MBI Gets New Director

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety issued the following statement.

Today, Commissioner Sean Tindell announced the appointment of James “Jimmy” Herzog as the Lieutenant Colonel and Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI). He will assume this position on February 1ˢᵗ, 2024.

“I congratulate Jimmy Herzog on his appointment as Lieutenant Colonel,” said Governor Tate Reeves.
“Jimmy has had an extraordinary law enforcement career that has spanned three decades. In that time, he distinguished himself as a dedicated public servant who is committed to protecting and serving Mississippians. MBI will be well-served under his leadership.”

Herzog is an accomplished professional with three decades of experience in law enforcement and has
built a distinguished career throughout Mississippi beginning at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Since July 2022, he has been serving as Chief of Security at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture. Before assuming this position, Herzog retired from MBI, where he held diverse roles over the years. Notably, he served as the Captain overseeing the Special Operations and Major Crime Unit, which managed the Amber and Silver Alert System. Additionally, Herzog played a pivotal role in the creation of the Endangered and Missing Child Alert System for the State of Mississippi.

“I want to extend my greatest personal appreciation and sincerest congratulations to Jimmy Herzog as he assumes this leadership role at the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Since coming to MDAC in 2022, Jimmy has successfully implemented a comprehensive security plan for the Mississippi State Fairgrounds, working to create a true multi-agency Security Task Force that has been highly successful,” said Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson. “We are grateful for Jimmy’s expertise and professionalism, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration with Commissioner Tindell and his excellent team at DPS, including now Lt. Col. Herzog as he embarks on his new post as Director of MBI.”

Over the course of Herzog's career, he has completed the New York State Police Homicide Investigation School, FBI Hostage Negotiation School, and FBI SWAT Team School. His achievements include receiving the Secret Service Award and the Law Enforcement Appreciation Award for his instrumental role in apprehending the murderer of Sheriff Lloyd Jones, among numerous other accomplishments.

"I am delighted to welcome Director Herzog back to the Department of Public Safety team,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell. “I am confident that his tenure as Director at MBI will be marked by great achievements. His wealth of knowledge and experience will undoubtedly contribute to the agency's continued progress and growth.”

Credentialed? Yes! Experience? Sure! Familiarity with role and department? No doubt.

But, if I read the announcement correctly, he retired from this same department after 30 years in various roles.

Why put an old war-horse (currently in a soft position over at Agriculture) back in a role he's already held and expect any fire in the belly? Ain't gonna happen...

If you want a retired desk-jockey back in an old role, he's no doubt an excellent choice.

In 3..2..1 "Great choice", "Good Man", "The right man".

Well deserved. I wouldn’t have picked anyone else for the position.

How much FBI SWAT schooling and hostage negotiation training did/does the fuckin' Mississippi Department of _Agriculture_ need? Anecdotally, I know a small number of folks that retired as upper management in law enforcement organizations and a couple did take much less stressful management positions after aging out at their earlier organizations. They did so for both for monetary reasons as well as not wanting to completely retire yet but none have expressed any desire to return to "serious" LE organizations even if they could do so. In fact, quite the opposite. I wouldn't know Mr. Herzog if we were seated next to each other at an event. He might be an objectively great choice made for the best of reasons or a not-so-great one made for unfortunately typical reasons, but the announcement certainly raises questions about his career choices and those who made the decisions about his employment and moves.

I thought Tindell ramrodded MBI. Now I find out there's, what? some middleman? yet another chief? another assistant deputy superintendent director foreman to the head muckity-muck? These "law enforcement agencies" certainly seem top-heavy to this observer of all things Mississippi.

Herzog is the absolute best choice for this job. He has the experience needed and a strong background it looks like from what I see. Also, he did a great job at MDAC from what Commissioner Gipson said about him. He will continue doing great things for our state. I wish him the best of luck!

Next time read with comprehension before launching your attack. Mr. Herzog attended the SWAT and Negotiations schools while working for DPS. He’s a good guy.

Herzog showed his outstanding character when he was MBI, a trooper, and his job at Ag Theft. Anywhere he goes, he will do well and excel. Outstanding!

3:43 responding to "Steve" at 4:38:

I understand Herzog attended that training while at DPS. My point was that Ag certainly had no need to "poach" him because of any such training; Ag certainly didn't and doesn't require a security chief with such credentials. His move to Ag appears to be a "winding down the career" move rather than a inter-agency move up the LE ladder in a law enforcement career. And as I said outright, that observation was in part based on anecdotal information. Otherwise, like I also said outright, I know don't him or know anything about him, and I did not "attack" him. I simply noted the information in the releases about his career could raise some legitimate questions about his return to DPS as director, especially coming back to DPS from Ag as its Chief of Security.

I'm starting to believe the pumpkin farmer with the big white hat has been running quite the operation as the Director of Agriculture. I don't believe it will be much of a contest when he and Shad get to scrapping to replace Delbert after Dwlbert gets his eight years after Tate!

As I predicted at 11:24 - "good guy, great choice, outstanding character, best choice, well deserved, always kept his desk neat".

None of that explains the wisdom of bringing a government mule out of the glue-factory waiting-room and putting a saddle on him.

On a positive note, he's not a diversity hire.

Herzog should not be allowed to carry a firearm anymore. After pulling a gun on kids in his neighborhood. This guy is a mental case.

Awful hire. Seriously, could you have picked a more unstable human? He acts like our neighborhood is his own little fiefdom--has pulled guns on innocent kids numerous times. The latest was last April. He and his son-in-law also threatened the latest victims and told them to "wait until they caught them on the streets of Madison by themselves." Good thing the whole thing was caught on video. He and his family have literally terrorized the neighborhood for years and now you put this fool in a position like this? Perfect example of either failing up or Andy Gipson passing his trash.

@4:38 - Please explain how you consider this man "a good guy" while know that he has on more than one occasion brandished a firearm in a threatening manner in the presence of children.

Let me guess - You live in Rankin.

10:46 and 11:34 are absolutely correct.
This man is an absolute psycho.

@11:34am Summed it up with complete perfection. Many, Many, Many people in the neighborhood will gladfully verify this information posted at 11:34am.

What are the ages of these children? The Psycho you’re referring to has over thirty years of impeccable service and is highly respected throughout this state by those who have worked with him of for him.

Most deserving man I know. Excited to see what he does for the state of Mississippi.

I know Herzog and his family very well. Will be a good asset in his new career with the state.

2:32 and 2:34, do you have available homes in your neighborhoods? We'd love for them to move in next to you. Bet you'd change your tunes pretty quickly.

Good choice 👍

One of the best. Great hire!

He gives good officers a black eye. He hides behind his badge and one day he is going to hurt someone he shouldn’t. Does anyone do background checks anymore?

For all those With the “great choice” themed comments
It sure is interesting both families (Herzog and son in law) get kick off the neighborhood Facebook page . Then they start their own neighborhood Facebook page in retaliation then they themselves closed that account after their newest April 2023 incident involving the sheriffs department again. Can’t make this up

He’s had an excellent career anywhere he goes. Well respected. Excited for MS.

Anonymous said...

Best hire that could have been made.

Anonymous said...

Great for the state of MS!

Anonymous said...

11:04: then we’re in dire straits in this state if this is the “best” choice.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations!! Great appointment!

Congrats!!!

Anonymous said...

The best man for the job. DPS couldn’t be more thrilled.

Anonymous said...

@5:12 are you with the DPS? Is the DPS not concerned about these accusations? Seems like they would need to know this kind of stuff.

He is a good man…I’m glad to call him neighbor!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
