Rankin County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff sentenced Todd Mardis to serve 20 years in prison but suspended three years of the sentence. Mardis brutally beat his wife in October 2022. She suffered a broken ankle, broken ribs, lacerated liver, broken wrist, and heavy bruising.
Flowood police arrested Mardis for aggravated domestic violence on October 7, 2022 after he allegedly beat his wife on October 4. Mrs. Mardis suffered a lacerated liver, fractured wrist, fractured cheekbone, fractured ankle, two broken ribs, strangulation marks, widespread bruising, and patches of hair torn completely from her scalp. A home security camera showed him dragging an unconscious Kim Mardis by her hair across the driveway and through the flower beds into the home. He did not take her to the hospital that night but instead flew to Tampa with another woman the next morning. He was arrested at the Jackson airport when he returned.
The District Attorney as well as law enforcement sources said it was the worst domestic violence case they had ever seen.
Rankin County Court Judge David Morrow set his bond at $750,000 and issued a no-contact order between Todd Mardis and his wife. Judge Morrow revoked the his bond in April after Mardis violated the no-contact order. A Madison County deputy testified he saw the couple dining together at a Flora restaurant. Recorded phone calls at the Rankin County jail showed Mardis passing messages to his wife through their daughter.
Mardis sat in jail until October when Judge Ratcliff held a hearing on various motions, filed by Mardis, including a motion to suppress the security camera video of the beating. After 2 1/2 hours, Judge Ratcliff called the lawyers to the bench and made it quite clear to Collette he was going to allow the video to be presented as evidence. He urged the lawyer to avoid going to trial.
Collette and his client conferred for over half an hour. The two men walked straight to the podium when they returned to the courtroom. Mardis announced he was pleading guilty. Judge Ratcliff accepted his plea and set sentencing for January.

Todd Mardis enters the courtroom. |
Clad in a green and white jumpsuit, the shackled Mardis stood beside his attorney as he prepared to learn his fate. After the proceedings began, Judge Ratcliff allowed Kim Mardis to make a statement to the Court.
The victim urged leniency for her attacker. "I love him. I want him home, I wanted him home a year ago. We need him. He is a part of who we are. I know that y'all are aware I spent time with him when he was out on bond. That was my choice. I wanted to be with him. I missed him. I feel guilty about doing that because that's what got him back here (bond revocation.). We have sent numerous letters to show his character. He is an amazing man, an amazing father, an amazing businessman, an incredible giver to others. We don't want him to be in prison. I understand there are laws and things that deal with this," said the wife of Todd Mardis but she was not through standing by her man.
"I was with him for three months while he was out on numerous occasions. He was loving, kind, we did devotions in the morning. He was remorseful for his behavior. The picture you see is the man we know. I've been with this man for 35 years. It's not him. Look Todd (She addressed her husband), look at how all showed up for you today," said Kim Mardis as she pointed out uncles, employees, children, grandchildren, and friends before making one last plea for her husband.
Kim said "He is not what people (gesturing towards me and the other media) portray him as. We all make mistakes. We F up all the time. I'm sorry, I didn't say the word but we do," The family members giggled." The statement ended with a plea for something reasonable.
No other friends or family spoke up for the defendant although they submitted 18 letters to the Court.
After 18 months of being the subject of so much controversy, Todd Mardis finally spoke as he stood before justice:
I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry. (His voice breaking)I love my wife. I love my family. There is no excuse. I want to be with my family, nothing like this will ever happen again. I’ve made changes, a lot. I’ve owned it. I wish I’d done things different. I understand the courts have to punish me and I dserve punishment. I don’t want a get out of jail free card, I’m not going to do it again. I’ve embarrassed my kids, my daughetrs who have husbands, my sons who have future wives, who wonder if they have a genetic thing they will do it because their dad did it. Spiritually, judge I got lost. Laying in a cell for 10 months helps you realign yourself. I don't have no excuses. That's all I got.
Assistant District Attorney Scott Rogillo addressed the Court as he took issue with Mardis's show of remorse. He asked when Mardis discovered remorse. "When, When was the epiphany on remorse? Was it right after he committed the crime? No, when he went to Florida? No. Was it when she was in the hospital? Was it when he broke the order? Was it when he fought to keep the video out?" asked the prosecutor. The doubting Rogillo said the only time Mardis showed remorse was when he pleaded guilty.
Judge Ratcliff heard it all as he paused to reflect on the decision he would soon make. Speaking deliberately to the courtroom, he said "I have reviewed the evidence. I have reviewed the video. I reviewed the video for close to ten minutes. I've seen Mr. Mardis viciously beat his wife, I've seen him slap, choke, kick, and throw her to the ground. Mrs. Mardis was nude by the end of the video because the clothes had been beaten off of her. "
The judge continued: "There was no video of the trip to the house but it appears she was totally unconscious when Mardis pulled her from the truck. It goes without saying it's not your fault you're not here on a murder charge, it's that egregious. She had a broken cheekbone, broken ribs, broken ankle, lacerated liver, and extensive bruising all over her body." He noted her injuries were so bad that St. Dominic Hospital transferred her to a trauma level unit at UMMC for better treatment.
