Since we can take a great photo of a galaxy lightyears away, why can't we take a crystal-clear photo of a criminal, a car tag, or other evidence of a crime within a few feet from the camera?
@3:38 PM - Because these many businesses cheap-out and install worthless low definition security cameras. They wrongly believe that these cheap cameras will prevent crimes.
A white carjacker in Jacktown? Who knew? Probably a poacher from Rankin Co.

Maybe because those cameras taking pictures of galaxies are the size of RVs. Not suitable for the corner of a gas station ceiling. Got any other silly questions you need help with?
You're right 3:28.
One would would think Kroger and others would have upgraded to better surveillance long ago.
That looks like a 2010 flip phone camera.
If you're gonna do something like that why would you not take advantage of a mask mandate to cover your face. That's a good use for a mask.
Because corporate security is cheap ass and only spends enough to avoid getting sued?
This is only news because it was a W\M (white male).We have and continue to have record “Murders” in the Capitol city. What is the race breakdown of these murders which have elevated Jackson to one of the top murder cities (if not first) in the USA.
My thought every time a surveillance video or photo is posted. It’s as if they want it to be a challenge.
I thought security was beefed up at the Kroger after the child was kidnapped from that same lot. At least no one was injured or killed this time.
Nobody is surprised. Same place that little boy was kidnapped and killed from. Where are the BLM protesters on this? Cups in Fondren has a BLM sign up in their store. Maybe they can help out the victim.
Bullshit. The cell phone was left in the car. They told the JPD where the car went with the tracking app. JPD told them that they would not pursue the car! Now the sheriff wants information. What a crock.
Maddening. The cellphone was left in the car. They called JPD and told them where the car was going by the tracking app on the phone. JPD said that they would not pursue the car. Now the sheriff says he wants any information. What a crock. We. Are lost
good cameras cost money.
I hadn’t heard from Vance in so long that I’d forgotten he recently won an election.
because tax payers dollars aren’t used
SO is focused on getting out of that consent decree. SO resources are going to that jail right now and working the county, allowing the cities to handle their own crime for the most part.
On a good day, in municipalities across the land the police departments handle issues within their jurisdiction. Sometimes local, state, and federal agencies team up to address specific issues that may overwhelm a small agency.
Various laws and taxes regulate and fund a city police department. City administration supports and funds law enforcement efforts.
It seems to work fine everywhere else.
Money? Good Lord...Kroger has more money than the Pope! The answer was stated correctly, above. These little cheap ass cameras meet insurance requirements.
For over a century, Mississippi businesses owed a duty to keep their premises reasonably safe for customers. This typically required lighting, security cameras and security personnel more so if you were in more dangerous areas.
Two years ago the legislature passed a bill that says businesses cannot be held liable for damages caused by the intentional acts of a third party. This law will (or has) totally changed the game in Jackson in high traffic retail areas. Now, there is no incentive from a civil exposure standpoint to upgrade security or security cameras aside. In fact, a number of businesses have removed these things altogether.
Retailers and businesses likely didn’t know it then, but this law acted as just another step towards people not doing in-person shopping. I hope their CGL premiums went down (lol) and those savings make up the difference.
9:16 I have more money than the Pope. He has to take an oath of poverty. I don’t have him beat by much though.
Meanwhile, the Leader of the Madison Gulag has decreed that every business must mount a camera somewhere on the east portico above the gargoyle.
The Board of Aldermen, now fully staffed, is in ongoing discussions regarding a requirement for dashboard mounted cameras on every vehicle entering the city. The sticking point seems to be whether or not the mayor will have a key to every vehicle.
@9:18AM BINGO!!
I'd like to add that a cell phone had been left in the car when the car was stolen. The victims notified JPD of the cars exact parked location after the theft...bc life 360 was on the phone.
JPD said "we dont pursue" and didnt even bother to drive over to the location the car ended up at after this car jacking.
That is the real tragedy here folks.
I didn’t realize people still shopped at that Kroger

The final time I went to that one, the music playing over the self-checkout area was so loud, I couldn't hear myself think. NEVER AGAIN...
"The final time I went to that one, the music playing over the self-checkout area was so loud, I couldn't hear myself think. NEVER AGAIN..."
I hear ya !
My last experience at that location:
( 15 customers at the check out line, and the cashier is commenting on everything people have bought)
And yes, while I like friendly cashiers . . . tell me what I owe and then shut up.
9:18 is on point. People don’t pay attention but every year our good republican leaders sponsor bills that are written by lobbyists and corporations. The laws help companies at the expense of people. The legislation has taken away the right of companies to stand in front of a jury who decides whether they should be responsible for their inaction. And i promise you, no ones insurance rates has gone down substantially because of that law.
Everyone says JPD wouldn’t track the cellphone. That maybe true, that may not be true. Until we know it’s true, we shouldnt treat comments like they are the gospel truth.
@9:18 and Bill Dees
The previous laws allowed property owners and business operators to be sued for damages even when reasonable protections were being provided to patrons. Gunfire in a parking lot on a busy corner in broad daylight? Sue the c-store owner and win big for the victim’s family even tho the shooter and victim had an ongoing feud over a woman, money, turf, etc and nothing outside of a SWAT team could’ve stopped it. The lawsuits poured in and thanks to the stacked deck that are our local courts, insurance companies were hammered and insurance working the way insurance does meant the property and business owners shouldered the brunt of the additional cost by way of higher premiums. Don’t complain when your opportunity to abuse people through litigation is rejected by the legislature.
7:33, Is that a hypothetical, or an actual event, on which a jury based a verdict against the store, and which withstood an appeal?
Show of hands. How many legislators in this state have ever owned, financed, started, staffed and balanced the books of a private sector business? 5%.
@732pm...
"Everyone says JPD wouldn’t track the cellphone. That maybe true, that may not be true. Until we know it’s true, we shouldnt treat comments like they are the gospel truth."
The mother of the kid told me that directly.
@6:47am
A much higher % than a couple decades ago when the chambers were filled with nothing but lawyers. That’s why they’re finally making common sense progress by turning back the unjustified premises liability suits.
They would not track the car down even though exact coordinates were being given over the phone to the cops, because the owner of the car could not give JPD the tag number, though she provided the first three letters of it. Thus, giving him time to drive to byram and BACK over by Kroger, all through town going 120-140 mph... taking her medications she will not be able to get re-filled, two brand new iphone 12's, her wallet with license, card, full of new gift cards from christmas. Just gone, because JPD could not get it together... a damn shame.
(Without mentioning the horrible camera - and it doesn't take an RV size camera to make a clear photo), how do we know this is a male carjacker? Did anyone ask what gender he/she/it/... associated with?
