rug her son attacking a student with brass knuckles. Wonder if she did stuff for her nephew too?
I’ll start by saying that I discarded my MSU tag on the front of my truck. I’ll end by saying that I will not support them in any shape, form, fashion or manner. They are a total embarrassment
@9:57 First, Heath should go. Second, before you malign another's culture, wasn't MS the school recently on probation because they had coaches buying themselves and recruits hookers and paying recruits and players? Then there was the guy hiking his leg in the end zone at a recent egg bowl. And then was sheltered and consoled by the soon to be fired coach's wife after the game. And wasn't there a fight after that game, too? The ironic thing is despite the cheating and whoring, MS was still a mediocre team.
I have a degree from both schools. That said, I am confident there are as many rednecks at MS as MSU. I strongly suspect you are one.
Sorry our team offended so many Ole Miss fans. I guess we should abide by “let he who hikes a leg in the end zone first cast the first stone”.
Anyone catch Matt Corrall kicking that guy while he was down today? Gasp...such a trashy program @kirkhierbstreit
Get rid of Leach & crew and put the money saved into the dairy school.
They do make some damn good cheese up there.
Perhaps a fence with razor wire and bars on the athletic dorm windows might cool them down
Interesting statistic:
Leach’s Washington State teams led the nation for most arrests over a five-year span.
Did Cohen do his homework or just ignore this when he hired this clown?
Reap what you sow with both Cohen and Leach.
Leach never carried a throw-away pocket phone. No player for Leach ever sailed off a balcony. Nobody Leach taught ever fake-pissed in the end-zone. Leach never got fired. No team member of Leach ever stole television sets from motels. No Leach veteran ever showed up at a high-school game and ran onto the field to fight with youngsters? No Leach recruit ever toked a bong and said he was paid real money. No Athletic Director over Leach ever high-tailed it out of town when the heat was turned up and the spotlight was on him.
Shall I continue?
2;41. Nice try.
You can write a novel if you like. The video of the MSU convicts’ actions and Leach’s postgame comments speak for themself. Worst display in college football history. Every sports commentator in the country agrees.
Actually, Leach is the perfect hire for Hail State. Considering the arrest record under Leach at Washington State, he has a lot of experience coaching convicts.
Good try 3:49, but 2:41 pointed to a SERIES of events. This is one incident. I’m not saying that MSU was a fine example, it was definitely embarrassing. They will take their punishment and learn from it. But, Ole Miss can hop right off that high horse. They have no room to talk. Many more issues in Oxford than Starkville over the years.
Why does a disgusted and embarrassed life long State graduate and supporter get labeled as an Ole Miss person for making an obvious and honest comment? Because they are totally fed up with the obvious lack of concern or control in our program and express themself?
What does Ole Miss have to do with that despicable display on a national stage? What does Ole Miss have to do with Leach’s pathetic response?
No wonder we are always reminded about our inferior “little brother” complex!! Every time someone points a finger at us, we bring up Ole Miss. To hell with Ole Miss. They have absolutely nothing to do with this humiliating episode or whether appropriate action will be taken and changes made. This is our problem. Quit worrying about Ole Miss !!
The stage was set when the Tulsa team surrounded the MSU team in pre-game warmups, taunting, jiving, ridiculing. And went downhill from there, continuing (with ref permission) for four quarters. It finally erupted and was bound to happen. The testosterone and anxiety levels of a group of 19 year old men is going to erupt when you push them against the wall for three hours.
You sissies remind men of Obama's rules of engagement.
The stage was set when Leach allowed his players to go out pregame with no shirts on in true “gangsta” fashion.
It deteriorated from there. Can you imagine a class program’s coach to allow that?
Blaming Tulsa, Ole Miss, Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy does not offset the thug culture that is deeply imbedded in the Mississippi State football program. If ignored, this will happen again and then, as usual, you can sissy whine and blame someone else.