Pronouncing judgement on Todd Mardis, Judge Ratcliff ordered him to serve 20 years in prison but suspended three years of the sentence. He will serve a probation term of five years upon release. He will be eligible for early release or parole after serving 50% of the 17-year prison sentence.

Did i hear that right? That sentence is an absolute joke.
This lady is whack
17 years is a joke? I mean put him under the jail for all i care but that's a lot of time...
What did you hear ?
He can serve 50% of the 20 years, or 50% of the 17 years?
Why in the hell is this a 50% crime? Most crimes of violence are not 50%! The Legislature needs to fix this immediately!
Wish he had to serve complete time without possible good behavior time off. But who is to say he will be a model inmate.
Well deserved for what he did. Its even more reasonable based upon the minimization of domestic violence by so many which shows that a sentence that sends a message to the community is clearly needed.
@1:17 -- you understand 20 is the max for that crime, right?
He'll be out in 5
not enough
POS should’ve gotten life.
The judge saying that Mardis was lucky not to be there on a murder charge speaks to the severity of the crime.
He deserves it.
He plead guilty.
He IS guilty.
He rolled the dice with his actions and thus he pays what the judge says he's due.
Holy smokes! That's a sentence to send a message.
Are roids available in the pen?
Judge Steve Ratfink will never get a vote from me again…. What a joke!!!
He nearly killed the woman he loved.
I'd hate to see what he does to the women he hates.
Such an absolute garbage human.
Wonder if he will actually learn that he cannot just keep beating the hell out of anyone he wants.
1:17 & 1:55 It's about accountability and if it were your daughter I'll bet you'd have a different opinion!
He's going to Parchman. He may not last the full 8.5 (half of 17).
He'll be eligible for early release only if he behaves himself. And I don't think he's capable of that - not given his predilection for bullying and violence.
In any case, this was a very satisfactory outcome.
What exactly did Collete do? A public defender could have gotten him that sentence for free.
Is he going State Prison? If so, that you would humble him, if he hasn't been humbled already. He was put in this situation by God, for that reason I believe.
This a fair. He may still be productive if he is released. She is safe.
Prayers for everyone involved.
He must serve 50% of the 17 years. 8 1/2 years is still a long time. Hopefully his wife will move on.
So basically, he will serve about 9 years. Hopefully she will move along and be long gone by the time he resurfaces.
He walked like he had just received a severe gut punch.
50% is a joke we all know! I pray for this controlled wife, he has warped her brain into worshipping him! She has to get the devil off her back and thank the Good Lord she is alive today. He gave her another chance in life taking a new direction. If you read this Kim, walk on with your life, forget him. He’s the past, sure not first time you were used as punching bag and rest assure when he’s let out of the cage he will be more of an animal! Turn your life over, praising God each extra day you have!
Do the crime, Do the time! No judge, jury or anyone of us
can judge or convict this son of GOD. Only GOD our father
can. Let’s all learn from this horrible act and his way of acting
where we can ourselves and leaders of young men become better
citizens. One’s that look to help others, not thinking about
ourselves.
I hope all you assholes are happy with this. Todd’s family is absolutely devastated but that’s not enough for all you cowards crying for more time. What the hell else do you want at this point? Their family is in tatters and will continue to suffer but you self righteous punks get on here and want maximum devastation on this family that none of yall even know. I promise you Kim and the kids are not doing ok but none of you care about them. Many of you claim to be Christians and yall make me absolutely sick. I hope god judges y’all as harshly and you want to judge Todd. All a bunch of keyboard warriors that jealous of this man and his family and yall enjoy watching the life and business they buillt get torn down. Disgusting and disgraceful!!!! I hope you all get to stand before god one day and get your judgement, sick people!!!
All Todd needs to do is keep repeating the magic words his wife told the judge:
If Mardis tries really hard while he is in prison can he get those three years suspended added back to his sentence?
She stated they were all a part of him that is freaking stupid ! She is a very sick woman! As well as his entire family for standing by him ! I hope they ALL get help they are ALL a danger to society !
Seems mandatory: Bad Boys (Theme from Cops) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q3dGZPguSM
Watch for release at end of Tater’s term- Rankin County folks stick by their own!
@2:59pm - So we’re all sick people because we want this POS wife beater to go to jail for a long time for almost killing his wife? What the hell is wrong with YOU? Sounds like you’re the only sick person here if you think he deserves any kind of forgiveness from us or the justice system.
FO
@2:59.....wah
How many prison bologna sandwiches are there in a twenty year sentence when three years are suspended? SHOW YOUR WORK!
He is “ELIGIBLE” for parole at 50%. THIS DOES NOT MEAN RELEASED. In fact if you look at the parole decisions since Belk was appointed Chairman 3 out of 4 parole requests, even for non violent first offenders, are being denied.
2:59 Heather Spencer loved George Bell too & it cost her life. No one is thinking of themselves but it is beyond reasonable to believe Todd would not harm others. George Bell too was in a treatment facility but came home & murdered Heather. As for Collette, I am glad taxpayers are not paying for him. Tough Love hurts but we must have consequences for breaking the law. Law Enforcement does not get a choice in responding to DV calls, even when family has been ordered to not contact. Thank you to the Judge & all who testified on behalf of the public. Prayers for Mardis family.
