The family of the late Helen Harrion still waits for justice to be served after the South Jackson grandmother was killed five years ago. A Hinds County grand jury indicted Alonzo Stewart for her murder but the case continues remain stuck in the mud of the state mental health system.

The mother of six was killed in 2014 after she called 911 at 2:23 AM. The police came to her home eight minutes later but left when no one answered the door. She was shot to death in her home. JPD arrested Stewart for her murder. The 34 year-old Stewart cut her grass and lived down the street from her.
A Hinds County grand jury indicted Alonzo Stewart for capital murder for the death of the 67 year-old Ms. Harrion on July 15, 2014. The grand jury also indicted him for house burglary and a felon in possession of a firearm. He was convicted of cocaine possession in 2010. The case was assigned to Circuit Judge William Gowan.
Stewart's attorney filed a motion for a mental evaluation in February 2015. Judge Gowan ordered Stewart to undergo a mental evaluation at Whitfield. A psychiatric report was finally provided to the Court last February - four years after the initial request. However, Judge Faye Peterson recused herself from the case. The case is assigned to Judge Winston Kidd.
Meanwhile the familiy of Helen Harrion continues to wait.... and wait..... and wait. Funny how none of the so-called criminal justice reformers speak out for them, right C.J., Jody, and Cliff? Of course, the Republicans in the legislature didn't exactly do anything to fund facilities such as Whitfield so suspects such as this one can be tried an possibly convicted. Easier to rant about Jackson crime than actually doing something about it.

I can’t imagine. Prayers for her family.
Another criminal plays the system, extending justice for years and years as those they harmed continue to suffer their loss.
Prayers for them and for the dead. Prayers for actual justice, someday, too far out in the future.
First we bitch about lack of mental health treatment and now we bitch about this guy receiving it for the past five years. I agree that he needs to be fried like a Waffle House egg, but we're victims of the system here.
The attitudes of many otherwise decent people toward properly addressing/funding mental health issues are baffling at best, and at worst show the astounding lack of self-awareness of many who would claim to live to serve a higher purpose.
I'm not bitching about it. I'm bitching about the inability to fix the mental health mess at the state level so the suspects can be moved through the system much more quickly. Over in Madison County, Archie's case was delayed for quite some time because of the mental evaluation issue as well. Not fair to the defendants, not fair to the victims, and it costs the counties more money to keep them locked up while they await trial.
Sick that we live in a world where someone can look at that mugshot of that murdering rapist and see something other than a feral beast that should be executed.
This kind of sickness in the system is what drives the masses of fed up people to take politicians and judges to the guilloteen. And rightly so. Hope they get this mess straightened out. This lady was the example of what society should be, and it is a spit in her face for the system to protect a degenerate animal like the one who attacked her. He should be transferred to an Asian country where they torture him to death like he did to this lady. Make him suffer for days and weeks. Pain so excruciating they have to shoot him full of adrenaline to keep him conscious. Prayers for her family as they endure this madness why their representatives lie to their face and laugh behind their back.
