Rez Closed

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District issued the following statement today:

Under a statewide shelter-in-place order issued by Gov. Tate Reeves on Wednesday, most recreational opportunities at Barnett Reservoir will be closed from 5 p.m. on Friday until further notice.

That includes all boating on the 33,000-acre lake near Jackson: power boating, personal watercraft, sailing, kayaks, sailboards, paddle boats, paddle boards and canoes.

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District, the state agency that oversees operation of the lake, said it will close all 34 of its ramps and its parks. The order will also extend to private or commercial boat ramps on the lake, and to residents with boat houses and piers.

“All of our parks, picnic areas, disc golf courses, fishing piers and ramp areas will be closed during the Governor’s shelter-in-place order,” said John Sigman, PRVWSD executive director. “The reservoir is closed to most recreational opportunities as long as the Governor’s order is in place.”

Walking trails outside of the parks will remain open, but users are asked to adhere to recommended social distancing practices.

The Spillway Recreational Area will be closed, and no fishing will be allowed from the bank on Red Dot Road. Since Gov. Reeves’ order involves sheltering-in- place, no fishing will be allowed from any bank that is not under private lease.

No camping permits will be issued for sand bars upriver.

Kingfish note:  Now you've done it.  You clowns just had to go party on Flag Island last weekend.  Well, don't think you were alone as the Governor and some others flew overhead and saw it all.  So much for those who simply wanted to get in their boats and enjoy some quiet fishing.  The Rez is now closed to everyone.

Some of you need to read the Diary of Anne Frank. Why? John Sigman along with the other government officials in Mississippi are taking your rights away.

I'm sure this makes perfect sense to those (many of you) who are smarter than me. If you can walk down a pathway, why can't you put a boat in the water. When I fish, I avoid water that has a boat close to mine. I can understand no camping since babies are conceived by campers, but boats?

Oh Noooooooze!

Making babies on boats?

This is why we can't have nice things.

Please explain to me how kayaking in a single person kayak by yourself is a threat to public safety? I’m serious, I don’t see the rationale but I’d like to be open minded.

Anonymous said...

This is the dumbest I’ve ever heard of.... can’t go fishing in my own boat, etc etc, in the middle of a 33,000 acre lake

Anonymous said...

It’s because a bunch of selfish dumbass drunks hung out at flag island last weekend and screwed it over for everyone else.

Anonymous said...

I wish somebody would post pics or better yet, names. Public shaming might work better than governor mandates.

Now this is pushing things to the level of beyond "common sense". I'm starting to get a bit concerned now. Hopefully the adults in the room will re-think this one.

Rednecks gonna redneck. All of this is a hoax anyway.

Nope, we did it to ourselves.

The governors office is going to say this was a tough decision for the good of the public. I’m all for tough decisions when they actually do some good, but this is just a poor decision through and through. Public waters are a resource and typical use patterns in no way contradict social distancing guidelines. Federal guidelines actually encourage outdoor recreation like fishing specifically because it offers a safe respite from being huddled at home. Not everyone shops at Whole Foods. There are people across this state for whom a trip to the water is a trip to the grocery store. Very poorly thought out and lazy from a law enforcement standpoint. If flag island is a problem, if the spillway is a problem, close it and enforce it. The problem areas at the Rez could be broken up with some signage and very light patrols.

Remember this applies to all state waters. Tate would do well to remember how quickly the Mississippi wildlife federation was gutted when sportsmen across the state organized. If this were a good decision, people would accept it, but this is simply in no way a good decision when all factors are considered and risks assessed.

"Some of you need to read the Diary of Anne Frank. Why? John Sigman along with the other government officials in Mississippi are taking your rights away."

I can understand some need for hyperbole, but I think we can all agree that this isn't Nazi occupied Amsterdam... and, given the demographic that frequents JJ, you are certainly aren't a 13 year old Jewish girl fleeing the SS.

Get a grip, Karen. There's a pandemic. You live in one of the most anti-establishment states in the union. If you're running far right of Tate, you really have to ask yourself... just how far have you gone round the bend? I hear Idaho is take settlers.