Dad beats the everliving shit out of mom, and the son sides with his roid head excuse of a semen donator. If you thought this family was jacked up now, check back in just before the 50% kicks in and you'll see untold levels of jackassery. Plausibly a repeat of learned behavior.
@2:59 it appears that the law applies to Mardis just like it applies to Trump and the rest of us. I didn't arrest him, I didn't prosecute him, and I didn't sentence him. So keep your self righteous bullshit to yourself.
I don't know the man, but from the way his fanboys post here, he likes it rough, tough, and hard to handle. Well, he's going to where there's plenty of that. I'm sure they will be happy to oblige.
Mary Jane Murphy Lemon and Kim Overstreet Mardis grew up together in Millcreek Subdivision at the Reservoir. We were all neighbors as children.
I wonder what Todd thought when he found out MaryJane also graduated HS with his brother-in-law? I bet he felt nauseated. Kinda like he probably feels now.
Kim, we are all praying for you and your family
@2:59 00 for one thing, it is God, not god. And, not one poster on this blog did anything to hurt his kids and family. It is ALL on him, bro! He chose that path, he took that path, and now he gets the ramifications of that path! Justice served!! Kim and the kids, in due time, will realize the monster he was and how much better off they will be without him. The deserve much better than anything that creep gave them!!
I certainly feel for anyone who’s been damaged in this incident. As far as the sentence goes, the judge seems to have not pleased many, so he’s probably on the right track. I’m sure Mr. Mardis will serve more years than had he been convicted in Hinds County.
God bless his family.
Interesting perspectives
The misogynists are out in force today.
Women, you may believe you have a perfect husband. I may as I'm are older than the age of "usually dead" for women, but I remember when a wife was aka the husband's property.
What is it you missed my " ladies" that you are merely " window dressing" in today's GOP?
@2:59 I'm a Christian. I grieve for what Todd has put his family through. I pray for the wife he attempted to murder. And I forgive Todd. I pray he changes as a man. I forgive him. We should all forgive him. But I also understand that in a civilized society, criminals must serve the fair sentence that their crime deserves. And it's not un-Christian to believe that. So while I forgive Todd (as we all should), that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be punished for a such a sick and violent crime against another human.
It appears that the Mardis butt puppets are sad today.
2:59- what part of the sentence was incorrect based on the accused actions and plea?
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Colossians 3:19
If dude serves 8 1/2 in prison that will be a pretty hard time. That's long enough to get used to prison life.
@ 2:59 QQ. Nobody tore down his "life and business" but himself--you know, when he beat his wife's clothes off her body. Yes, I'm certain the family is devastated. I'm sure his kids are devastated that their father is a POS and that their mother was almost killed. Mardis deserves much more than he got. Take your BS somewhere else.
PS: "Judgment"
Glad to see some justice served. 50% is a joke, but at least he is getting enough time to let his kids and family see what life is like without a chronic asshole there to berate them constantly. Hopefully they can find peace and healing. Jail won’t be any fun for Todd, he’s about to find out he isn’t as tough as he feels around women and children.
Thank you, 2:34. I was just about to tell this bunch of barnyard yahoos that according to today's math, half of 17 is 8.5. How these nabobs come up with 'out in five' and 20 isn't enough tells me they're all JPS scholars.
And 8.5 is not automatic. That's his parole eligibility date.
@4:43-
It's not really a bad thing that so many commenters here do not know how to cipher the judge's sentence into the range of time Mardis the convict could serve depending on all the possible deductions and enhancements.
He is a repeat abusive bully, over and over...and worse, he seems to really seek out weaker opponents.
I feel certain he will locate some worthy adversaries soon.
I just want to know if he has thought about what tattoo he’s gonna get on his neck and forehead? Probably something really cool though. I can’t wait to see it. You Collette is laughing his ass off, all the way to the bank. I bet Collette would give Todd a discount if he Tattooed an advertisement on his face. Na. Collette will need the cash to buy another Armani Suit.
I know someone who is in prison and he was a “badass” around Jackson in the 80’s and 90’s. That was until he got to prison. They broke him. I know Mardis too. He’s not going to fare well. There is always someone tougher. To the guy that says no one would stand up to him if beside him, you’ve been duped. I have and he did nothing but I also weigh 225 lbs. He picks on people… bullies them. He’s a narcissist in love with himself. I hope the two disposable razors he’ll get each month are enough to keep his chest and arms shaved. You know…so his muscles will stand out.
Thank you, Judge Ratcliff, for being a good man and a thoughtful jurist. Thank you, prosecutors, for sticking to your guns and forcing this result. Thank you, Rankin County law enforcement for handling the investigation well, for carrying out your duties effectively and for withstanding the pressure you were under. So many folks to thank here.
Lots of tough guys on here cheering Todd’s sentence. Knowing damn well yall wouldn’t say shit if he was standing next to you.
And kingfish, I’m not sure why you’ve got such a hard-on for Todd. This shit happens all time, not saying it’s ok but it’s funny what stories you jump on. He must have hurt you feelings at one point.
