UMMC and the Mississippi State Department of Health issued the following statements.
University of Mississippi Medical Center
Many
of the technical difficulties experienced when trying to schedule a
vaccination appointment through the online scheduling tool at covidvaccine.UMC.edu
have been corrected. Work continues to improve functionality. The site
and server were not prepared for the surge of page visits brought on by
the announcement yesterday of vaccine availability for all
Mississippians 65 and older and those in younger age ranges with
underlying conditions. Since we learned about the change in guidance
when it was announced yesterday, we have been working diligently with
our colleagues at the Mississippi State Department of Health to
accommodate the changes as well as the changes needed to comply with
federal data reporting requirements. We apologize for any inconvenience
experienced while the scheduling tool was being updated to accommodate
the greater number of people now eligible to make an appointment.
Current long wait times when visiting the site are associated with the
high volume of people trying to make an appointment. Vaccination sites
and number of appointments available daily at each are determined by
MSDH and we are working with them to update that information in the
appointment tool.
Mississippi State Department of Health
The Mississippi State Department of Health had a vaccine distribution plan in place that has been significantly altered in the last few days – especially in the last 24 hours. Neither the county health department drive-through sites, nor the UMMC vaccine scheduling website was designed to accommodate the monumental surge we are currently experiencing. At this time, we have no additional vaccine, and every appointment is tied to an actual vaccination.
The Mississippi State Department of Health hopes to receive a large shipment of vaccine in mid-February that should help put additional shots in people’s arms. We understand the frustration brought on by this sudden change of plans. We will certainly keep all Mississippians updated regarding additional vaccine.
Mississippians should understand that we can only vaccinate residents based on vaccine availability. We will open additional vaccination appointments as we receive more vaccine. Again, the timetable was incredibly altered to make vaccinating everyone eligible impossible.
In the meantime, all Mississippians – whether vaccinated or not – should continue to follow protective guidelines. Especially avoid any social gatherings. And always wear a mask.
Kingfish note: Posted below is what a reader faced yesterday when he tried to schedule an appointment.

News just posted no need to try to schedule appointments until mid-Fed. Way to go Reeves/Dobbs keep reporting on increasing virus count/deaths hope that you got yours. Abandoning everyone else.
But Tater, the damn No Masker, who's allegedly had it, got his. What a pathetic leader. In the military, it's Dig Your Own Hole, Carry Your Own Roll, Officers Eat Last.
Here, it's Me First. Vaccine for Me, and Not for Thee.
Primary him, Chris. I have come around. No one else will stand up for the average Mississippian.
Why don’t they ever name the incompetent state employees responsible for these embarrassing failures? Why is there never any accountability?
Give it a rest people. The MSDH, who's director speaks daily with the governor, did not anticipate this surge in requests for vaccinations. I mean, how could they have known that people were wanting to get vaccinated after being locked up and locked out for a year? Y'all act like you have espn or something.
Getting a vaccine in and of itself this fast is unprecedented. Period. I posted an interview with the CEO of Merck a few months ago. WHAT DID HE SAY?
The second issue is this issue around manufacturing at scale. There's seven and a half billion people on the planet right now. And we've never had a vaccine that's been used in that larger population. So even if you have a vaccine, scaling it up to manufacture at those kinds of numbers, and then being able to figure out how to distribute it particularly in the areas of the world where people can't afford the vaccine, where the last mile challenge is greatest. That's going to be a huge issue for us.
Only a simpleton would expect no logistical problems in the first 60-90 days of the rollout. Now, if we are still having problems in May, that is a different story but come on. They have to produce and then distribute. If it takes until May or June, that is STILL record time.
Part of the problem was the CDC and their damned guidelines. They botched it just as they did the testing early last year. The Governors rely on their guidelines because it is "science." Then the Governors realize those guidelines create more problems and they are adjusting. Unless you are an idiot like Cuomo.
Most deadly pandemic in 100 years. No one could have possibly foreseen that a lot of people would want to be vaccinated against it. Even if that were true, it still doesn't explain why the rollout was a cluster from the get-go. (Unless those unadministered doses walked out the back door - Let's see an audit of the vaccine supply).
