Rush is a former smoker. Frequent listeners will note that he often says I hold here in my formerly nicotine stained fingers... when he is about to read a headline.

However, lung cancer doesn't require that you are a smoker. Household Radon or any number of nasty particles can enter your lungs and cause metastasis.

Rush is a billionaire and can afford the finest treatments on the planet. Let's see if he stays in the USA or flies to Asia or the EU for treatment.

If I'm not mistaken, Rush has been a big cigar smoker for years, and if so, then that's the culprit. I like Rush, but it's hard to feel sorry for someone that's been participating in an unhealthy habit.

In my mind, his show was the beginning of the entire "sell them what they want to hear" industry of "journalism." Fortunes have been made from his model on both sides of the political spectrum. I'm sure he wasn't the first, but to me he was. (I was in high school and my barber always played either his show or Jimmy the Greek's show on his AM radio when I was in). I don't buy Rush's schtick and think its lead to some pretty bad societal issues, but I admire the capitalism and don't blame him for problems we have today.

Mr. Limbaugh argued repeatedly against the health risks of both smoking and second-hand exposure on his program. The evidence is in plain sight even though his motivation may not be. And, while no one should ever have to endure cancer of any kind, the universe may have seen this coming.

Anyone who has listened to Rush Limbaugh knows he is warm, funny, astute and highly intelligent. Not a racist bone in his body. He does care about fairness and equality of opportunity and is conservative politically. He abhors cheap identity politics. He believes, unlike the left, that no one should be helped or hurt by the color of his or her skin. To be sure, Rush Limbaugh has never suffered fools gladly, and many of those whose feelings are hurt by his commentary reside on the left side of the political spectrum who view him as a threat in terms of exposing hypocrisy and promoting accountability. But that's on them and he shouldn't be despised for holding them to account and keeping them honest. Rush's contribution to society is immense and his views are treasured by those of us who love our country and want it preserved as a constitutional republic. Rush isn't a member of the Inevitable Gradual Decline of Western Civilization Society and uses his talents to motivate and inspire those who stand up to the status quo. Those who want something for nothing will always perpetually whine (in lieu of intelligently engaging in the issues), but Rush Limbaugh will always stand, in practice and legacy, for our cherished values and freedom. I first tuned in to Rush around 1994, and I believe his success was rooted in his ability to press emotional buttons under the guise of logic and reason. He also gave his listeners a feeling that we had been made privy to secret knowledge, from which the "mainstream" was excluded.

By appealing to our intellect, while stroking our egos and setting our emotions on fire, Rush amassed vast wealth and power. While they may prolong his time on Earth, none of that can bring him peace, which I suspect is what he really needs now.

In my opinion, Rush's worldly success depended as much on his ability to galvanize his detractors (at least) as much as his listeners. Without his detractors, Rush wouldn't have had an endless supply of enemies to rail against. His effectiveness in doing this is evident to me from the nature of the comments.

I am left of center, and, for one, I have fed the hungry, clothed the poorly clothed, visited the sick, been generous to the needy, visited widows and widowers, and I do this all for His loves sake.

Additionally, Cancer Survivor, I am active in my church; active in arts organizations, which helps lead to a stronger community. I work as a volunteer to help teachers and students, though I have no children, and I am not a teacher.

I hope that you remain cancer free! I think less vitriol might help; I'm trying hard to rid myself of same.

Why don't you prove your point by citing a source? It is easy to cut soundbites out of context. The media did this a lot to Rush. Remove the context and demonize a few words.

People could hate his opinion, but Rush is Right.

As someone said above, Rush is an entertainer. He has a great shtick, and he has done well with it. I'm on the liberal side, but I still listened in when I was on the road, just as I often listened to Paul Harvey. I rarely agreed with him, but I was not in his target audience. I just enjoyed a good showman.

I hope he recovers, however unlikely that seems to be.

Rush, like Beck and many other current radio pontificaters began their radio careers as harmless geeks but they played into the post Reagan baby boomer neo-con crowd and tied themselves to some deep pockets to become phony hard charging radio stars. But Limbaugh and Beck and others who have found celebrity seem to have bought up all the old sound tracks that don't suit their current persona. WHBQ Memphis introduced talk radio to north Mississippi long ago with Oliver C Reed who was more knowledgeable than any of the nationally syndicated personalities that followed him. Mark Davis kept Reed on the safe side of PC when that was a must but it was difficult. But now Davis is somewhere in Texas wondering how Limbaugh took off like a rocket while he just kept plowing on.

The problem with people like is you never listened to Rush for a whole week.

He often gets former liberal callers who will admit to listening out of curiosity. After a week the curiosity becomes rage as you realized how many leftist lies you believed for so long.

Finally after a month is the transition is to a grateful dittohead who can't miss a show and even listens to the "Week in Review" replay on Saturday.
