Insurrection in the world’s greatest democracy. What a way to start the New Year!
So have we learned any lessons? I fear not.
But our politicians should take heed of what has occurred. When you cater to the worst in us to advance your ambitions, you will ultimately reap our worst behaviors.
We saw this on the left with the riots in Portland. We saw this on the right with the attempted coup in Washington. Nothing suggests this year will be better.
President Abraham Lincoln warned us that “America will never be destroyed from the outside.” Instead, he said, “it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
That has become the politics of today – destroy the opposition, which means destroy each other. Cable news, blogs, social media posts, and tweets are the carriers of this self-destruction.
One really sad feature that this politics of hate and division has given us is the scorn and contempt so many show for truth tellers, often resulting in threats of violence against them and their families. Others have revealed they dodge the truth to avoid such threats.
All the more reason to admire Hinds County Republican Chairman Pete Perry, who issued a truth telling statement on WLBT. Here are key excerpts:
“Vice President Mike Pence, performing his constitutional duty as President of the Senate, announced the outcome of the November 2020 election declaring Joe Biden as the next President of our country after receiving the votes of 306 electoral college members while Donald Trump received 233. This brings to a close the 2020 election.
“While Trump exercised his right to question the validity of the results by filing more than 60 court cases in multiple judicial jurisdictions, none of those judicial filings provided any factual evidence that there were any errors made that would have resulted in a different outcome. Despite the fact that the judicial findings did not change the results, our nation incurred one of its darkest days - certainly the darkest day of (almost) everyone living today.
“In our republican democracy, we should expect a peaceful transition of power following any and every election. Instead, our citizens and people around the world saw the storming of our nation’s Capitol, attacks on law enforcement officers sworn to protect it and its occupants, and the disruption and suspension of our Congress while its members were performing their sworn duty.
“Violence is always wrong. Political violence even more so. There is no excuse, no justification, for the insurrection that we endured.”
“The proper constitutional avenues to follow in questioning the electoral process had all been exhausted. Operating outside those avenues expose individuals and groups for their true self.”
“Personally, I denounce anyone who participated in the illegal mob riot and insurrection. And further, I denounce anyone who supports it.”
“I will continue to fight for the conservative movement, to fight for better government and better leaders. I hope I will do so joined by all who care about the ideas and principles that can keep our nation and its institutions alive and viable. And I will disagree and denounce anyone that supports the type (of) insurrection we witnessed Wednesday with the attack on those institutions and principles.”
Truth from a true conservative.

In the shadows of an over-bearing, powerful central government, managed by people who openly mock people of faith, those not educated in the Ivy league, those who oppose socialism, can America see the storming of the Capitol perhaps as foretelling a Bastille?

Normally I shake my head at Crawford's columns if I can make it through them, but not this one.
I agree that the actions of the mob invading the capitol and disrupting government business was detestable and criminal. But, I have serious disagreement with those who throw around terms like "failed coup" to describe the events in terms that would elevate it beyond the actions of other mobs who have demonstrated wanton violence in public places. There is absolutely no indication that these people planned or had the ability to overthrow our government. Our government business has been disrupted or interrupted many times but there were no "coups". More than anything, it was a failure of security. That failure in the face of numerous demonstrators should be questioned more than anything else. It's not the first or last time thousands of protesters have surrounded the capitol. Obviously the lax, perhaps even cooperative security will invite trouble. If it continues we will have many "coups" in the future. But I doubt it.
I agree. But, let’s be honest. The left opened the door to this when they condoned the riots and looting by saying that it was justified. That statement leads one to believe that when one is angry enough, violence is justified. It is not. I have found it very insulting when leftish politicians have acted so self righteous as if they have never condoned violence and have never had lives lost because of violence they condoned. The double standard that exists will further divide our country.
There is a vast difference between riots in the streets and a riot in the US Capitol. Neither can be condoned; however it seems to me that violence in the streets to protest injustice is a far cry from violence to interrupt the democratic process, hang the Vice President and kill the Speaker of the House. One damages buildings and property and the other damages Democracy and is a traitorous act.
Get ready for another MSM/Democrat coordinated false flag to usher in new legislations curtailing our liberty.
Right now, ATF/FBI and other agent provocateurs are donning Hawaiian shirts and AR-15 rifles while standing outside state capitols.
Meanwhile the cable news teleprompt readers and twitter blue checks drone on about "boogaloo boys" being "right wing extremists" to set the narrative for the upcoming media event.
Boogaloo Boys are nothing more than ATF agents trolling gun forums to get people to admit to manufacturing illegal automatic weapons. It was never an organic movement.

