Double Murder at Baptist Hospital

A man murdered two people at Baptist Hospital this morning and later killed himself at a cemetery in Pearl.

The boyfriend of Christina Davis killed the woman in the hospital parking lot. Sources say he frightened Davis yesterday.  She spent the night at a girlfriend's house out of fear.  She arrived at Baptist for work this morning but the boyfriend was waiting for her to appear and assaulted her.

A security guard, Browning Luckett,  was reporting for work as well but unfortunately, his duty weapon was secured in the hospital per MBMC policy.  All security guards who are issued firearms must pass a weapons qualifications test.

He tried to break up the attack but the boyfriend pulled out a weapon and shot them both.  Luckett fled but the boyfriend chased him.  He emptied the 29-round magazine of his .45 pistol into Luckett and Davis.  A security guard who was on duty engaged the boyfriend and exchanged fire.  The boyfriend left and went to the graveyard in Pearl where he committed suicide.

This is a tragedy.

That said, Baptist Health needs to get better training for their rent-a-cops. I recommend Boondocks Firearms Training.

An "unarmed" security guard per BH requirement-pitiful.

This was a long-time security guard, not one of the former cops they have been hiring over the last few years.

If she'd had a gun she'd have a chance.

God made Man.
John Moses Browning made them equal.

I worked there up until Hurricane Katrina on the second shift, and it really pissed me off that as a former vet I wasn’t allowed to carry. My heart goes out to those guys. The stuff that they put up with from thwarting car thieves to people flipping out takes a certain person to deal with.

Shooter was from pearl. Shot ex wife. Killed himself later in cemetery in pearl. Mental illness

That security guard’s death is on Baptist’s hands for not letting guards be armed. What else was he supposed to do? Karate chop the bullets?

11:05, there's no way for you to know that, if she was well-trained - possibly - but an ambush (as I imagine this was) is incredibly hard for even highly trained folks to defend, much less someone just going about their business.

Anyone wanna bet he had an order of protection filed against him, meaning he was prohibited from possessing a firearm, and that the parking lot is a GFZ?

Tragic and needless, but we can be assured the killer is receiving far harsher punishment by his maker than the Hinds County Justice system would deliver.

bet that gun policy changes...

Baptist Medical Center is a gun free zone. They have "Firearms Prohibited" signs on all fences, buildings, and parking garages. Didn't the persons involved read the signs?

Restraining or protective orders are next to useless.

This is more PROOF POSITIVE that GUN FREE ZONES only protect CRIMINALS! Wake up you bleeding heart liberals!

Lock and load.

Is there any safe place in Jackson? How can any city survive this descent into savagery?

Kingfish said...

Well, the couple was from Rankin County. Sorry to upset your narrative.

Am I mistaken or do I see the uniformed guards at St. Dominic wearing sidearms?

Really hope they didn't had kids.

If the employer requires/requests unarmed security, that's what the contracted service provides. If the employer requests armed security, armed security is provided. Of course the 'calibre' of guard and the cost escalate if armed guards are required. But, that's rather beside the point.

What the hell is the point of having guards with no ability to protect and defend? Visitors to a hospital are a perfect reflection of the population it serves.

As a side fact, half the visitors to UMMC Emergency are there to see about relatives and friends who've been shot or stabbed. The difference in the patients and those showing up to check on them is that the latter have not been shot or stabbed yet. And you think guards ought not be armed?

Speaking of narrative:

"This was a long-time security guard, not one of the former cops they have been hiring over the last few years."

So What? She's been picked up by a funeral home.

Red Flag Confiscation and Universal Background Checks would've prevented this double murder-suicide from happening after a judge had issued a protective order.

Rankin trash bringing their problems to Jackson. Go shoot up River Oaks Hospital and leave Jackson alone.

Update: Killer had a .45 with a 29-round clip. You read that correctly. He emptied the entire clip into the security guard

Why would any responsible person need that many bullets in their clip? How many big clips do you think he could easily carry? What reason would a person need such big clips for except mass murder?

2:24; well it didn't seem to work out this time now did it? If there was a protective order, he should not have had the firearm, and the property is a gun free zone. Wake up....criminals DON'T and WON'T follow the law.

St. D also needs to take notes on this tragic situation.

Their overweight "security on golf carts" are experts at smelling a Marlboro light in the parking garage.
But they appear to be utterly useless if something seriously should happen.

But I will give em' credit. . . they do have nice looking "big & tall" heavily starched uniforms and "Smokey the Bear" hats.

Oh yeah, they can also find a wheelchair in about 35 minutes.

Violence from relationships is not new. Red flag laws, Magazine capacity, solve nothing. A suicidal killer is about the highest level of evil.
Many we will get more information and learn something that makes entering and leaving one of the key locations in the city safer.

Stay out of Jackson!

Wow they had 6 kids. He was literally out of his mind.

To those of you asking why the guard wasn't armed..read the article ..

Reminds me of this: Armed guards in a federal judge's courtroom or that of a federal magistrate, are required to lock their duty weapons in on-premises lockers prior to leaving the courthouse.

So...what if a nutcase who wanted to shoot a judge or magistrate is otherwise on the property. The trained guard is unarmed. Typically these guys and gals (in courtrooms) are retired troopers or otherwise experienced LEO.

Makes absolutely no damned sense that armed guards, often who are deputized or are assisting federal marshals, are required to lock up their weapons inside the venue they're there to protect.

Anonymous said...

1048, let me see if I can cipher this.

They are required to leave their weapons "oupon leaving the premises". That does not read to me like "while on duty" would.
So, the guy leaving is no longer required to be protecting those Judges you mention -- but the ones who came in for their shift would be so charged, would have taken their weapons out of the locked facility, and would be their to do their job

Now - after ciphering your worries, in rereading the article about Baptist, it sounds like a similar situation. The guy in the garage that sadly got shot wasn't 'on dity' yet -- but another security guard was on duty, was armed, and chased the killer.

Have I got this right - you lock your weapon when you leave but someone else has come on duty to take your place, who would be armed.

Nobody knows meat would have happened if the guard had been armed. All of you rednecks always think more guns will solve gun violence. Moronic.

Hey, Fondren at 12:46, If someone is feloniously gun violencing you but you manage to gun violence them during the attempt, you actually DO solve the initial gun violence. Especially since A: the offender was beating her initially, not shooting and B: The guard had to run after the initial attempt to break it up, since he was unarmed.

12:31 - What's your fascination with the term 'on duty'? Maybe you've watched too much Adam-12 on TV.

In the example given at 10:48, there is no 'shift work' involved. Armed, retired troopers are stationed in the federal courtroom throughout the trial and when the trial ends for the day, they exit the courtroom and lock their duty weapon in a locker and go home. Do you actually think that if they are still armed when they leave the facility and encounter a deranged perpetrator, someone will ask if they were on duty or not when they shot the nutcase?

In the situation at hand, it appears that an unarmed guard was shot 25 times because his shift had not yet begun. 'Splain that to your cracker-eatin' frands at Saltines.

12:31 in the Baptist scenario you’re halfway wrong. 10 times out of 10 the guard on duty would’ve never been armed. You’re halfway correct however in the similarity with a bailiff’s duties in the Baptist scenario. The armed employee was likely a supervisor, and in close proximity to weapons storage.

The bigger issue is gate security, and this one appears to fall on the dispatcher since the perp entered in a non- decal vehicle. I’m not sure if the gate behind Millsaps is manned or automated, but if it’s the former I would hate to be the guy or gal that gave the killer property access. When I worked there it was manned.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