5:31
So you know that I am a stupid redneck that won’t back down ? Tell me how you got this crystal ball power !?
He’s already served a year so that comes off his sentence….aggravated domestic cases daily but everyone’s only interested in this one
5:31pm
No we wouldn't say jack shit to Sardis'face, he's a rabid, blood thirsty pit bull who beat his wife relentlessly, he's a problem for the law.
When he is processed he want need dye for his hair it will b shaved… lucky the goon squad wasn’t there
@4:08…wtf?
2:59. I believe you’re the jealous one! I don’t care one bit about how great he and his family are. If they can’t move on with life without him then he wasn’t much of a husband/father.
Trauma bonding is a complex psychological process in which a person forms a deep emotional attachment to their abuser. It is often characterized by a cycle of abuse and positive reinforcement, which can make it difficult for the victim to leave the relationship. Google "Narcissistic Family Traits" and you will see this family is the epitome of the definition.
@2:59
No one destroyed anything but Todd, himself. From South Jackson, to Prep, to his adult life, he’s been nothing more than a bully who lashes out like a child when he doesn’t get his way. He’s escaped charges on more assaults than you can count on two hands and, per his daughter’s phone conversation with him as Kim fought for her life, he was well-familiar with laying hands on his wife.
As to the night Todd ruined his and his family’s life, he:
1. Dragged his tiny wife out of a restaurant by force.
2. Beat her unconscious on the ride home.
3. Continued to beat her on the surface of his driveway, leaving her naked and with injuries you see in high-speed car wrecks.
4. Left her for dead in the driveway.
5. Colluded with his brother to hide/destroy evidence, then left the scene.
6. Fled the state with another woman without ever checking (in person) on his wife he nearly killed.
7. Violated the no-contact order almost immediately upon his initial release, showing his perpetual arrogance and entitlement.
I miss anything?? Any “misunderstandings” the judge and DA may have overlooked that would have sprung your idol Todd?
The “business” he destroyed was nothing but a fraud. Advising greedy and dumb clients on parking money in offshore micro-captive insurance scams and deducting personal vacations and non-existent “marketing” expenses isn’t a business. It’s a fraud, just like ole Todd turned out to be. It’s incredible he made it as long as he did without the IRS, Secretary of State, or MS Bar taking him down.
Todd, per the judge, is very lucky he wasn’t facing Attempted Murder charges. He didn’t get what he deserved, but it’s a start.
The fact that you capitalized Todd, but failed to capitalize God, says all we need to know about your priorities.
Ive known Todd since kindergarten. This is beyond sad. His actions spoke far louder than his words. I feel for everyone involved. It was hard to not notice that Kim's parents were not in attendance but they may have passed. I don't know. I hope something positive will come from this. A gofund me page for his family would be a great start. I'm just saddened and hopeful. I wish the Mardis family the best.
I’m sure Todd’s rough and tumble days at Jackson Preparatory Academy prepared him well for surviving Parchman. You dumb effers that think Todd is tough crack me up.
At 4:08 - "I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it."
I served time in Central Ms and finished in Greene County. Those who say he got off light, have never been "in".
He nearly beat his wife to death and he deserves to serve the entire sentence. Kim girl, you’re lucky to be alive, don’t excuse what he did to you. It’s time to move on without him.
4:08 PM (1st one) stated (or asked): “you are merely " window dressing" in today's GOP?”
4:08 PM surely gets the D A comment award. Typical woke leftist Democrat commenter that likely gets triggered when they hear the song “Baby It’s cold Outside”
but has no problem with Rap singers like Cardi B’s “Wet A__ P___y ” song. Woke leftist Democrats, too indoctrinated to know which is the REAL misogynistic party.
To hell with you kingfish and all your punk followers. Karma’s gonna bite all yall in the ass soon enough im sure.
Todd is probably watching the Ole Miss basketball coach on TV and thinking “life isn’t fair”. Some folks get off I guess.
While not perfect, this sentence will at least give ol' Todd plenty of options when it comes to fighting.
@7:32 "a Go-Fund me page"? You've got to be kidding? Apparently you don't know how much money the Mardis family has. Trust me they don't need a Go-Fund me page.
He got the maximum sentence with mandatory 50% to serve. The sad part is how sick his wife is. She has no clue how lucky she is to be alive. She needs help, some serious counseling and rehab, perhaps. She speaks like a true addict. I hope parchman gives him what he needs. Prayers for his children.
Two words: Heather Spencer
@7:31 point on ... nuff said
@3:51 what does this mean?
He may get out in half the time, but it his buddies definitely got a life sentence of being butt hurt about it
Why did he do this? What triggered the outrage.
Kingfish,
We appreciate your coverage of this significant case. I thought it damn decent of you to turn the camera away when the victim was speaking.
There is no way she can convince me that this was the first time he'a abused her. No way! Sweetie, he will kill you next time. That is not love. Get counseling for you and your children, and get STRONG. I will be praying for you.
Sick (ill) family, both Todd and Kim had almost a year to prepare their speech of mercy! They both sounded like 2 people that knew their roller coaster ride has come to an end. Neither ask for mercy, they both spoke more of why they are where they are in their 35 years of marriage. A little more carnage and we would have a documentary!
