Funny of the Day

Please don't laugh.  A Northeast Jackson woman actually went to the City Council to complain about blighted properties on her street.

Hinds County property records show the house on 1425 Winchester Street is owned by Dr. Christi Steijen of Little Rock, Arkansas.  The property at 1626 Winchester Street is owned by Anthony and Marion Becker.  However, the taxes have not been paid since 2013 and a MSTREO, LLC in San Diego apparently obtained the property through a tax sale.

The nerve of that woman! Who does she think she is, a taxpayer?

The Jackson city council doesn't represent the people! They represent their own self-interests.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have found funny about this request. Blighted properties are a problem all over Jackson, and I guess even Ward 1 isn't immune, or what am I missing here?

There are a few dumps on Winchester, but I would be happy to give this sweet lady a tour of Jackson to put things in context. Wouldn’t have to go far, either. Go ride down Woodbury, Cedarhurst, or Broadmoor (all off Manhatten, just north of Northside). The closer you get to state street in that neighborhood, the worse it gets. And let’s not forget Mcdowell road. Lock and load people.

What’s so funny about this? Is it that the city will ignore her?

Will someone please take 9:42 AM aside and educate him (or her)? First, show him (or her) s-a-r-c-a-s-m in the dictionary, and then give him a little history on the "responsiveness" of the council during open comment time.

The city of Jacktown has much bigger fish to fry than a few dilapidated houses in NE Jackson. I understand that those folks in Ward 1 think that they are special, but when the city has a hard time providing basic necessities (clean water, police protection, etc.), that poor lady is just pissing in the wind. I really hate it for her and those other responsible, tax-paying, law-abiding property & home owners in Jackson, but the providing of basic needs must come first (and they aren't and wont for a long time).

It all ties in together. A shame you don't see why.

State law should be changed to allow the city to have quicker options for properties with unpaid taxes, plus to give new remedies for those who buy tax lien properties and let them fall to blight. There is so much legalistic red tape that has to be followed under current law and this is a dis-incentive for the city to focus on these problems. A faster standard can be set up to just apply to Jackson or to the large cities in MS.

This is a great example of citizen participation. WTH do you find funny?

Someone, anyone, please list what Lumumba has accomplished after 1 1/2 years in office?

All the houses on the south side of Winchester with the odd numbered street numbers are built on the side of a hill with major clay underneath. As a result, most have serious foundation problems and some have literally been sliding down the hill for forty-fifty years. Not much way to repair and make it cost effective.

She is doing all she can. I don’t understand what’s so funny either? If no one gets it, maybe the joke wasn’t very good

Perception of blight.

Nice lady who should be given attention but will not. The only thing she did wrong was not to have moved out of Jackson about 20+ years ago.

I reported a dangerous pot hole where Manhatten crosses Northside to Robert Miller. Old Robert told me it wasn't professional how I reported it, and that i needed to call 911. Since when did the police start filling in pot holes. Welcome to Little Detroit of Mississippi.

As a former resident of Detroit Michigan I must again ask that you hicks stop insulting a once great metropolis that is in the process of rebounding from economic disaster, comparing it to this hell hole that never was and never will be. 11:35 please start calling Jackson little Tombstone or something else more appropriate. Thank you.

I think he meant "311", 11:35.

Where are Frank Milton's bulldozers when you need them?

Maybe this will help you understand the post.

Unfortunately this honorable lady is too white to get any assistance from the council.

The sad thing is she has a legit complaint, has addresses, specific violations, and her facts are in order. She was polite and presented her complaint in a clear and concise and fair manner. The board's response was "next".

This woman made a very reasonable, respectful and thoughtful request of the city council. My bet is that nothing will come of it.

In answer to the question, "what's so funny about this video", I'd have to say it was her closing line, that Jackson is "a great place to live".

She's too good for Jackson

Not to mention that her councilman Republican Ashby foote will do nothing about this issue and likely won't return her calls. He's the absolute worst. I like him as a person but he's an awful councilperson.

The poor lady is confused. She walked into the meeting actually believing that they give a shit about white people and their problems.

Mississippi has always favored property owners at the expense of neighborhoods, towns and cities.

There are few incentives to encourage a property owner to adequately or even safely maintain his property.

Even when there are covenants, homeowners' associations don't have the excess funds or free time to take legal measures to enforce the covenants and if they did, they are unlikely to be successful.

The "laws" to hold a property owner responsible for the condition of his property are a joke in Mississippi.

Ashby spends his time reviewing books on Saudi oil for the Northside Sun.

He is worthless.

I understand he's in the minority on the board. But he's not vocal.

It is a shame to have to say this but I think Whitwell did a better job.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
