Mayor Makes More Excuses

Expect road shutdowns to happen again in Jackson.  Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said his no-chase policy prevents JPD from pursuing drivers who shut down the interstate Friday night.  The Mayor defended the police at his Monday press conference.

A horde of rowdy young people shut down I-55N just after Lakeland Drive Friday night.  Drivers performed donuts and other stunts to the cheers of their friends who stood on the interstate.  JPD claimed it thought there was an accident and took awhile to get police cars to the front of the pack.  The mischief-makers fled when they saw blue lights approaching.

Good job, Mayor.  You just told every miscreant in Jackson that you won't chase them.  What do you think is going to happen? Hell, one dude laughed at you on Facebook as he said he and his friends weren't worried about "no damn tickets."   The Mayor said this same problem is occurring in other cities such as Detroit and Memphis.  Watch the video.  One excuse after another is made as he dodges all responsibility as he is so want to do.

Here is what the Mayor doesn't get.  Once you lose control of the streets, literally anything can happen.  All it takes is one driver saying to hell with this and attempting to drive through this crap.  That is when the fun starts.  Assume these cats are armed and not just with little pocket pistols.  It wouldn't be surprising to find out a couple of them have AK-47's in their vehicles.  They probably have Glocks with those  extended 30-round mags.  All it takes is some fools acting a fool on the road and someone else with a temper and boom!, there is a shootout no one wants to see.   Hope those innocent people stranded in their cars don't get hit.

Ever wonder why you don't see this crap happen in the burbs or even Canton? Because everyone, and I mean everyone, knows the police and Sheriff would not stand for it.  Fortunately, they don't have Mayors tying their hands.  Unfortunately for Jackson, the Mayor is better at finding excuses than at fixing problems.    It's easier for him to stand up to a bunch of white folks who run the zoo than it is to stand up to the criminals that terrorize Jackson and that my friends, is the bottom line.

Things will only get worse in cities that “defund” the police

Can you give us specifics on the JPD no chase policy? What are the limits of that? If someone is kidnapped, are they not going to chase the suspect's vehicle?? Or will they just not chase lone criminals fleeing a crime scene? (Although one would still think a chase is necessary in that situation!)

At some point, those of us who still care enough have to say screw it and do something about it. I live in Jackson and I know there's more idiots than not so im talking to folks in the suburbs here. If you continue assuming that this nonsense is gonna stay inside the city limits you're wrong, getting jxn under control is prevent defense for keeping Pearl, whats left of Ridgeland, Madison, Clinton, Whats left of Byram, etc. safe from these terrorist.

Who in their right mind would invest anything within the Jackson city limits? Jackson is their own worst enemy.

Kingfish brings up a great point. And don’t forget, a lot of those folks stuck in traffic are carrying also. And they’ve been trained to defend themselves.

Wish they would build a loop around Jackson in Rankin County.

Bring that I-55 donut shit up here to Madison County. I dare you!! Our LEOs have already developed a deployment plan, and we don't have a "no pursuit" policy, let alone an "ask nicely" policy.

KF, excellent analysis! Keep it coming, and happy new year.

Is anyone gearing up to oppose Chokwe in the next election that seems to be worth a damn?

I wonder who they expect to ride those new Jatran buses once NE Jxn empties out of tax paying residents. The incompetence and misplaced priorities of this administration is unreal.

WE often hear that this person, the alleged "mayor" has plans to supplant Bennie Thompson in congress in the gerrymandered black congressional district.

I wish he would hurry up. He could team up with the newly elected "senators" from Georgia to form a vacuuous triumpherate of empty heads with no real plans except "gimmie, gimmie, gimmie".

In the long run, we must face Margaret Thachers words of: "socialism works fine until you run out of other peoples' money."

For Jackson to survive and even thrive, it will need a mayor, a real mayor, and a decent city council. Dream on that one for a while.

No chase is his excuse?

The interstate was empty - it had been blocked for an hour. Nobody else would have been in the northbound lane. The only ones that would be in jeapordy for miles and miles would be the idiots that conducted this wanton display of F**k you to the city's so-called leadership. The problem is, the city has a don't give a shit policy about things like this.