This is tough. Hearing the wife plead for him was tough.
Todd Mardis did this, all by himself, with no help from KF or anyone else commenting on this blog. The End.
Steve Ratliff is a total joke.
Hope he does not have a daughter who gets beat up.
Just heartbroken that the judge threw the book at Todd. Before he was arrested again for being with Kim, he was in prayer every day about what he had done. He truly was sorry. I guess forgiveness is something not afforded to everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mardis family.
His “business”. 😂 Every legitimate financial planner in the Southeast advised their clients to stay away from that shady scheme. There are no irs letters, precedent, or any kind of standing for it to hold up in court. He’s playing with other people’s money and well being. His “business” was just like his life… a big scam.
If this was a tattooed redneck or random black man I think most people would nod their heads in agreement with the sentence. Wealth and status are irrelevant.
I hope she has a plan for when he gets out. Because he will probably try to finish the job someday.
Forgiveness has nothing to do with law and order and sentencing. Civilized society needs to protect its citizens.
Why turn the camera away when she was speaking? If we're to hear, view and read a sufficiency of the information to make up our individual minds, why censor part of that ability?
Judge said no use of cameras when victim or witnesses (family members) were testifying. We could use audio recording only. Be thankful. In the guilty plea hearing, recording whatsoever was not allowed. Just stills.
2:59, if your daughter were beaten and left for dead, what would you say the appropriate sentence would be? Would you still be saying 8.5 to 17 is too harsh?
I have known Todd for a long time. Kim doing what she can to try and hold her family together. But let me be clear, Todd has brainwashed his wife and kids. For his daughter to utter the words " I know she probably deserved it, but holy shit dad" is a sign that he has made them think that its ok. That's a typical response from a narcissist controlled family. The entire family has been victimized by Todd. Kingfish, not sure why you chose to single out this family like the rest of the media rabid dogs when this happens daily in Hinds county and nobody gives a shit, but thank you for not turning the camera on Kim. Todd needs prison, his family needs therapy, all of them.
Judge was right, not by his own fault is he not here for a murder charge. How she can defend him is unimaginable. Only by grace of God that she did not die. Both are lucky in that aspect.
This case is eerily similar to the Stuart Irby/Karen Irby saga. We all know how that ended. Kim, I know the situation you have lived in for years…. The walking on egg shells. He has been abusive your entire marriage. If he were to be out of prison and back home it would be great for a while until the cycle of abuse started. The difference this time would be the fact he would probably kill you. He has been knocked off his pedestal, humiliated , lost his power and all of his anger would be taken out on you and you know it. It’s a cycle… narcissist take their anger out on the person they have complete control over….
This is your chance to cut all ties while you are safe… heal yourself and your family
Who determines the prison location where Mardis goes? Mississippi has several locations. Long distance away from Rankin County would be my choice I could decide.
I will say the same about Todd Mardis as I will say about Rudy Warnock when he finally goes to jail. Todd isn't getting punished for 90% of what he has done. He might be getting punished harshly for this particular assault. But there are plenty of other assaults against Kim, and others, that he will never face judgement for. So he's getting less time than he deserves.
One would think with the number of family members at the hearing that just maybe one of them could convince Kim and the kids that they need help! He is gone for a long time and they have time to heal! Hopefully other abusers get the message, look their ass up!
@6:46 - Neither a judge nor a court of law 'grants forgiveness'. That's the Lord's purview. I might can forgive 'you' for something you did to me. But I can't grant you forgiveness for something you do to others.
TIp for the "Todd-lers"...the name I am giving his merry band of roid-head supporters.
When yall go visit your god (lower case) in jail, be sure to not wear your bedazzled jeans. They make the metal detector go crazy.
I pray someone, anyone, gets through to the wife and kids before its too late.
-he gets out and kills them
-kids think this is normal and abuse their spouse and kids.
Wondering if Tate will pardon him at the end of his term in four years (i.e. a "Haley" pardon).
Being Christian does not mean letting someone be unaccountable for his actions. I am proud of him for praying and reading devotions. This may be a good thing for him and his family. Had he been following God closely, this wouldn’t have happened. He has a chance now to truly change his life and become a Christian. His family is like other families that have a member found guilty of a heinous crime. All families deserve help. Not just the Mardises. May God have mercy on his soul and teach his children a new way to live.
8:39 location doesn’t matter MDOC is awful. For his family, visitation is brutal. For their sakes I hope it works for them! Ranking County jail is not Department of Corrections, it’s a new game and only big boys play in the MDOC games. He will be in open population after getting processed in the system. Everyman for himself!!
This is a tragedy all the way around - and even more tragic that it probably goes on unaddressed in most cases. The only reason justice was served is because of the security camera footage that captured a tortuous relationship on just one particular occasion. Without it, the matter would have been swept under the rug like so many times before.
Listening to the victim's plea for leniency was surreal - she is not well...
"not sure why you chose to single out this family like the rest of the media rabid dogs when this happens daily in Hinds county and nobody gives a shit"
It's because we're all racists, right? Isn't that always the "correct" answer?