You posted a comment from someone who did not succeed in his quest, but you failed to post mine that gave a different story. So, I'll do it again.
I logged on to the website and spent a few hours trying to get through the various cra - shes, but ended up with multiple choices of sites and times. I chose the Trustmark Park location and successfully scheduled a time for next Monday.
Sorry his failed - but he didn't follow through. Should have remembered the old adage about "if at first you don't succeed" - I did and when I ran into the same roadblock he did, I backed up and did it again. Sorry for his 2 1/2 hours, but when tens of thousands are trying to do the same thing at the same time, you have to expect and be willing to work with the complications.
Now, reading the latest statement from Dobbs we should also not be surprised. There is only so much of the vaccine to go around. Once its all subscribed, have to wait on the next delivery. Fearing that potential shortage was why I was willing to "try, try again" after hitting the roadblock. Sorry for the guy that you repeated who gave up, but I'm looking forward to driving through come Monday.
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?
Tate did a terrible job managing expectations. Yesterday he was very pleased to move up the vaccines for the next group, spoke of how well things were going and how they would fix the appointment issues. Just forgot the was a very limited supply of vaccine.
I don’t understand why on earth Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilitates who have been in lockdown unable to see family for almost a year have not yet been vaccinated. They were slated to receive them directly after frontline health care workers. Because of someone’s terrible screw up, anybody and everyone is now eligible over age 65. Pitiful leadership by State officials responsible for this. Guess Governor is spending all his time keeping up with our worthless President.
Come on y'all. If you have been paying any kind of attention, you should have known there would be distribution hangups. Also just counting how much we had (25000 I believe) vs how many people with high risk conditions here (2nd fattest state) of course this was going to happen. The shipment in Mid February will be much larger.
How did we go from over 75 to teenage smokers being vaccinated in only one day? Only a fool would think that makes sense. My wife is 72 and in remission but can’t be vaccinated because a fat smoker beats us to the punch. Are we missing something?
6:10 - the first round of doses was reserved for those very people you speak of, along with the folks that have to treat them and others. There are doses reserved for them in the existing stash - they are being distributed and administered by CVS and Walgreens, under a federal contract. They are separate from the vaccines allocated to the state. And the administering of the shots are not under state control or management.
The changing of the target to allow over 65 did nothing about your mama, or whoever it is that you are worried about. What it did do was move the over 65 ahead of the first responders and some other groups like that
Your potshot at "state leadership" is totally off the mark. The state is not the ones dealing with your Nursing Homes etal. And the change yesterday did nothing with it either.
Calm down, buttercup. And learn what you are talking about before you put your fingers on the keyboard next time.

Did you get anything confirming your appt? I got through establishing a Microsoft account. Then I got an email from them saying UMMC had access my account. Nothing after this. I know they have my name, birthday, and email address. My appt is tomorrow afternoon. I don't know if I need to go or not. I have been told you need to take a confirmation with you. Help.....Anyone.
@6:01. Tate's managing expectations is not in question here. Those in the 65 plus category were slated to start receiving the vaccine in mid-February. What he did yesterday was move that line up, because the supply and demand on the existing supply allowed for it.
Some several thousands now have an appointment for the coming days/weeks. And that used up the stash that was available. Now the folks over 65 that didn't get an appointment will have to wait --------------- how long? Until what they were told two weeks ago, mid-February.
So, net result. Some folks got it earlier than they had expected. The rest of them will get it when the state receives its next delivery.
What would you rather Tate have done so that he wouldn't have mismanaged expectations. Left it like it was so that none of those over 65 were in line to get their shot, that there would be excess supply on hand now, and kept to the original plan? Then there would not have been any expectations raised, and there also would be none of the over 65 in line to get their desired vaccine. That would have been a great way to keep from mismanaging expectations. Glad you are not in charge.
Early this morning, my wife and I went on the site and got appointments for next week. However, her appointment is in one county and mine is in an adjacent county. We are 70 years old and don't care where we have to go because we have the appointments.
It would definitely upset me if we were told to wait until mid-February and then found out some jerk who smoked, had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and was morbidly obese from enjoying one too many meals at the Golden Corral buffet got the vaccine before us.
