The city of Jackson issued the following chart and statement about the FY2019 budget on it's Facebook page.
The image below is a comparative chart dating back to 2010 of the budgets of previous administrations.
As you can see, the current budget for which Mayor Lumumba has been operating in is only $1,093,588.00 – nearly half a million dollars below the lowest budget reflected. What this administration is asking for in the next fiscal year is $1,636,831.00, reflecting a normal standard to do the work necessary to move Jackson into the 21st century and operate as a true capital city. Furthermore, it’s a figure that comes in below the previous two administrations.
Under a shell budget, Mayor Lumumba has been able to take an overall budget deficit and turn it into a surplus. Additionally, this administration has been able to take furloughed city employees and recommend a 2% cost of living adjustment, all while being understaffed and with an operating budget less than that of the City Clerk’s Office.

Hey Lumumba, why don’t your ask those racist assholes and lawyer that works for Donna Ladd for it? They seem to have all the answers when they show up and shout down white peoples that are simply trying to have a discussion.
I hope Jackson withers away and dies on the vine.
Please respect our white dollars.
I say if he was able to operate with $1 million and the City didn't fall apart, it should stay at that level.
Under the Mayor's budget, the city is spending less of its general revenue to fix roads and streets than any administration - ever. Under the Mayor's budget, the city of Jackson is spending less on street maintenance than the city of Forest. Under the Mayor's budget, the city cant repair broken water or sewer lines. Under the Mayor's budget the taxpaying residents are paying a higher tax rate than ever before.
Tell this same Mayor to fix the streets, the water, and the sewer before he puts more people on his payroll to follow him around in his enterouge making him think he is more important than any elected official at anylevel. His enforce out to be rnough, but no - he has to have the shadow mayor along at all times to make sure he doesn't step out of line of the 'people's republic plan'.
But it's becomin a "radical city!"
The problem in the city is there is very little or no middle class... the families in NE Jackson belhaven and Fondren can easily afford to send multiple kids to JA, prep st Andrews MRA etc... these families spend 45-70k a year on kids education alone while being CC members and having condo or beach house yet the other half of city can't afford gas for a car. Need some middle ground.
As long as his relatives and his patronage no-show folks that he will be putting on the payroll from The Fondren and The Belhaven are certified, they are good to go.
10:29 am You are a jerk.
And I doubt any of you commenting actually live in Jackson or have been in the city lately. If you had, you'd see progress that is impressive and new construction and work on roads and new businesses. And, you'd see police presence.
But, you really don't keep up with crime stats, do you? You'd like to focus on the crime reported in Jackson and not elsewhere in this State or in the country for cities this size.
And, while those of us who do live in Jackson appreciate constructive criticism and proposed solutions, we are not impressed by your baseless dire predictions, your racism that isn't even thinly veiled, and your complete ignorance of city government.
I have no objection to how our current mayor has set priorities after inheriting a mess.
Sorry, no good, unsuccessful, resentful, hateful people plague every race and every party and are SO easily recognized when they type. You are no different than Minka.
Previous administrations may have had more money to pass around for desk jobs and sinecures for friends and family, but that's part of the reason we're having so much more crime and infrastructure problems, problems which were already bad enough. The Mayor should set an example and stick with what he got last year, and focus on hiring more law enforcement and public works people. We don't need visionaries; we need boots on the ground.
The Mayor's office should not be a stateroom on the Titanic.
"But, you really don't keep up with crime stats, do you? You'd like to focus on the crime reported in Jackson and not elsewhere in this State or in the country for cities this size.
1:43; Please get someone to pull your head out of your ass. If you knew how to look up national crime stats for cities the size of Jackson, you'd know just how foolish you look with this post. Thankfully you didn't include your name.
143, I absolutely do love in Jackson. Have for many years. And have watched this mayor and the few before him poss away dollars on cap and personal trappings while the city is falling apart.