All this talk about forgiveness, I do hope we all forgive Todd, I hope his wife and kids forgive Todd, and I hope the judge forgives Todd. But forgiveness doesn't mean he shouldn't serve the appropriate punishment for his crime. His wife can forgive him and still refuse to take him back. I hope Todd serves every single day in prison that he deserves. Then when released, I hope he goes and does great things in this world. I hope he changes his ways. I hope his wife and family heal.
I don't wish ill will on Todd. But I think he 100% deserves, and should serve, the appropriate punishment. Judge Ratliff can sentence him to the appropriate punishment, and forgive him as a human at the same time.
Too many posters, here, are projecting their own personal issues and obsessions into this case.
"The kids" are grown. And frankly, kids, these days, are more the products of daycare/Pre-K/K/schools/colleges/sports teams/screens(computer & phone), than they are products of their families. Once they're old enough to dress themselves, kids' lives are consumed by homework and sports. (oh, and whatever time demands are made by church involvement)
Based on socioeconomically-similar families I've observed, I'm guessing there was never much "Kim and the kids". The kids' identities were certainly shaped by the parents, in that the kids' social status/physiognomy/life-prospects were determined by prenatal nutrition, Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance, early-life nutrition, and the level of daycare/schooling/clothing/sports-support/automobiles/status-determining vacations the parents PAID FOR.
It looks like the parents, in this case, did an above-par job of paying for and arranging everything that is expected of parents, these days. Today, though, it cannot be assumed that kids have much emotional investment in their parents.
So, please stop seeing Mardis' wife and kids as being huddled in a corner, whimpering as the giant "dad" menaces them. Maybe in YOUR family... Certainly in what passed as "families" in the backwoods hellhole where I grew up... But these were functioning as Upper Middle Class Whites, living within a passably-posh world of Rich Rankin County White Trash: expensive subdivisions, private schools, status autos - all the expensive lessons and teams and sports/hunting gear deemed requisite.
All the silly "healing" and blame talk, distracts from usable insight which is to be gleaned from this case. Mardis seems to have lost his mind, for a while (hence, the brutal beating). WHY did he lose his mind? Dissecting the substances in-play at the moment of the beating (including sugar and other carbs ingested at dinner), along with a trajectory of possible cognitive degeneration, would be more valuable than is using this ugly story as an excuse for reciting all the NOBLE LANGUAGE you've been itching to recite.
10:53am- agree.
Forgiveness does not mean there are no consequences for the person at fault.
Somebody needs to expand their vocabulary beyond the word "joke."
Once they figure out he has money and he's in there for beating a woman, I'm sure he'll be really popular in prison
I was at Prep with Todd and he was always a bully. And there are consequences for our actions. He can and will be forgiven by those that matter, including God but he does belong in prison right now. That said, I listened to Kim’s pleas. I am horrified that she has become so brainwashed to this life of abuse. She is in desperate need of therapy and assistance in breaking this cycle. To hear the words from her daughter re: previous abuse is sickening. Kim, what are you thinking???!!! You need to find some help for you and your precious family. You need to be strong and teach all those sweet girls in your life to stand tall, fight, be strong, and not be a victim! Choose them, Kim! Not Todd! You can’t have both and live a healthy life.
I'm targeting the Mardis family?
Like I targeted the Alstons? Like I targeted the Bells? Like I targeted the Clarks? Guess you missed the Derrick Coleman case I've been covering.
This website has covered the issue of domestic violence for years and as always, someone comes on claiming I'm targeting the perp. I would've covered it if he were black.
Reason I find out about most of these cases is the victim or victim's friends or family contact me. In other words, I get tips. You want me to cover the poor black cases instead of the rich white ones, then tip me off to them.
11:09 morphed itself into a Noble Language using redneck, identical to what it was complaining about. Todd Mardis is confined away from civility and that’s what matters to me. His son-in-law seems to be a fairly respectable person and probably gonna have to move his veterinary services to another State because of all of this. Hopefully, he’s been able to show his wife (Todd’s daughter) the respect she deserves. The kids were never on trial and the unfortunate display of their private lives, was unfairly opened by Todd’s strange addictions. They will survive.
Can’t believe that woman that he travelled to Florida with came to court! The nerve! Fish won’t let me say her name. If only her husband knew the details of that trip!
1 year or 20, what is the difference. Rogillio is right, jail affects an entire family. That’s why that punishment is outdated. 40 days of electro shock therapy followed by a weekly ass whipping would do more justice to the criminal than to the families. Time for changes.
It amazes me how everyone is to blame that created this tragic event except Todd? He “f’ed” up and is laying the crime. Someone bears the close off my daughter or sister I will be in jail! For the family members and co workers that are their shame on you. Find a new source of income!!
Only winner here is Colette lol, hope he milked Mardis for some nice fees.
I still feel every punch that was doled out at my childhood home. But, the physical violence pales in comparison to pain, fear, confusion, etc of the psychological violence. Judge and prosecutors did their job. This family got a gift in removing this negative and dangerous force from their lives while they untangle and repair the damage. Such a sad and utterly pathetic situation.
@11:09 AM. You are posting your opinion. Good for you. Just like everyone else here who has posted their opinion. Sure does seem to be alot of anger at us posting comments.
