When the Music Stops

Great.  A school district is forced to cut its music education programs. The Clarion-Ledger reported:

A cash-strapped school district in southwestern Mississippi will eliminate its music program for elementary school students.

The superintendent of Amite County schools, Scotty Whittington, tells the Enterprise-Journal that the district needs to find $500,000 in next year's budget. He also says the district needs to hire a counselor for Amite County Elementary School, and deleting the school's music program is one of the only viable options to save money.

An assistant principal, Jasmine Jackson, opposes the change, which is set for the 2019-20 school year. She says music education can help students with hand-eye coordination, memory, problem-solving and other skills.

Jackson says music education can help the school district as it works to pull up its accountability rating and promote students' educational well-being for years to come.
One hates to see this happen as music has a fundamental role to play in education.  It helps young brains develop,  It helps kids learn math.  It gives children makes learning fun for kids.  There is a reason Aristotle and the great philosophers considered music to be an essential part of education.  One hopes the district can restore the cuts.

If important to that community the school district should increase its millage.

This is why we need the lotto, we need legal weed, and we need to legalize and tax prostitution. The revenues from taxing Marijuana and Prostitution alone would pay for the music in the school district. How much Marijuana and prostitution already illegally takes place in Amite county and the county don't receive any revenue.

When is Mississippi going to stop being a Baptist Theocracy and actually make some progress?

Doc C, you mean same way the gambling taxes were going to fund education and solve all the state's financial problems. You've already been smoking it.

We need to consolidate more school districts.

According to Tater, all taxes are bad. That's why this state is at the bottom of the list for everything. He'll hide behind the casinos and lottery though. In the end, all the blame goes to the electorate. Tater is still a spineless tool. He never had an original idea in his life. Certainly not any that he had to go out on a limb for.

C-note, great ideas. The proprietors may have difficulty finding "hostesses," but they can run it by hand until fully staffed.

I agree with Tate. Schools are socialist and anything socialist is bad! Kids don’t need schools paid for by taxes. If all these parents weren’t so lazy, they could afford to pay for school themselves or homeschool them if they can’t afford it. If those aren’t an option, the church will take care of them.

I'm sure that the way to the promised land is to cut taxes until you can drown government in the bathtub.

Just look at how kansA$$ is leading the way!

KF is right. Far too many studies show that music actually helps with brain development, coordination, team building, and discipline. Watch their test scores fall even further thanks to this...

As an aside, this is what "starving the beast" looks like.

Enjoy.

An awful lot of comments on here and I'll bet that none of them have looked at the Amite County School District's budget - what are they spending money on; what revenue are they receiving from local, state and federal.

Yes, music programs are important. Are they the only things that are important? Hell no. Let's check the administrative expenses. What about the athletic programs? Are they more important than music programs? The district (assistant principal) claims that they needed to hire a counselor. Maybe so - is that more important than a music program? Or is it more important than an "assistant principal"? How many students does the district have? Do districts need superintendents, principals and assistant principals?

Or, do we just need to find any and every reason to take pot shots at the LG - Tate Reeves? Not the Governor. Or the Speaker. Or the (overpaid) State Superintendent of Education. Its all Tater's fault. What about the local officials - that's where much of the funding is supposed to come from for local districts - what part of the local budget has gone to the schools?

While we are at it, does this school district provide appropriate educational opportunities for their special needs kids? Those that are in love with the government schools getting whatever money they want, not need but want, claim that they should be the ones taking care of those children as well. How's that working out in Amite County?

Wondering minds want to know - much more interesting thoughts than the ignorant comments provided thus far without any facts, figures or information behind them.

Tater must follow this blog by the minute.

Based on the Amite County School District website, they have an elementary school, a high school and a Vo-Tech school. Each has a principal and an assistant principal. The first thing the superintendent did when reelected in 2015 was ask for a 50% increase in his salary.

Currently, their athletic program consists of:

Football - Boys JV and Boys Varsity

Volleyball - Boys varsity and girls varsity

Basketball - Boys JV, Boys freshmen, and boys varsity

Baseball - Boys Junior High, Boys JV and Boys varsity

Track and field - Boys JV and Varsity
Girls JV and Varsity

Weight Lifting
and
Archery.

Of course, there is also cheerleading year round and band year round.

Understand that none of these programs could be cut, reduced or combined; or administrative staff (15 positions in superintendent's office) reduced.

Those that want to complain because the local district leadership eliminated music programs should be asking why that program rather than other possibilities considered when needing to find $500,000 in their next year's budget. (BTW, I'll bet that there wasn't nearly $500k being spent on music programs in their elementary schools, but that's another fact that could be questions.)

Its not all about education -- its all about the spending of education dollars.

I'll bet you I can find enough money to save the music program. The children will like it, but the soon to fired administrators won't.

Not disagreeing with you one bit.

Pension expenses also went up as well. Some due to a change in GASB rules.

With the state and federal guidance, most programs are in jeopardy because of lack of supervision. It's a double edge sword.

Amite County shouldn't be a separate school district. It should be consolidated with McComb or another close by district. However, that won't change all of its problems. There is no tax base. There just isn't. Music should not be cut. These kids are already experience deprived they need all the exposure to art and music they can get.

Tater wants to hold the line on taxes. these critics want unlimited taxes to feed the "beast." the problem is not taxes being too low. the problem is school decision makers do not know how to set priorities and stick to them. blame Tater or blame the spending decisions. School administrators making bad spending decisions? Say it isn't so!!!! Hood and his crowd would say it's all tater's fault. yeah right!

Anonymous said...

You mean, legalized gambling isn't saving us despite the social costs?

Anonymous said...

Who are the people making these decisions, or at least recommending them to the school boards? Principals and superintendents. With very few exceptions, most at the elementary level, who are the principals and superintendents? Former coaches. Do you really expect a former coach to support music over athletics? I'm surprised we have any music programs left anywhere.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