I was finally able to schedule an appointment for Monday of next week. That puts the date for my second shot on February 15th. Will those of us requiring our second shot get priority for the next batch?
"Why don’t they ever name the incompetent state employees responsible for these embarrassing failures? Why is there never any accountability ? "
_______________
These State Employees are busting their asses to try to serve as many people as they can.
Believe it or not, they also have to sleep, eat, shit, ect. (just like the people that they are trying to help).
On Average , only about one hundred State Employees are dealing with thousands of callers every hour.
God Bless the Health Department workers, the Unemployment workers and the other State Employees that are doing their best in this unprecedented situation !
Last I heard, the State is hiring people every day to help out.
Some may get "money" faster by trying to secure a job . . . rather than bitching about a delay with a free government check.
COVID-19 has been a disaster. The vaccination process as it has played out thus far is likewise a disaster. It would not have taken a rocket scientist to predict the registration site would be overrun when it was announced that people over age 65 could begin receiving the vaccine. The computer gurus who set up the registration website did not have the common sense to anticipate the numbers, which is a mirror image of the computer issues with people trying to log on for unemployment early in the pandemic.
With the vaccine shortage and no additional supply anticipated until mid February, the state department of Health and UMMC need to get more website options open and functioning now so they can be ready for the next wave of registration.
Young smokers before 65+? That must be part of the CDC "science." Remember, the left refers to COVID-19 as the "boomer remover."
Interesting that Tater got himself qualified for the vaccine. I am 74 and my wife is 69. We have tried for a week or more to call the numbers given or find out how to register. Today, Supertalk gave these two numbers:
601-965-4071 and 877-978-6453
Neither of those numbers is legit. If they ARE legit, they either don't answer or you get a beep beep beep for hours.
I'm really glad this is not serious shit!
6:25 pm
Yes you missed your chance to vote for better leadership.
Think about it.
Glad your wife is in remission.
In response to January 13, 2021 at 5:52 PM
I'm the reader who emailed the post to KF.
I didn't give up. I would have persisted like you, but,
learned the Health Department ran out of supply & to check back in mid February.
I will comply.
I'm glad you got your & are safe from COVID.
Pray for the millions who still need it.
How many more people are going to get Covid due to the fact that they were not able to get the vaccine? Totally unorganized system!!
About 20% will not show up for the appointment.
Who will get those shots?
You can receive a vaccine by showing up without an appointment. You would receive the dose destined for a no-show.
I know someone who just did this.
Seriously.
6:56 The MSDH website says "You may still schedule your second dose if you have already received your first." Thinking that means they will prioritize those that have already received the first shot which would be consistent with FDA recommendations.
Update for 6:56
I got my first shot today and just scheduled my second. Once you tell the system it is your second shot and the date of the first one it will bring up available sites. I couldn't get one at my original location, but I did get one in Pearl for February 11.
And, pray tell, please explain why teachers are so far down the pecking order, weeks after all smokers?
How on earth will people get the second shot in the required time frame if they can’t even get the first shot!
Next week the HHS ads start appearing urging everyone to hurry and get the vaccine.
$300 million appropriated for the ads. Total waste of money.
We don't need no stinking ads!
Tats screwed up by adding the additional groups, especially when he’d didn’t consult with UMMC or MSdH before making the announcement now we have healthcare workers and folks over 75 that may not get the second shot, because he put a run on they system.
Also, exactly how did he get his shot? He doesn’t fall into any of the approved groups!
"No one could have possibly foreseen that a lot of people would want to be vaccinated against it."
Oh, really? Say it with me...Bullshit!
Wonder what Tater's 'underlying medical condition' is that moved him ahead of all of us who are older than 65. How many of us will be infected while we sit around waiting for this cluster-fuck to be addressed?
Tater was a fool to change the rules yesterday. He just alienated a hundred thousand voters over age 65. Glad I got my 13th check last month. It will pay for my funeral if I catch this shit hoping to get through the two phones at the call center.
At 7:09. Amen Brother, Amen!
And God bless those National Guard kids standing out in the snow Monday for this old guy to get his first shot and lots of other old farts.
When my wife told me this morning the state had run out of vaccine I said that was great news b/c it means folks are taking the threat seriously.