To hear the judge describe the video evidence and pronounce that it’s a wonder Mr. Mardis wasn’t before him on a murder charge comes as no surprise whatsoever. It’s just another rung up the ladder of “this was worse than anyone could ever imagine.” I have zero connection to the Mardis family, have never met nor laid eyes on a single one of them. I don’t even know anyone who does know them. In fact, I was so subjectively detached that I could have sailed through voir dire with flying colors.
Assuming for the moment that I would indeed be an honest and objective juror, loyal to his oath, what reasonably prudent person could seriously challenge my vote as to the verdict when considering no more or no less than the cold, hard facts of a near murder versus the victim’s assertions that this was a one-off beating and she wanted him back home from the get go. It’s a no-brainer. The rule of law matters to Americans and to Mississippians. You can pity the victim all day long. What you cannot do is thumb your nose at duly-prescibed criminal statutes enacted by the elected legislative body of the state and signed into law by the governor. Period. Does it happen? Yes, and 9 times out of 10, it’s called jury nullification — a legal fiction that wasn’t remotely applicable to The State of Mississippi vs. Jason Todd Mardis.

"Physiognomy, the junk science of reading character from facial appearance, has a long history, with the first preserved documents referring to it dating back to Aristotle’s time."
I'm not wasting time critiquing all the other bullshit in your long-winded post.
Kingfish, you DO cover all 'races,'etc..The ones saying that you're "obsessed with it," or whatever - no. Not at all. I don't feel that way at all. I'm not trying to 'kiss your ass," either. Just telling how I see it.
A whole lot of people knew the sh**hole. I went to HS w/him, too, & loathed his ass.I can still picture him walking down the halls at Prep like he was some god, with his little squinty ass eyes. He was a narcissist then, and when you google him, now.. still obviouslyva narcissist. I felt almost certain that he would get ZERO jail time. Ju$t a feeling. I was so glad when I heard 20.. but then 17, but then possibly 8.5 yrs.. She'll prob. WAIT for him for THAT amt of time. Not enough. PS - Yeah, the "gofundme" for the family?? Please.. I KNOW his ass aint worth $100 mill.. but that was what was reported in the beginning. Enough, I'm sure, though, to NOT need a gofu**me account. (unnecessary censorship)
Jan 30 @ 5:31pm: Doubt anybody on here will be "standing next to Mardis" in THIS decade, anyway. Sure won't be me..
I would love to see a “go fund me page”! This would show how many people really give a shit about keeping his family in a white collar status. That isn’t up to the public, that is up to his family members and co workers in the court room!
Man, he really looked attractive after hearing his sentence.
So the Judge sentence him to 17 years and y’all mad why. The max was 20. Y’all complain about any damn thing.
So question…..is the no contact order still in place? Does that mean she can’t visit him in prison? Just curious.
Great Job Judge & DA! She needs some help a typical abused woman, this wasn't the first time and probably will not be the last! Get some self respect if not for yourself ? Then get it get it for your children! I am appalled you would call him such a good man, daddy, person. Please seek help and move on from this monster! You came so close to dying. He isn’t sorry, he is sorry it was caught on camera. She will be there every visit cooing over him. Monster still is a monster! Thank you Rankin County!

Mardis already has a ‘Go Fund Me’, it’s called the honest law abiding Mississippi taxpayers taking care of his sorry ass for the next 8-17 years! Maybe his family and friends can get an honest job and help contribute to his cause and start paying the taxes that Todd so adeptly helped others avoid his entire career.
KF
Being a violent offender any idea where Todd will be sent? Central MS, Parchman, Oak Grove, Ellisville??
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
Galatians 6:7
It was obvious in this case the wife's opinion didn't matter at all. That's the way the law is supposed to work with domestic violence. She is the poster child for this type of crime. She's brainwashed to the point she is a willing participant in the crime after it's committed. That's why domestic laws take over. The court did a good job. I hope he gets to do some hard time. 8 1/2 is a long time for that kind of person.
I personally know the judge and he is as honorable as anyone I know.
One benefit of the sentence is that it protects the wife from herself for 8.5 years, give or take. I remember seeing that booking photo after he got arrested and thinking that is one pissed off man. The “she made me to it” vibes were flashing off the neon yellow of that jumpsuit they had him in. I feared for her life right then and there. That was before she suggested that she made him do it, before the grown daughter said “daddy, I know it was her fault, but she was hurt pretty badly,”* and before her final confession of guilt for causing his bond to be revoked (as if they’d have been leaving court hand in hand instead of him facing hard prison time if it wasn’t for her).
Assuming she’s watched the security footage, how does a person’s cerebral cortex receive the actual sensory visual input of her near fatal beating at the hands of her husband yet mentally process those very same images as “it was all my fault.”? Nothing about this bodes well for the present or future generations of the Mardis family, absent intensive, long term therapy for every one of them.
I hope they get the help they need.
I hope Todd Mardis does the hardest, longest stretch of incarceration that can lawfully and reasonably be arranged.
He worked hard to earn it, as evidenced by the video of him viciously assaulting his wife.