Congratulations Mayor. Right?

every person in Belhaven and fondren that watches the posts on NexDoor knows that for over 3 years, basically every friday and saturday and sunday night people are calling the JPD about the racing on the interstate and frontage roads b/w Lakeland and Meadowbrook.....then there is the reckless driving b/w lakeland and county line/old agency. Nothing is done. There are no patrols at night on I-55, there are no patrols on the weekends. I emailed Virgi Lindsey about this, and true to fashion, never a response. I can not help but wonder, why does a council strong city government continue to allow this. The mayor, who was elected into office with only 25,000 votes, is a total blind idiot.

Lumumba is actually doing a good job on crime based on his beliefs. The bottom line is that different segments of the population have a different belief on crime. One segment thinks that a 16-year old robbing a store with a gun is a bad thing. The other segment thinks the kid is misunderstood and just wasn't given a proper chance to succeed. One segment thinks that stealing a $30 item from a store is shoplifting. The other segment thinks that it is only a $30 item, and the store owner is wealthy, so it's not a big deal and the thief was really entitled to it. One segment thinks that if a cop responds to a 911 call, and arrives and is attacked by a criminal that is bigger and stronger than the cop, and the criminal has every intention of killing the cop with the cop's own gun, that the cop is justified in defending himself. The other segment thinks since the criminal is unarmed, the cop had no right to defend himself, even if the criminal was trying to fight the cop for the cop's gun so that he could use said gun to kill the cop.

You can read WLBT's facebook page about this incident on I-55. There is a certain segment saying it ain't a big deal, they didn't hurt anybody, they were just having fun. Read about all the people in Jackson stealing water and most facebook posters will defend the thief.

I don’t get the point of posting “news” articles like this and then not approving historically truthful comments. If you just tiptoe around the problem for fear of being labeled a “racist” then you are part of the problem. This is what the left wants.

The mayor is not an idiot. He is a person convinced of a certain ideology but totally challenged in it's implementation. It makes him look foolish. Perhaps by now he realizes that he and his father have the wrong job especially in a cash strapped hellhole like Jackson. Time to run to Sacramento or San Francisco or maybe just Atlanta. The "grassroots people" that he counts on don't know what the hell he is talking about anyway. Hang around here and he will eventually lose even the fools who voted for him.

I think 12:18 in on to something. There is a fundamental difference in perspective than can only reconciled when there is irrefutable evidence to answer the question "Does it work?"

I also agree with 12:50 that Antar is much better at dreaming up abstract plans and talking about them than he is at actually doing anything. Kind of like a kid sitting in front of a bong solving the world's problems.

Jackson's no pursuit policy is like a blank check for lawlessness. If you have the means and the bravado to run, then you have a sporting chance of getting away with whatever crime you just committed.

JJ, have any of these shown up in Jackson. Chicago has had 100s found there, going back to 2019. It's called a "switch". A small device that fits on the back of a Glock slide, making it full auto. Made in China, even has GLOCK counterfeit Logo. ATF doesn't know how many have been shipped into the US. 1 person arrested had 150 & was selling them for 500.00.

If the mayor & police chief have to lie so much, there must be a lot more to this than they're telling us.

Has Millsaps - Chism conducted a poll on Lumumba's approval rating?

So, let me see if I get this straight: If I'm driving up I-55 at, say, 80 mph and there's a cop running radar, and if he tags me at that speed and takes out after me, do I have to stop? Wouldn't it be better for me to just speed up? On the other hand, is the no chase policy only for Baby Chok's "constituents?" What if I rob a bank? Can the cops chase me?

11:20 That's where you're wrong. If you're actually serious about crime, you have a better chance of controlling it....which the suburbs have, even in light of my hometown of Jackson going to utter shit.

This Mr. Kingfish. Innocent people. Since this was/is an Interstate with a high probability people are passing through from out of the area, or out of state, and have no knowledge or warning about what may be happening. All Lumumba has done is increased the risk. An unbelievable statement and callous disregard for the potential fallout and circumstances.