What does it take for the embarrassingly spoiled "me firsters" to think in terms of community? To take all that Sunday morning bullshit as, no pun intended, Gospel.
Don't you understand that if we vaccinate the 200 thugs down at LCDC first, where contagion is impossible to avoid if there's a breakout, we keep those ventilators and ICU beds available for the general population. More people, us good'uns, non-smokers, non-dopers, non-AIDSers, are going to survive.
This is a watershed moment in our country. Epidemic-wise and politically. Man up, act like adults, quit whining. It's not always about you. Sometimes the real dumbasses get a turn. Tate and Sleepy Joe, for example. I'm gonna act like a big boy. It's not gonna be easy. But I am going to try.
Had the Gov kept with the schedule and not opened it up to such a wide group vaccinations could continue in an orderly fashion.
Tate streamed his vaccination on Facebook a couple hours before MSDH announced no more appointments until mid-February. He doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.
9:50 - Teachers are considered, by many, to be mere state employees. Most who visit this page believe teachers, poorly paid as they may be, get better benefits, upon retirement, than most....so, they deserve no 'front line' status just because they are in close proximity with hundreds of young people on a daily basis.
And, the smokers of today are the tokers of tomorrow and they carry a lot of weight with our decision makers.
6:65 here, thanks for the updates!
To the defenders of this cluster—the decision makers made a huge mistake by just opening up the 65+ in one day.Why didn’t they ease into the situation by moving to 70 and above one week and 65+ the next week.Anyone with common sense should know that big gap should cause a problem with scheduling. The problem seems to be in letting government workers make big time sensitive decisions. Chic -Fnd-Lay would already vaccinated every person who wanted a shot and given them a chicken sandwich to go.
There is a life and death contest now being played by the governors. They knew (last August) that their execution (they are executives) and priorities would/will matter. As with any executive, they wold need to be nimble and alter strategies.
The contest is to see which governor saves the most lives. And that depends on which governor gets the vaccine the fastest into the arms of the most at risk. The most at risk (and the science supports this) is people 90+ followed by people 80+ followed by people 70+ and so on.
Nevada's governor it appears will come in last. Although they are about #40 today in total distribution, their priorities (originally) were not based on age but on political favoritism, as if handing out tax credits. Old people will be dying there for months for lack of a vaccine.
Florida is looking great. Good distribution numbers and starting with the elderly.
So far, Mississippi has about the 40th best governor. Out of 50. Do you accept that?
More to come.
What are all you crybabies bitching about?
Y’all said it’s the damn flu!
Death rate of near zero.
Cases going away.
Herd immunity sissies!
Now all of a sudden you act like there is some sort of virus going around that can actually hurt you!
Everyone who voted for trump should be at the ass end of the vaccine line.
You helped put this in motion.
So suck it if you can still breath.
The bitching on this board is greater than that seen on the reality shows, Housewives of wherever, combined.
Will the Covid vaccinated wear the Scarlet Letter "V" on their foreheads? How else now will the mask requirement be enforced?
I just want the vaccine. I think I got through and made an appointment just as the website was getting overloaded, but I am really not sure. Never got a confirmation. Nothing. I know UMMC Covid Scheduling has my name, email, and birthday so am going to Trustmark Psrk this afternoon hoping I can get one.
Huge, huge mistake to open the 18-64 age group without getting the 65 and up taken care of first.
10:29 If you actually completed the process you would have been taken to a screen with your information, scheduled date of vaccination, and a scannable computer code for you to print out. You would also receive this same information sent to the email address you provided.
If you didn't get this then you don't have an appointment. You can show up, but they aren't going to give you the shot if you aren't in the system.
@10:29 AM
If you didn't receive an e-mail from "COVIDVaccine@umc.edu" with your appointment information and a QR code on it then you are not signed up.
11:18 and 11:25am.
Thanks for the info. I would have wasted a trip. Appreciate y'all replying. Too bad this info is not in the website.
Oh my god! I have to wait a month now (or likely more) for the shot that will give me autoimmune problems, joint pain, cancer, blood cell formation problems and kidney failure? This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!
@4:08 PM
Please tell all of us who has told you that you MUST get the "shot" that will cause you so many problems.
Guess Tate was right on Wednesday after all....