Ms Mardis
you don’t stand a chance when he gets out of jail..He will kill you …he holds you responsible for his actions internally.
you have more fear than sense. you are not brainwashed by him, you have been threatened within an inch of your life.
i pray that you fall to your knees and ask God for direction and really listen to the Almighty. HE will give you clarity and direction
and more courage than you have ever known.
do you know where you would be now without the video?
right next to your parents in the cemetary.
i wish you well.
next step in Rankin County justice is to see the sheriff go up on corruption charges, along with the sullivans, and dean scott. i hope all the corruption in this county comes to light. only the fbi can do it, as it is clear the judges, da, ag havent had the integrity to bring these criminals to account.
Feb. 1 @ 2:21 Very well said
Sad that Kim Mardis, who was damned near killed by this man, still thinks he's the greatest. Years (many years) ago, I was in a very abusive relationship (I think this person today is a Pearl firefighter - he's pure trash), and I suffer from the ramifications of his abuse 30 years later. Orthopedically and mentally. Kim Mardis needs to run. RUN RUN RUN Kim, love isn't someone nearly killing you. No one that loves you would do this to you. I've been there. Just go.
Colletti need to give the family back about half their money ($250k). Had that man believin that video was gon be thrown out. Crook. Be surprised if family don’t file a complaint against him for this.
Anyone sticking up for this piece of garbage isn’t any better than he is.
He is a loser who gets off on abusing a woman. 🙄.
Kim put on a great show. She knows she is safe now. The divorce won’t be long and she can get what he has left! Smart women.
Am I the only one who noticed he did not apologize to his wife who he almost killed? Very telling. He said he loved her but when he apologized to everyone else, he never mentioned her. Very telling for his so called remorse. He’s just sorry he didn’t get away with it. His actions are yelling.
February 3 @ 10:04AM — not only that, but did anyone else get the feeling that neither her plea for leniency nor his so-called allocution was particularly full-throated, if you know what I mean. Very little emotion from either one. She had to cough or clear her throat every 3 or 4 words. His “it will never happen again” assertion would be funny if it wasn’t so hollow. Doesn’t every human being start saying those exact words by about age 3? And never stop? I’ll never tell another lie. I’ll never disobey my parents. I’ll never smoke another cigarette. I’ll never drink more than two beers. I’ll never cheat on another test. I’ll never roll through another stop sign. I promise. I swear. I swear to God. I swear on my dead grandmother’s grave. Please.
Did anyone comprehend “almost 10 minutes of beating”. MDOC will access his anger management….both inmates and counselors!
Time will, but this may be the most insightful comment of all of the above:
"Kim put on a great show. She knows she is safe now."
And this may be the least:
"Colletti need to give the family back about half their money ($250k). Had that man believin that video was gon be thrown out."
I can't blame an abuse victim for doing what she's told, when all of her experience tells her that not doing so will result in a severe beating, and no one can/will stop it from happening.
I can only imagine what would have happened if Kim had testified against her husband, and then he was let go. Abuse victims have been conditioned to believe the abuser is unstoppable (and sometimes they are). Survivors do what they have to do to survive.
Co$$ette made sure it was good for someone. The video was horrible the judge is correct she is lucky to be alive.
Instead of a Go Fund Me, she could probably make a fortune by telling her story to someone and selling the rights to the video. I’d pay to see it and others would too, so his handjob homies can argue about how cool he is. Put Barry in cell with Todd.
The question is Why. What was the trigger that caused his outrage?
Rest assured, her testimony was real and what she really thought. No acting.
I knew dozens of guys like him growing up. They acted the same way because they got away with it, usually because they were good athletes or somebody "important" was kin to them. The only difference was that this particular guy had "a lot of money" and most of the ones I knew did not.
I'm glad he's locked up, because the consensus opinion is that it is well-deserved.
Don't drop the soap!
It's time for Kim to serve the Divorce papers on this BUM- Be rid of him once and for all, don't look back and go live the rest of your life happy and not worried about what you can or can't say.
With Todd's attitude- he will mess up and do all 17 hard-
Mardis will have a hard time in prison. He’s already high profile due to the media coverage. Once the inmates discovered he tortured a woman nearly to death, confrontation will be recurrent. He’ll be forced to defend himself and likely lose any “good behavior” status he’s hoping for. I’m taking the over on Mardis serving full 17 years.

I keep refreshing to see when they update with photo and when/where he will be transferred.
His mental capacity will be tested. He will be fine physically!
Todd got 20 years- less 3 years suspended- at mid 50’s he will be an old man if he ever walks out of the gates of hell- Personally I’ve have known him and the family for 20 plus years- sure he was a hot head- yeah Ms Kim was as sweet as can be, but he crossed the line- and for the life of me, I can’t understand why she would beg and plead with the judge to let him go free…
Todd, my friend- as the Judge stated, you’re lucky that you weren’t there on murder charges- I pray for you and your family, but buddy, you fuc.ed up big time-
You had a nice house, hunting camp and all the toys most people would love to have just a small faction of- now go live in your shit hole cell for the next 8-17 years- Kim, time to move on, and forget this sorry POS- live your life and don’t get stuck doing visitation nonsense- leave that sorry ass once and for all and don’t look back.
