Contractor once convicted of bank fraud.
A Madison County contractor was convicted of bank fraud in 2006. The Justice Department charged Chris Creely with one count of bank fraud and alleged that he arranged for fraudulent mortgages of over $300,000. The defendant pleaded guilty in 2007.

Yes, some people still use Instant Messenger but that will change by the end of this year. AOL announced today:
Remembering the Sears building
Yesterday was a sad day for a Jackson landmark, the Eudora Welty Library. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney minced no words and said the building should be condemned. The bricks are falling off of the walls, mortar is crumbling, the second floor is nearly ruined by a leaking roof, and there is raw sewage in the basement. A far cry from when Sears opened the building to much applause on March 21, 1947. However, JJ aims not to mourn the building but memorialize it as it once was. JJ reached back into the archives of the newspaper and posted some of the building's past glory below. Enjoy.

Mississippi True or Mississippi False Flag?
The Mississippi Hospital Association created Mississippi True to get Medicaid managed care contracts. Such contracts are big business as three such contracts worth $2 billion were up for grabs this year . Mississippi True loves to play the homeboy card as it beats its chest and loudly proclaims that the Medicaid money should go to a Mississippi company. There is just one problem: Mississippi True's flag actually belongs on foreign soil.
Commissioner says be ready.
Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney issued the following statement.

Guess who spent more money, had fewer teachers, and got worse results?
JJ's comparison of the Jackson and Desoto County school districts has received no small amount of attention over the last two weeks. The numbers don't lie as JPS was repeatedly found wanting when compared to Desoto County public schools. The Mississippi Department of Education drilled deep and made the same findings back in 2011 yet the study fell into a black hole. Keep reading, this is good information that needs to be a part of the public debate.
Senate confirms Hurst as U.S. Attorney
The Senate confirmed Mike Hurst as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi by voice vote last night. Mr. Hurst will become U.S. Attorney when the President signs the order. Senate report. Senate sources say the order should be signed within seven to ten days. Mr. Hurst was the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi until he resigned in 2015 to run against Jim Hood for Attorney General. Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker issued the following statement:

JPS failed in its attempt to stop the MDE takeover court yesterday. Hinds County Circuit Judge Bill Gowan ruled against JPS's petition for an injunction yesterday. JPS filed the petition for a temporary restraining order on September 23. The case was assigned to Judge Bill Gowan. JPS argued that it should have been given thirty days to respond to a 700 page audit of the district but was given only eight days to respond by MDE. The petition claims that MDE denied the district's right to due process.

Medicaid Melee goes back to court.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Such is the motto of the Mississippi Hospital Association as it tries to get a managed care contract from the Division of Medicaid. MHA lost when the Division awarded $2 billion in contracts for the MississippiCan program earlier this year. It lost again when it asked a Chancellor to block the contracts. It suffered another setback when the Contract Review Board didn't reject the contracts. However, MHA's managed care company, Mississippi True, sued the Division of Medicaid in Hinds County Circuit Court last Thursday in an attempt to force the Division to award it the coveted Medicaid managed care contract.

Classy!
The Mississippi Department of Education paid over $214,000 to a community activist in Memphis in 2015 yet can't seem to locate a contract for the payments. Joseph Kyles was also arrested recently for allegedly beating his girlfriend because she would not get an abortion. The Clarion-Ledger reported:
Bill Crawford: So much for budget hearings.
The Legislature’s quickie budget hearings produced few surprises last week. Schools, colleges, and universities, as usual, asked for lots more money while legislators, as usual, focused on holding down spending.

State Senator going to Court of Appeals
Governor Phil Bryant issued the following statement.
JPS is just plain fat.
JJ compared the staffing of Jackson Public Schools District to the Desoto County School District. There is no other way to describe the analysis: JPS is bloated. JPS has 941 more employees despite having 6,589 fewer students. JJ obtained more information from Desoto and also included the Rankin County School District in the comparison. The story gets even worse.

State Auditor busts MDE for sweetheart deals
State Auditor Stacey Pickering blasted the Mississippi Department of Education for awarding contracts while trying to get around public purchasing laws in a report. +. In other words, the State Auditor accused the Superintendent of repeatedly giving sweetheart deals to her friends while the Board sat back and watched. Payments were made for hundreds of thousands of dollars with no documentation while numerous contracts were structured to avoid bidding and any review by outside parties.

Yet another group of owners of a Mugshots franchise have sued fellow Mugshots owner Chris McDonald and several companies he owns, in federal court for alleged fraud and Rico violations. Chad Eron, Jim Walsh, Patrick Johnson, Stephen Arant, and Alex Pitt accused McDonald of borrowing nearly $1 million against their three Mugshots restaurants in Alabama without their knowledge and paying bogus invoices to Mr. McDonald-owned companies. The owner of the Ridgeland Mugshots filed a similar lawsuit in April. Earlier post.

Does Jackson pay too much for lobbying?
Jackson Mayor Chowke Lumumba asked the Jackson City Council to hire Octagon Group for lobbying services last night. Quincy Mukoro is the owner of Octagon. The current lobbyist is Worth Thomas. The request submitted to the City Council set the maximum compensation for Octagon at $135,000. The term of the contract would be one year. However, Jackson pays much more money than do other cities and counties in Mississippi for lobbying services. Check out what municipal and county lobbyists made in 2016:

Wrong-way driver indicted for manslaughter
A Madison County grand jury indicted Leronnie Michael in June for Culpable Negligence Manslaughter in the death of Jackson Busby. Madison Police arrested Michael on December 22, 2016 after he allegedly drove the wrong way on I-55 N and struck another car in a head-on collision. Madison Police stated in a press release at the time of the wreck:

The sexual harassment lawsuit against Belhaven University started out with much sound in the media but was ended by the fury of the judge. Unfortunately, the same media that engage in a hi-tech lynching of Belhaven and its employee when attorney Carlos Moore and his client, Erica Stewart, filed the lawsuit couldn't bother to report that the Judge threw out the case, sanctioned the Mr. Moore, fined Ms. Stewart, and said she destroyed evidence.

Trollfest '09
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both will entitle you to free drinks.Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required, just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '07 is for EVERYONE!!!