This one is not on Sigman. The governor’s order says parks, lakes and beaches are closed🙄

Anonymous said...

Agree that this is a pound of cure caused by a few refusing to use an ounce of prevention. It’s also a distraction from the big hole in Tater’s order. Make list of what’s non-essential and put it side-by-side with essential services. Yesterday’s news conference was maybe the most minor of “major” announcements I’ve ever heard.

@12:10

A couple of deputies in a small patrol boat can break that crap up in a heartbeat. This is just a stupid decision by a stupid governor.

There are poor people who fish the outlet to actually feed themselves. Now what?

Anonymous said...

I knew this would happen. I made the loop around the rez last weekend and the numbers of people gathering was astounding. Total idiots packing every park, trace shore area and boat ramp. I'm beginning to think people in Rankin County are total idiots.

Unpopular opinion: There are more people at Walmart than the Rez.

Governor, you need to re-think the ban on fishing on State lakes, the most responsible citizens are on State Lakes! We don’t get close to each other!!!

Anonymous said...

Sailing and any kind of boating with less than 4 people should be excluded. Just put a limit on the number of people. A total overreaction.

This is bullshit. I would dare them to write someone a ticket and see in court how they can close down a legally navigable waterway. The constitutional precedence this sets is appalling. They snuck those cattle gates in at the spillway "for a short time" to shut it down, now they close them for high water, and eventually, and you mark my words, they will shut and lock them forever. They can shut the reservoir down, but they have had Pelahatchie Bay closed for 2 year because of that damn weed. I bet they don't use this time wisely to make repairs or kill the damn weed. Flock PRVWSD and Sigman.

Side note, anyone notice how their patrol cars have gone from "Reservoir Patrol" to "Reservoir Police"? Bunch of guys who cant hack it on a real force, join this police farce and hassle like there's no tomorrow. They pulled me over one time on July 4th because I didn't have a tag on a newly purchased vehicle. Showed them the bill of sale, all should be good. Wrong. When they didn't find someone drinking they tried to tell me that my truck was stolen because they couldn't read the VIN#. It was an older Toyota, and those have a tendency to fade. They weren't riveted metal. I showed him the window sticker from the dealership, the VIN# etched in the windows, and the plate inside the drivers door. He looked like an idiot and then came up with some BS excuse that his computer told him it was originally red. It was beige. They all are power tripping dumbasses.

I agree with the 1st poster that this government (Federal and Local) is taking rights away from the citizens and we blindly follow them. I also agree that punishing the many is not the way to go. Take care of the much fewer infected rather than basically incarcerate the entire populous. You think our Obesity, Heart Disease and Diabetic problems were bad before, just wait. And we can watch our Alcoholism rate also increase. News reported a 55% increase of alcohol sales nationwide) See you all later when they open the gates to let you all out.

While I agree that the boating and fishing are pretty darn good isolation and distancing, I suspect that the rationale is due to support facilities such as bathrooms and the like. I inquired about state camp sites and was told that because those wash houses and restrooms needed to be closed (lack of resources to properly (read: continuously) disinfect), the sites were, also.

Every one of us knows how bad those cinder block restrooms can get when all is well. Now.....yikes.

This whole Covid-19 shut down thing is really going to get KOo KOo in a couple of weeks. Domestic attacks are going to spike. Just wait. Yesterday, investigators arrested a California train engineer Tuesday after he allegedly derailed a train in a bid to crash into the USNS Mercy, the hospital ship treating non-COVID-19 patients at the Port of Los Angeles to lessen the burden on area hospitals, prosecutors said.
Eduardo Moreno, 44, was expected to appear in court Wednesday for arraignment on train wrecking charges.
Around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Moreno allegedly ran the train at full speed off the end of the tracks near the Navy medical boat, smashing through several concrete and chain barriers, before sliding through a parking lot nearly 250 yards from the Mercy, according to the criminal complaint.

There's really no medical excuse for closing down an OPEN AIR body of water. In fact, you should be outside being active. The sunlight is good for you. Sunlight helps to convert cholesterol to Vitamin D. You need Vitamin D for your immune system. Moving your body is good for you. Moving your body and exercising forces your lymphatic system to circulate more. Sitting on your ass in your dark house in front of the TV is not where you need to be. What a stupid order.

