You can't make this up. Attorney Generalissimo James Tiberius Hood issued the following statement.
JACKSON—Today,
Attorney General Jim Hood announced the arrest of 30-year-old Natasha
Lesha Stephens for fraudulently acting as a highway patrolman recruit to
raise money online.
Stephens, of Tupelo, was arrested at her home Friday
by Investigator Lee McDivitt with the Attorney General’s Consumer
Protection Division, with assistance from detectives
with the Tupelo Police Department. Stephens set up a GoFundMe page
online to raise $1,000 for what she listed as required items for
Mississippi Highway Patrol Cadet Class 62, to which she claimed on the
page that she had been accepted.
In
describing the fake campaign, Stephens wrote: "I have been blessed with
the opportunity to become a part of something much higher than myself. I
have been accepted in the
Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Cadet Class 62 that begins this
October. A list of required items has been given. Unfortunately I am
unable to financially obtain those items. I am asking for help in order
to be able to be apart of this opportunity. The cost
is $1000. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Help
spread the word!"
Stephens
is charged with one felony count of wire and mail fraud. She faces up
to five years in prison. A charge is merely an accusation, and the
defendant is presumed innocent
unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of
law.
"Our
office has gotten this fraudulent page shut down," said General Hood.
"Do not give money to this person, and if you already have, contact our
office immediately."

This
case was investigated by McDivitt, with assistance from detectives in
the Tupelo Police Department, and will be prosecuted by Special
Assistant Attorney General Patrick
Beasley.

She would be perfect for MHP....predisposed to fraud and theft, she'd fit right in with the DUI folks.
She would really fit right in with our elected officials (Feel Bryant, Tater Tot Reeves, etc). Her Momma better start a GoFundMe page to pay for her defense. Bye Felicia, I mean Natasha. Miss you. Love you. Mean it.
Glad this thug is off the streets.
don't need a new class at MHP need to get the one's they have now working. Go to headquarters and give everyone with a uniform a car and put them on the road.
no need to have a new Class at MHP just put the ones we have to work instead of sitting at headquarters.
I see what you did there 11:30 and 11:35, mentioning work and MHP in the same sentence...don't you realize that the MHP uniform is a symbol of entitlement and an excuse to act immorally and illegally with absolute impunity?
To all those making disparaging remarks about MHP:
I don't know your professions and don't really care. Are all those employed in the same profession without fault? I seriously doubt it. I read every day about corrupt lawyers, doctors, stockbrokers, secretaries, pharmacists, talk show hosts, teachers, truck drivers, ditch diggers and others. Does this mean that all in these professions are stupid, crooked or lazy? Absolutely not! I have a feeling you dislike the MHP and other LEO because you yourself have done something illegal and gotten caught. Sorry, but your stupid actions don't make LEO abusers of power when you get caught. Like it or not we are a nation of laws and these fine men and women are sworn to uphold them. Take some personal responsibility for you actions and stop blaming those people that are out there to protect you. Face it, sometimes you need protection from yourself!
1:44, we're just pointing out the fact that folks in positions of trust who take an oath to enforce the law shouldn't make a regular practice of breaking it. MHP sells itself as elite, both professionally and morally - tell me how altering documents over a period of several years to make extra money, a married trooper screwing the comptroller in the stairwell, screwing informants and subordinates meets that standard. MHP seems to have a real integrity problem.
My point is the actions of a few in any given profession shouldn't be taken as the actions of all in that profession.
3:01 - agree, but finish this sentence: Used car salespeople are _________.
11:30-Every law enforcement officer and a large number of civilian employees already have a vehicle. Even if they are just going to the office.
"In the stairwell...." DAYUM!
@ 3:22 PM . . . overly aggressive in the pursuit of a sale of a motor vehicle of questionable quality.
5:01, so we're subsidizing all of DPS' commute?
KF - you should poll the troopers and have them vote on the most romantic spot for them to get it on --- a weigh station, a stairwell, the boom boom room in the basement of HQ, or in a sleazy hotel in West Jackson??
Thank you, 1:44 pm for defending the MHP! I believe in the rule of law, i respect LEOs, and admire them for doing a thankless task! I was so surprised to read all the disparaging comments of the MHP. The next time you need help on the highway, I'm sure you'll be glad to see the blue lights & the uniform of a MHP officer. Are there bad apples? Yes. Are there bad apples in other occupations? Yes. Are there bad apples in families? Yes. Bad apples everywhere you look. We should be careful about throwing stones, generally speaking. Maybe certain individuals deserve the criticisms, but what about those who protect & serve with honor & integrity?
@1:44
Your entire post rests on a faulty premise. According to you, if we do not fall into this category:
"I have a feeling you dislike the MHP and other LEO because you yourself have done something illegal and gotten caught," we are free to have any negative opinion about law enforcement we want to have.
Thank you for that permission since I do not fall into that category.
Keep on making those assumptions. They seem to have gotten you this far in life.
