Highly-paid executives. Money hidden in off-shore accounts. Tax-exempt status. Ponzi scheme? Tax-avoidance for the 1%? Nope. Such descriptions fit none other than the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Washington Examiner reported yesterday:
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a liberal, Alabama-based 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization that has gained prominence on the left for its "hate group" designations, pushes millions of dollars to offshore entities as part of its business dealings, records show.
Additionally, the nonprofit pays lucrative six-figure salaries to its top directors and key employees while spending little on legal services despite its stated intent of "fighting hate and bigotry" using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy....
The SPLC has turned into a fundraising powerhouse, recording more than $50 million in contributions and $328 million in net assets on its 2015 Form 990, the most recently available tax form from the nonprofit. SPLC's Form 990-T, its business income tax return, from the same year shows that they have "financial interests" in the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda. No information is available beyond the acknowledgment of the interests at the bottom of the form.....
On March 1, 2015, SPLC sent $2,200,000 to an entity incorporated in Canana Bay, Cayman Islands, according to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) records and run by a firm firm based in Greenwich, Ct. Another $2,200,000 cash transfer was made on the same day to another fund whose business is located at the same address as the previous fund in the Cayman Islands, according to SEC records..... Rest of article.
Stir up the public with messages of fighting evil, socking away money offshore, paying the leaders extravagant salaries. Sounds more like Jimmy Swaggart or Jim Bakker than a social justice organization fighting for the poor. Of course, some animals are more equal than others.

Is anything they've done illegal?
Not in your uneducated opinion.....in reality.
Not surprising at all ---- those who sell themselves as social justice warriors are often the biggest hypocrites. SPLC used to do some pretty good work on domestic extremism, but their political leanings have chilled their impartial approach. I'm still waiting for their report on Antifa (I won't hold my breath).
As a researcher and analyst I lost respect for their work some time ago as it seems they have a severe case of selective outrage. Akin to the National Organization for (some) Women - you can keep your group off of the SPLC hate map as long as your political ideology aligns with theirs.
Your better than this Kingfish. I never taught you would resort to republishing this kind of Bull. This is Click Bait I hope you get it on a slow weekend.
Riddle me this arm-chair accountants and tax lawyers: As a non-profit (501(c)(3)) why (in this reality) would they even need to utilize off-shore accounts/entities?
Silence DoGood
George Soros gives million of dollars to SPLC.
Is there a plausible legal reason to use such vehicles?
Do you know?
Or do you just like to use words to scare people into thinking it's wrong?
Non profits, all too often, mean the executives siphon off so much money there is not profit to report or pay taxes on. In this case they have pretty large cash reserves. Perhaps not illegally but questionable. So they really only spent $70,000 on litigation?
Sort of like the BBB. You get an A rating if you send them money and if not you get your reputation tarnished. The modern day version of this is your computer gets hijacked and you must pay thousands to retrieve your data.
Obviously, ther are some gullible dupes responding to your article. It has been widely accepted for some time that Morris Dees is a charlatan usin "Social Justice" as a front to take down conservative groups and to line his pockets. Just because they claim to be a watchdog group doesn't mean thay aren't little more than hucksters playing on people's fears.
Aside from the fact that The Washington Times is at least as biased to the right as The New York Times is to the left, the " six figured salary" phrase raised my suspicions about the reliability of this piece.
$100,000 is six figures and would be a very small salary. If it were a shocking salary, they would have pounced on it.

