Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement:
Rankin County Jury Duty Scam Resurfaces
On the 29th day of
September 2016, a complainant came into the office to report that he and
his parents had received a fake jury duty call by someone who had
identified himself as Deputy White and tried to
get them to go to the Rite Aid on McDowell Road in Jackson to get Money
Pack Cards to send to pay for missing Jury Duty. This suspect gave
them a phone number
601-732-5957
which is a fake Rankin County Sheriff's Department recording. Another
elderly woman had also received a phone call from this individual. The
suspect seems to be targeting the elderly and even had their home
information when he called the
complainants. There is a strong possibility that a business that
trades with the elderly has been hacked. The number when called fast
enough that it cannot reset will give a voicemail recording of a Verizon
cell phone in Idaho. If you receive phone calls
from anyone claiming to work for the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department
who is asking you for money due to you missing Jury Duty or for any
other reason, please contact us at 601-825-1480 and report this FRAUD to us. PLEASE DO NOT GET A MONEY CARD AND
GIVE THE NUMBERS OF THE CARD TO ANYONE

It's easy to say 'how can people be so dumb'. But, if you've been a caretaker for an elderly parent or one who is approaching old age and vulnerability, you know that sometimes it just happens.
They are not dumb or stupid. They just want to stay out of trouble and do the right thing and, most of all, their only sin is that they're just too trusting of others. They grew up leaving their doors unlocked at night and they've always trusted others.
Some of us have spent years protecting our elderly folks from being preyed upon. And the largest of rip-offs are actually legal. Those are the hundreds of 'businesses' out there who get folks to donate every month to whatever the cause of the day is, usually veteran related.
I believe in Mississippi, you do not have to serve on a jury after you turn 65. Perhaps some public information on this would help stop this scam.
you don't have to serve at age 65, but you do have to show up and claim your age exemption. those over 65 can serve if they want to, and in my 36 years of jury trials, they generally make the best jurors if healthy and alert.
10:22; Who gets to decide 'healthy and alert'? I've seen lots of jurors under 40 who appear unhealthy and sleep through parts of the trial. They make the best jurors for the defense.