For a city this size to spend 1 million TOTAL on street repairs and maintenance - and then this year have this mayor propose to cut it in half is bullshit. Ten years ago (before Harvey screed the pooch) city was spending ten to twenty times this much but then decided donating to cultural museums was,a more important function of city government than maintaining it's infrastructure.
If mayor wants to cut street maintenance in half ($500k) so he can increase his office staff by $500k then it shows his priorities no matter how you want to sugarcoat it.
What is a white dollar?
You can go to Goodwill & get nice business desk & chair for $100.00.
$300,000 for Advertising ?
Stokes for Mayor.
3:16 By all means, let me explain by my own example. No, I’m not who you responded to but I did feel compelled to elaborate. I pay $60,000 per year for property taxes for parcels I own in downtown Jackson. I drive around on third world streets and get f’n ignored when I ask the city for help with water and drainage issues on and around my property. I was born here and never left this town. I have invested heavily in real estate downtown for the last 35 years with hopes of having an administration in control of an f’n capital city that could actually perform. So far, I have been totally disappointed in how this white guys money “dollars “ have been wasted away over the years with nothing to enhance the substantial investment I’ve made in all of my properties. I have increased the tax base, brought permanent residents downtown and bring hundreds into town on any given weekend night for events. Just not feeling the love.
@1:43 PM, would you like cheese with your white whine?
I.m glad the mayor has his priorities straight.
I just want to know how he drives over the 48 potholes in the middle of Northside Drive and Ole Canton Road.
Must be radical or some such.
2:54 pm I actually know how to do statistical comparisons so I chose per capita crime in cities with populations of 100000-250000.
In murder rates, we do better than Orlando, Knoxville, Hartford, New Haven, Syracuse, and Springfield to name cities you might recognize.
And, wow, the property crimes in Brownsville, Texas are off the charts as are the rapes in Ft Lauderdale.
Since you are afraid to come to Jackson to the zoo, for God's sake don't take your children or grandchildren to Disneyworld!
See some capitol cities ? Go to their State blog sites and see if their citizens are bashing their capitol. They aren't. They have more sense as they get it will hurt the entire state economically if they were so foolish.
Guess what else is not on that list? Detroit or Chicago because they are BIGGER and only someone who is either a bigot or math challenged would compare a city the size of Jackson with either .
And, wow, more than a few of the worst cities can't blame race as they are governed and populated by a huge majority of white folks!
And, guess what else, the FBI stats for these cities didn't look at poverty levels even though the FBI long ago concluded that poverty is a major factor in crime rates.
Please take a graduate level statistics course before you opine and make yourself look foolish.
@9:24
With all due respect what in the world were you thinking investing in a town that's been doomed to reach it's current status for decades ? BTW I'm opening a ski lodge in Holmes county and I'm looking for investors !
Attn 9:44 Chicago is 16 times as large as Jackson. Jackson year to date has had 61 confirmed murders this year. This means that if Chicago had the same percentage of murders as Jacktown, it would have had 976 murders instead of the 370 currently reported. Spin it any way you deem fit, but the murder rate in Jackson overwhelms that of Chicago.
3:16/9:24, you don't think much of yourself do you. You do know that egos pop when they get too big don't you?
@12:10
You remind me of my NE Jackson neighbor that complained last month when he had to go to Madison to check on his rental property and bitched about going to the grocery store out there with all public school parents. I guess he prefers being in Jackson with his elite st Andrews or JA prep families. Anyway point taken about people using the race card. No one gives a rats a$$ because it's been overplayed and seen as common and really has no effect on people anymore.
That $300k for advertising will be used as a slush fund for Mayor Yammerlot to promote himself. He got the idea from the Republicans in state office.
10:33 am Yes, Chicago's murders are down this year.
I would remind you that Chicago and other larger cities have more resources to combat crime. And, that is one of a few reasons you don't compare apples to oranges.
Statistics 101 Your sample populations must be comparable. You cannot compare Jackson to a small town or a large city.
Indeed, most all of the bogus research and research that proves useless is because the researches didn't pick the universal sample or test sample well.
Running a CE ratio will help test determining factors 10:33, do you even know what that is?
