The Mississippi Department of Corrections issued the following press release:
After July 1,
the Mississippi Department of Corrections will offer a new program as
an alternative to the Regimented Inmate Discipline program, commonly
known as RID.
The department must end the paramilitary program and replace it with an evidence-based program, based on a state law.
The new program, entitled Recidivism Reduction
Program (RRP), will include Thinking for a Change, a cognitive
behavioral therapy model that has been proven to be effective in
changing criminological thinking patterns. The National Institute
of Corrections created Thinking for a Change.
Since the state law was passed in 2015, MDOC has
been working with the Mississippi Joint Legislative PEER Committee to
develop an adequate program.
“MDOC is one of the state’s pilot agencies for
performance-based budgeting,” Commissioner Marshall Fisher said. “As
such, we are committed to performing our public safety mission operating
as effectively and efficiently as our budget allows.”

RID worked well in its early days. MDOC hired retired military to run the rigid part, and qualified educators to run the education portion. But that fell apart and the program was a joke the last ten years or so. Defendants would opt for actual prison time to avoid RID because of the horrible conditions. The early days were at Parchman, later it was at Walnut Grove.
MDOC has joined other state agencies which receive federal funding in adopting programs with catch initials which will never result in shit. It's been going on for fifty years in various state agencies, now this.
Let's adopt the AED program. Accelerate Execution Dates.
Later at Walnut Grove....hmmmmm
I wonder if any other notable people have connections to Walnut Grove.
RID was a good program. I know someone whose life was turned around by this program after he made a stupid mistake in college. It's too tough for the federal government's taste, however. Now they'll probably get to talk about their feelings.
I'm sure their crimes are all our fault