Unfortunately, there is a portion of the population that, due to ignorance and/or selfishness, needs the government to think for them. Statistically, 50% of the population is below average.

Then you get into the problem with pontoon boats. 10 or so people get on one, a couple tie up, and then you have a party going on. Got reports that happened last weekend as well.

Sounds to me like an opportunity for true Southern Patriots to take a stand for our liberty with a boat launching protest!

Remember Bundy Ranch, remember Ruby Ridge, remember that those involved with the standoff with the federal BLM were exonerated!

Don't allow the constitution to be trampled by petit tyrants!

Is Tate derangement syndrome becoming a pandemic in Mississippi? The Governor seems to occupy a large portion of the thinking on this board. What power he, and the President must have to hold the attention of such intellectual giants. We are truly blessed to be living in these times.

Closing the Rez was a wise decision. Over the last couple of weeks or so,
there have been so many irresponsible people gathering in the parks, parking lots, and upriver, etc. Totally ignoring social distancing. It's been ridiculous.
It's a shame that others are being penalized now.

Anonymous said...

KF, yes that is correct. There were parties all rafted up and upriver on the sand bars. That's one major reason we are in this mess. Also, I saw someone from the Rez Police on facebook saying they have been mandated to patrol the rez and the river and ticket, or run off people, even people by themselves or with immediate family and fishing isn't allowed. So if you are still patrolling, why not run the people off who are causing the issue, not the ones trying to find something productive to do by themselves? Major overreach, but that's the PRVWSD way.

I bet they don't close and lock Timberlake or Goshen Springs Campgrounds and run everyone off...you know, the places with bathhouses, and such. Oh that's right, they are generating revenue. Don't mess with PRV's revenue stream.

Meanwhile, other states are letting people fish without a license to ease the effects of isolation. I have no polite words for this decision.

Anonymous said...

8:55 - I have no doubt. But it's because they are too damn shiftless to get a job and earn money.

Anonymous said...

And in addition to the middle finger raised parties, folks kept driving around the barricades at the parks, the ones marked with "No Vehicle Allowed." Except their lifted trucks I guess. They parked outside and walked in to party in groups of dozens. Etc.

It's physically impossible to patrol the whole Rez to see if little Fauntleroy is kayaking alone, or Biff in the wake boat is alone, or if you are the special little exception.

And read that order, all your Rez friends can let you bank fish from their houses as they are under lease. You can still jog a marathon around the trails or bike or hike them. Stop the RWNJ hysterics. You weren't asked to don a uniform or work in a factory.

Please get a grip.

Anonymous said...

I usually do not speak in this manner but, Tate is a dumb ass. In the presser today, he states that the reservoir is closed to recreational and fishing activities. Then the next minute he ad libs “ we want you to get out and enjoy yourself, we have encouraged individual outdoor activities and if you can perform WHATEVER activities from an individual standpoint without putting yourself or others at risk, that’s perfectly acceptable.” WHAT THE HELL THEN! My wife and I should be able to get into our boat and go out on the river and fish without fear of Jack Boot enforcement.

Anonymous said...

@2:15
If you refer to patriots who defend the constitution as "RWNJ" then you are nothing more than a seditious traitor who deserves the DOTR.

Anonymous said...

@2:29 they are the Reservoir Police and they will get your tag # and pull you over coming across the spillway. Get it correct comrade.

Anonymous said...

2:34, please get off 4chan and stop the death threats via Internet. PS. Where were you when the PRVWSD closed P Bay for Salvania? Whitfield, or Mom's basement?

No one whining about not being able to freeload and boat on the Rez for one month during a Pandemic is an effing "Patriot."

They are an effin idiot.

StarRider said...

Tater says the reservoir is closed because they need the patrol resources in other places. Meanwhile the status of state lakes apparently has been reconsidered and they will be open as long as social distancing guidelines are followed by one or two people in a boat. (There are never any personnel at the lakes anyway.)

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
