Some people quit. Some people complain. Some people are just plain lazy and don't give a damn about themselves or anyone else. Some people, however, are special and want to better themselves and the people around them. Such a person was William Holtzclaw, the founder of the Utica Institute that is now the Utica campus of Hinds Community College. Mississippi was not friendly to someone who was broke and black back in 1902 but William Holtzclaw wanted to educate black Mississippians. The Vicksburg Sunday Post told his story in a 1973 article that is posted below. It is a positive story that is not told enough and easy to forget.

Take the Rick Cleveland Quiz
Brett Lorenzo Favre brings to nine the number of native Mississippians inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That the Magnolia State ranks No. 1 per capita in producing Hall of Famers will not surprise anyone who regularly reads this column.
We may rank low in per capita income, lean body mass, and education, but we can play ball. Boy, can we play football.
Uber is now legit
The Jackson City Council voted to allow Uber to operate in Jackson under light regulation. The motion passed on a 3-1 vote. Councilmen Ashby Foote, Melvin Priester, Jr., and Tyrone Hendrix voted for the measure while DeKeither Stamps voted against it. The cabbies showed up to protest against Uber while WLBT gave them a full hearing and completely slanted its coverage against Uber. Watch the video below:

It appears a news online website is getting cranked up in the Jackson area. Mississippi News & Information Corporation stole R.L. Knave away from the Jackson Free Press. Its mission statement says:

Ashby Foote tells the rest of the story about the Jackson International Airport
In 87 years of operations, Jackson’s airports have never suffered a hijacking, but that streak may be about to end. The state legislature is considering a bill that would create a new airport board appointed by the governor. If passed it would effectively take control of the Jackson International Airport (JAN) away from the current Airport Commission which is appointed by the mayor of Jackson and confirmed by the Jackson City Council.
Wood Brown passed away

Looking for a movie to watch online today? Don't feel like watching football but don't can't bear to click the remote until the Lifetime channel pops up on the screen? Check out Narco Cultura, a movie about the Narco culture in America and south of the border in Juarez. Corridos praise the drug lords in ways that remind one of Mafia worship while the police in Juarez are forced to wear masks and go into hiding. The movie is on Netflix but a Youtube version is embedded below. Filmmaker Shaul Schwarz produced the movie. Several law enforcement officials recommended the movie to JJ and said Narco Cultura and Cartel Land were the two most realistic films in documenting the drug culture.

Building the Jackson airport
It is time to take one more step into the Jackson municipal airport past. Newspaper articles from the late 1950's show the efforts made by the city of Jackson to build a new airport. The articles show how city fathers strove mightily to bring a "jet-age" airport to Jackson and find a way to pay for it without breaking the bank. It was a time of excitement and anticipation for Jackson as the project to build the reservoir was underway as well. There were heroes and villains but in the end, progress was made. Some highlights of the articles are:

Harkins files bill to create new board for Jackson airport
Let's get ready to ruuuuummmble over the Jackson airport. State Senator Josh Harkins (R-Gold Coast) submitted his bill to create a new governing board for the Jackson municipal airport. This is one fight that will get nasty and vicious as Jackson fights any attempts to change how the airport operates. There will be casualties. Medics will be in short supply. Most bourbon will be consumed. Kenneth Stokes may die of dehydration.
The bill replaces the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority with a Metropolitan Airport Authority to manage the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport and Hawkins Field on July 1, 2016. A nine-member board of commissioners will oversee the operation of the two airports. The new board of commissioners will be comprised of the following members::
MDE to Pickering: HELP!!!
It appears the Hattiesburg School District is going broke or more likely, is already broke. Mississippi Superintendent of Education Carey Wright asked State Auditor Stacey Pickering to immediately investigate the district's finances. The general fund balance plummeted from $6.5 million in 2012 to $768,796 in 2015. The district also obtained a $7 million tax anticipation note in August 2015. The district has already spent $6 million. The HSD Superintendent and business manager resigned in December. Dr. Wright sent this letter to Mr. Pickering:

Senators try to revive MDA zombie
Check out part of SB #2074 filed by State Senators Lydia Chassaniol and Joey Fillingane:
Diamond Harris pleads guilty
Diamond Harris pleaded guilty to four charges in Flowood Municipal Court in December. The 21 year-old black female was arrested by Flowood police in August after she refused to provide her license during a traffic stop, attempted to drive away from police, and then struggled when police tried to remove her from the car. Harris recorded part of the incident and gave the video to WAPT. JJ obtained the police reports and convictions through a public records request. Readers may remember this video broadcast on WAPT:
File Jackson public records requests online.
Jackson made a major step for transparency in government. The city website now has a portal for submitting public records requests. Simply go to the portal, fill out the information in the online form, and submit your request. JJ submitted one last week. The clerk's office received the request and obtained the records. Hopefully more local governments will follow Jackson's lead. Then there is MDA but that is a story for another day. Go to City Clerk's web page.

Trollfest '09
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.
If you get tired come relax at the Fox News Tent. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both will entitle you to free drinks.Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required, just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '07 is for EVERYONE!!!