I agree with some Crawford's comments but believe he has missed the point of what the 74 million voted for in the election. Trump represented what they support. Pro life, strong borders, jobs, and most importantly Americans First. Trump opposed the one worlders, globalists and those who allowed our American jobs to go overseas. His American First doctrine exposed the past and provided Americans with a clear view of how we got to this point. Bad trade deals that Trump re-negotiated that benefited our country.
Their protest was not an insurrection but a mixture of pride and support for the above ideas and the man who fought for them. As we now know there appears to have been some Antifa and non-left agitators that tried to hijack the protest in another direction. As you may remember this was the same theme during the BLM riots.
We all have to learn from what has happended in 2020. Biden needs to understand that the 74 million will not go away. Conservatives will not stand for the shut-down of free speech nor will we allow our election processes to be hijacked or influenced by Facebook, Twitter or Google etc. This also goes for George Soros and his grassroots campaign to re-shape our country at the city and county level by funding local campaigns tor move our country left.
We of the 74 million now know how you work and your plan. We went to sleep and trusted. We were fooled and it was our mistake. It will not be repeated. We will see you in 2022.
Look for more posts and in more detail and facts on a wide range of topics that needs to be expressed.
Good job Mr Crawford. Lets do our homework
" The left opened the door to this when they condoned the riots and looting by saying that it was justified."
Yep.
That's it in a nutshell.
2:21 There is also supposed to be a vast difference in the security measures taken in the streets rather than the U.S. Capitol. If anti-police protesters thought for one minute they could simply push their way into the Capitol they would do so and burn the building down. But they know it would not be tolerated. The question remains: Why was this so easy? Whose agenda?
One other thing: Violence in the streets is not protest. It gets no protection. It is criminal, plain and simple.
11:54 the attack was absolutely planned. Go look up "Oathkeeper."
These people are ex-military or current police.
This is scary.
So, the looting, pillaging, torching, of government buildings and killing policemen in cities throughout the country is now considered to be simply 'protests in the streets'. I call bullshit.
Well said, Pete. While we may disagree on many things about politics and policy, I applaud and totally agree with this much needed statement. Anyone who disagrees needs to move to Russia or North Korea. Then you will have the dictator you desire. Warning, you won't have your guns or your rights. Would serve you right.
Our political leaders are responsible for this. They sat and watched and said nothing all summer while various cities were torched, looted, etc. Even a downtown area was taken over for many weeks- CHOP/CHAZ. Everyone stood down- protesters , not rioters, etc. Right?
Many irregularities occurred election night. Repubs and Dems CHOSE to remain silent about it. Media and big Tech clearly had been left leaning and complicit for years , accelerating throughout this election cycle and continuing in full force today (censorship anyone- bc we know that sure builds trust !) . Repubs could have called for an open transparent investigation into potential voter fraud - but they chose not to. They chose to just ignore this issue and not spend ANY political capital on it. So...an info vacuum arose and conspiracies abounded. We got The Kraken , etc. And that with a close senate runoff. Political leaders had over 2 months to hold open thorough investigations (hey, they have investigated much less before!- Russia Hoax, anyone?-4 yrs and an impeachment over nothing). I believe most conservatives would have been satisfied by a full open investigation into fraud - regardless of its outcome. Instead the politicians at best said " trust us. No fraud occurred."
So what did they expect to happen? Conservatives to believe them? So politicians and esp GOP lost a lot of credibility here. Generational amount. They feel conservatives will ALWAYS pinch our noses and just vote for another RINO simply bc he/she is the lesser of 2 evils on any ballot. They have miscalculated. Never again will many conservatives vote for a Rep. solely bc they are running against a Dem.
Repubs had the chance to clear the air. They didnt. Bc they dislike Trump. They are glad to see him go as are the Dems...so everyone in DC can get back to "business as usual".
Well the American people now clearly see that this is DC/feds/political est. v. mainstreet Americans.
Our leadership failed us. They deserve to be fired.
Funny how the political establishment remained eerily quiet about potential voter fraud...until demonstrators broke into their "sacred grounds".
They don't care about you, the country, chaz, BLM, or white supremacists.
They only care about reelected.
Oh and yes their personal safety and egos.
And demonstrators breaking into the capitol scared them.
And that fear they had is not necessarily a bad thing.
Maybe it will waken them up.
Remember they all only cared about voter fraud issue once their sacred chambers were breached.
Trump promised to " drain the swamp! But
it is hard to drain the swamp when the alligators are biting at your ass. Now the DC swamp is infested even more with the alligators from both sides of the asile.
Yes, its hard to drain the swamp if you keep adding new members to it.