You are so smart.
Tell us how you became so brilliant?
Was it Fox News with beck?
Please don't hurt yourself alot
I have to laugh at the George Soros comment.
It's becoming clear that he's the new boogey man of the alt-right.
I've never seen more bizarre false propaganda about an individual on either side of politics that the stepped up attack on him.
The dumbest attack is that he was a Nazi and a photo of someone who wasn't him.
He was 13 years old when Nazis invaded his country and his family went into hiding and fought the Nazis.
Just that his age ought to have been a hint to people who fell for that one.
I don't like that billionaires buy political influence and support propaganda, be it on the right or the left, but it's that they can do it that we should oppose. Soros is no different from the Koch brothers except in a point of view.
The ruling that a corporation is a person is just ridiculous. I would mind the notion that groups can pool contributions to a political campaign, but when they do so, they need to be willing to put their names to it without any suspicion of pressure from their employers.
@9:02 PM: The $61,000 in "legal services" was for legal services rendered to SPLC, not legal services rendered by SPLC. I agree with others who have noted that the article is just a bunch of numbers without context or any attempt to explain.
While I am not a fan of the SPLC, it is possible that the cash trail to an offshore account is merely an investment in an investment fund managed by a US Investment advisor. Most US tax exempt charities who make such investments do so through a non US entity to avoid any unintended US tax consequences. This is not to say that SPLC supporters should not demand an explanation.
Your better than this Kingfish. I never taught you would resort to republishing this kind of Bull. This is Click Bait I hope you get it on a slow weekend.
You are such a whiny mess. Seek medical attention for your inferiority problem before it is too late.
I thunk you hit a raw nerve wif sum of deez people.
If it's illegal for an individual or corporations to deposit money in offshore accounts, then it should be illegal for a non-profit to do so. WhT makes them any different? It's an easy way to launder money. And yes, there have been many people and businesses caught within the last few years doing this. But, as long as it has "poverty" and "law" in the mix somehow you lefties think it's ok.
This is not the Washington Times although the Times had some good reporters once such as Bill Gertz and Byron York.
Dees makes a point. I wouldn't have posted article if it didn't have links to actual tax returns for SPLC. I think it's obvious that Center spends more than $61,000 per year or whatever it was on lawyers judging by the number of lawsuits filed each year. Those are probably filed and fought by SPLC lawyers who are paid by the SPLC. However, I think it is required to include the name, position, and salary of anyone paid more than $50,000 per year.
https://www.lc.org/newsroom/details/debunking-the-splc-hate-group-myth-1
Link above takes you to an article written nearly 2 years ago that mentions these same accounts and cites a 2010 SPLC tax return as the source.
To the same person who has posted at least 5 times here ---I agree with 10:26 and 10:30 -- read the numbers. They're quite telling and only a snapshot -- what happened in all the other years? This is beginning to smell like Planned Parenthood.
Also -- we all understand fully George Soros -- he's not the boogeyman -- he's the devil incarnate. Refute all the organizations he has either founded, funded or has ties to and our current unstable situation worldwide. My guess -- you're aligned with one of those organizations and YOUR full time job is to troll sites and defend or refute anything negative about Mr. Soros and his ilk -- http://humanevents.com/2011/04/02/top-10-reasons-george-soros-is-dangerous/
SPLC and MANY others are funded by Soros hence hate is something they sale as a commodity -- http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/viewSubCategory.asp?id=1237 - It's stunning to see how he spends his money and how it affects all of us and we JUST don't know it. SPLC is just a poster child of how he does business.
Also -- cease with the Soros - Jewish - Nazi connection - if you really want to now how he survived the war -- look at his interviews in the old 60 minutes archives. What he purports he is and what he really is are two very different things. Quite a telling article: http://dailycaller.com/2017/07/31/the-anti-fascist-fascist/
7:29am nails it in one sentence
The evil SPLC named the Family Research Council a "hate group" several years ago. A homosexual went to FRC's office and shot the place up, wounding a black security guard. He had a backpack full of Chik-fil-A he was going to cram into his dead victims' mouths. Because SPLC classifies that restaurant as a "hate group" too.
SPLC is a communist-like organization that hates Christians and conservatives, while giving cover to a truly hateful religion, Islam.
However, I think it is required to include the name, position, and salary of anyone paid more than $50,000 per year.
I believe it starts at $100,000.....
I find it very interesting that the naysayers to this article call names and make sweeping statements but do not refute the documentation.
Kudos to Kingfish for posting this article.
Just another non profit laundering money.
We have a state overrun with them, most of which are hiding behind the cloak of "religion".
The article sounds like it was written by Alex Jones and the Infowars staff. This very same article is posted on numerous alt-right anti-Semitic sites today. It is part of an organized smear.
It took me about 3 minutes to find AGR funds. Like many investment funds they are located offshore, nothing unusual about that.

2:52: I fixed your post for you.
"Just another non profit laundering money.

To be sure, there are religious frauds. But don't overlook the tremendous value to society brought by the Salvation Army and others.
6:25, the poster said nothing about the Salvation Army or any others by name. It is obvious from the sheer numbers alone, churches are a favorite for nefarious business.
Why in some cases the financial aspect of things, is the least of their sin.
This very same article is posted on numerous alt-right anti-Semitic sites today.
Links? Put up.
Re: The anti-Semite slur. CNN criticised a Trump speech writer as being anti-Semitic. The speech writer in question is Jewish.
If an article can only make the reader speculate as to why certain actions were taken....without more....
It's tripe.
What is the big deal about these vehicles?
Anyone?
Anyone?
2:18 -NON-PROFITS are not supposed to take funds, and use those funds to line the pockets of those working for them, all tax free!! Inflated salaries are not acceptable and it states that Morris Dees is paid in excess of $350k in Montgomery, AL -- and the CEO is above $375k in Montgomery, AL (note the location of Montgomery, AL where I believe salaries in excess of $300k would allow them to have a pretty damn good lifestyle, all supported by selling hate). They're driving their salaries up which should be questionable to the IRS on a 501C3,, and in addition, have overhead reimbursements (insurances, 401ks, etc.) that probably bring these guys close to $500k annually.
Again, This is a non-profit -- why the hell are they not plowing those funds back into communities, into schools, into day cares, mentoring programs, community block grants, scholarships......the list goes on and on. They're sending them off shore into a non-regulated account where we have no clue how this NON-TAXABLE money is being redistributed ultimately, and to whom and how.
If you don't see anything wrong with that -- then god help you. I hope you're not an accountant or attorney. If this was a conservative organization doing the same thing, it would be on the 24 hour news cycle over and over and over and over and over.............

Until YOU learn the difference between 'your' and 'you're', and the difference between 'taught' and 'thought', would you please keep your illiterate ass away from this forum? I'm tired of reading your pathetic posts.
@9:55PM +1000
The SPLC's work in Mississippi right now focuses on fighting charter schools in the state. So, the Southern Poverty law center is using lawyers to keep southern poor people trapped in horrible schools. The notion that they are advocates for the poor is laughable. They are advocates for trial lawyers.
6:43 am
Nice try.
The trial lawyer smear is over.....they have no power.
Now to denigrate a group you have to equate them with the alt right and nazis.....the alt right white supremacists....alt right and Fox News.....all the same.
So try again with a comparison that means something.

"Soros is no different from the Koch brothers except in a point of view."
You're kidding, right? Or grossly misinformed?
Soros is not American. This country's best interests are the least of his concerns.
The Koch brothers are American. They lover their country and are committed to making it better through philanthropy.
Soros does not give to any philanthropies. His MO is to destroy and divide the populace and use his ill-gotten money to fund media smear experts, vote-fraud (community) organizers, and violent leftist protesters. He tears down.
The Koch brothers have given millions upon millions to cancer research and cancer treatment hospitals. They build.
Soros is also a criminal - look that one up.
