Update: JPD terminated Williams today.
The Justice Department issued the following press release:
Jackson Police Officer Indicted on Bribery Charges
Jackson, Miss – Jackson Police Officer Melvin Williams was arrested today after a federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment against him for soliciting, demanding and accepting a bribe, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and FBI Special Agent in Charge Donald Alway.
The indictment alleges that from February 2016, to September 2016, Williams solicited, demanded and accepted things of value totaling $5,000 dollars from an unnamed individual intending to be influenced and rewarded. Williams is scheduled for arraignment at 2:30 p.m. today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Ball.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Lemon. If convicted, Williams faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The public is reminded that an indictment is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Is there an honest cop in Jackson?
there are a lot of ill-trained, underpaid cops in Jackson. JPD will make a cop of nearly anyone that's not already a convicted felon.
They have had the same the pay rate for decades, not an excuse.. But $40,000 a year base pay this doesn't happen...
I think starting pay for an officer is much less than 40K. Most officers work their 40 and then another 20 at side jobs to provide for themselves and their family. The city and the county need to raise the level of compensation if they want to attract good officers - and keep them. MS pays the least or almost the least rate of compensation. Its not surprising this happens. The city and the county supervisors all speak of their love and support for law enforcement but it stops there.
Bull Shit! Passing off bad behavior as simply an outcome of low pay is bull shit. Say it with me. Bull Shit!
This ex JPD Officer watched the movie Training Day too many times. Quote from Training Day "Believe it or not, I do try to do some good in the community " Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington).
JPD does have many good officers in the department!
A dishonest cop is a dishonest cop. No matter what they are paid. They will be a dishonest cop if they are paid minimum wage or $200,000 a year. Jackson seems to have an abundance of dishonest cops. Maybe when an honest cop sees how crooked the whole department is it encourages them to commit crimes.
Hell, they cannot even be truthful about the crime stats. How do people expect the cops on the street to be more honest than their leaders?
Why doesn't JPD investigate their own?...$5,000 bribe calls for the FBI?
JPD does not investigate their own as Jackson would soon be without any cops. People have a tendency to forget what crimes JPD have been caught committing.