How can you Jackson residents posting on here continue to live in Jackson? Are you so numb to the multitude of quality-of-life problems that all is ok? Serious question.

Anonymous said...

I’m with 2:13pm - With all the JPD running radar on i55 this week during morning and evening rush hour, it seems their solution to what happened on new year’s eve is to ticket all the mostly white working folks coming/going from Madison County. I wonder if I just sped up when I see one pull off the shoulder to come get me would they just let me go like they did with the “knuckleheads” on nye?!

can't help but think that every CEO of every hospital in Jackson needs to call the Mayor to the table on this excuse. What if a ambulance had been in route with a patient in need of emergent care, or a surgeon on call needing to respond to an emergent need?

In the city of Jackson, you just need a fast car and you can do whatever you want. They won’t chase you or ever even try to catch you. Dang, that’s scary if you aren’t a criminal. I’m really not blaming the police. Their hands are tied by a “do nothing” administration that probably reflects the will of their constituents. If their constituents were not ok with that decision, there would be pressure to change it. Do you think that is happening?

Question: So, if it had been a wreck on I-55, is it acceptable that the police cannot get to it for an hour?

fed up in Jackson said...

Councilman Ashby Foote in the news saying that MHP could have done more......What a joke, why don't you do more Councilman Foote......for over 3 years, we have all complained about the drag racing / speeding / reckless driving that occurs on our section of 55 and the frontage roads. Why don't you do something, and actually require there to be patrols during the night and morning hours that all of this behavior happens

When we told our neighbor in NE Jackson that we were moving he asked us to take him with us. His wife doesn't want to leave Jackson and I doubt he'll get what he deserves out of his house. He had made additions and probably has a ~2500 square foot house probably worth north of $200,000 if it were in Ridgeland or Madison. I doubt he could find a buyer at the price it's actually worth. Our old house was only 1800 square feet.

To 10:21 I left Jackson because of this years ago, moved totally out of the area. I saw it coming. WLBT: Council members call unauthorized I-55 shutdown ‘brazen’ and ‘lawless’

Banks and Foote believe Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba’s statement Monday -- that JPD’s no-chase policy prevented them from apprehending people in the incident -- could encourage more lawless behavior.
.....
“To make [the policy] public like that just invites, the consequences are, it invites more negative behavior, because they think they’re going to be able to drive away and get away and nobody will follow them,” Foote said.

Anonymous said...

Thank you 6:59. Ashy Foote is elected to actually do something, right? Pointing fingers really doesn’t help solve anything. So much easier than actually leading or representing your constituents. Wasting my energy even complain8ng at this point

fed up in Jackson at 6:59, maybe you misunderstood Councilman Foote. Yes, the Highway Patrol COULD have gotten involved and helped, but there was one major problem.

The MHP does not have primary jurisdiction on the Interstate within Jackson, just like it doesn't in other cities. Although Mayor Talk A Lot said in his press conference that the Highway Patrol helps in other cities but doesn't help in Jackson left out a little detail. But his loyal Chief screwed up and kinda let the cat out of the bag. JPD never called MHP and asked for their assistance.

MHP does not have primary authority within any city limits, but can and will come assist whenever asked according to the spokesperson for MHP. In the "other cities" that Mayor Talk A Lot tried to pass off as an excuse, their police departments ask for the assistance. The Chief acknowledged in his response that JPD didn't notify MHP or ask for assistance.

Your question about the drag racing (which oftentimes is not on state highways, such as when they occur nightly on Northside) can't include MHP. The knuckleheads (KF term) on I55 the other night could have been stopped and arrested if JPD had wanted to catch them, which obviously they didn't. If as the chief said, their officers were trying for an hour to get throuogh the traffic to what they assumed was a wreck - why the f**k didn't somebody with JPD put a call into MHP and ask for their assistance dealing with whatever it was that was causing a multi-mile long backup on the interstate within the bold new city. (Or is it now the Free the Land City, I can't keep up.)

The blame for this lies totally on Lumumba and his police chief. Maybe we could get the laws changed so that MHP could patrol in this incompete Capitol City without having to be asked. But until then - we are stuck with this administration's excuse for maintaining law and order within the city limits.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
