The Defense Rests in D.A.'s Case

Note: Since Robert Shuler Smith has a trailer in Rankin County, does this mean he is a Rankin County Redneck?

Update: Jury acquitted Smith on the robbery charge but deadlocked on the aggravated stalking charge.

Clarion-Ledger reporter Justin Vicory has been covering the Rankin County trial of Robert Shuler Smith. Check out his Twitter feed for blow by blow coverage of the trial.   Both sides will have 45 minutes to present their closing arguments.   Mr. Vicory reported on the newspaper's website:

In an unexpected turn of events, Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith took the stand Wednesday to testify in the case against him on felony aggravated stalking and robbery charges.

Significantly, Smith testified he never pulled his gun on his former fiancee, Christie Edwards. Rather, he said, he "displayed" his badge and gun. The testimony contradicts that of Edwards and William Fears, the man who was having an affair with Edwards. Both witnesses testified on Tuesday that Smith pulled out his gun, pointed it at Edwards and said, "I'll do it."

But Smith said he merely withdrew his badge and "flashed" his gun, hoping to "de-escalate" the situation. He said he never pulled his gun from the holster and that he said, "Don't do it," not "I'll do it" to Edwards, as she claimed.

Edwards testified Smith pushed her against the bathroom counter and door frame, leaving bruises. Smith didn't dispute that but said he was trying to "de-escalate" the situation and pushed Edwards out of his way to get out of the house.  Rest of article.
Kingfish note: What do you think the verdict will be? Fire away in the comments.

My verdict is incompetence on the part of AG office. Will be surprised if Stan and Pat are gainfully employee at the end of the week.

I tend to think he will be found guilty but immediate cries of racism will come from RSS and his attorney followed by an appeal.

He said, she said = hung jury.

Smart move, pulled his gun and his badge, officer of the Court... It might just work, it is Rankin County.

Jim Hood's odds of living in the Governor's Mansion are extremely poor without Jackson's majority Democrats. Anyone who thinks they'll suddenly forget what he's done to RSS on that Tuesday in Nov 2019 are sorely mistaken.

Anonymous said...

If found guilty, will he have time to return to his home and her trailer to get the light fixtures?

It's a sad day when the AG's office has lowered itself to allowing disgruntled
rivals to pursue their vendettas against elected officials..not on the grounds
of corruption or malfeasance in office, but civil disturbances and bullshit.
RSS may be a sorry DA, but so what? If his voters elect him, that's what they deserve. These jackasses Jim Hood allows to run wild are an embarrassment. If they can't get him for striking a white woman with an all-white jury in Rankin County maybe next they'll find some old traffic tickets..

If he does get off, in Rankin County, he's the cleanest S.O.B. in Mississippi politics.

I will NEVER understand why Stan was allowed to try this case!

@2:20 "immediate" cries of racism from RSS? Hell, those cries have been going on since the case was filed. Yes, if found guilty, he and his followers will certainly scream racism - just as they do whenever anything goes against them or 'their peoples'. I guess this might lead some prosecutors in Hinds County to learn how white defendants feel in their courts.

Buck stops with Jim Hood, the jackass allowing the prosecution.

2:20 It sure has nothing to do with race. Ed Peters was a gangster and a long time crook but he didn't have those crazy eyebrows. If he did he'd have been prosecuted too. It's the eyebrows, not race.

It has always been a “He said She said”. And no way to apply “ without a reasonable doubt” when dealing with these folks.

The Supreme Court throws out any conviction. Please stop wasting time and money

@5:11 - MSSC might well throw out a conviction, if there was error in the process. But, if there is a conviction their reversal will be for "former" DA RSS. A conviction automatically removes him from office, which is more than likely what this whole thing has been about.

As much as I dislike AG Hood's performance, his attempt to prosecute this sorry ass public official for the criminal use of his office in Hinds County needed to be done. The fact that a Hinds County jury wasn't going to find him guilty (because of the 'heroics' of his grandparents) put a stop to justice. The appearance of Baby Chock in the courtroom with family showed what the whole deal was about. So, having failed to remove a corrupt public official on a good charge he had to resort to another probable misuse of his position - even if it was only 'flashing his badge and pistol' (for whatever reason still remains a question) - while being upset that his mistress was having an affair with his other mistress's husband.

No matter what the MSSC does eventually - this official that has been placed in the public trust needed to be removed. And evidently, he is not part of Hood's 'family', so he could be prosecuted.

There appears to be very little meat in the lead post here. Nothing but chatter about a gun. If it boils down to whether he 'pulled his gun'(as two witnesses testified) or 'flashed his gun' (as he claims), his ass is grass and he will be convicted.

Additionally, 'she' claims he pushed her against the wall, causing bruises and he confirms in his testimony that he pushed her against the wall. So....where's the defense?

You people who are fascinated with eyebrows are probably hanging out at 'Romantic Adventures'.......Take that.

4:41 wins today's prize! Awesome.

Not guilty. The jury can easily see that this is political. With all of the crookedness RSS is alleged to have done, you have to drag him to Rankin County and accuse him of assaulting a white woman? Maybe in 1950, but even a Rankin jury can see right through this in 2018. Jim Hood is toast if he runs as a democrat because a large chunk of democrats vote for RSS every 4 years.

I told you that officer of the court stuff would work, hell it always seems to work for other folks, why not Smith?

Anonymous said...

He won you are LATE.

Anonymous said...

Not guilty. I broke it here first.

Did Choke Way show up again?

Robert S. Smith. “The Innocent Man.”

Jim Hood lost my vote the minute he allowed Stanley Alexander to pursue this nonsense of a case. Also, I had more respect for Patrick Beasley, but I see he has now stepped into the ditch with his coworkers on this quest for revenge. The AG's office should be pursuing real cases, not boyfriend/girlfriend drama. That whole trial was a complete waste of judicial time.

No Hinds County jury is going to convict RSS or any Black elected official of anything. If his ass were hauled in front of a Rankin or Madison County...Oh. Never mind.

Anonymous said...

Why does RSS have a gun and badge to begin with?

Anonymous said...

Sorry folks but if you think this hurts Hood in Jackson or with the black vote think again. He's running against Tater and he literally could not buy more than 100 black votes statewide.

Anonymous said...

RSS ownes a trailer in pearl ???? did i read that right???

Anonymous said...

6:14 obviously does not follow the black media in Jackson. The persecution of Robert has already hurt Jim Hood in Jackson.

Anonymous said...

Yep 6:51. Rankin County trailer trash....

Anonymous said...

Hood is going to face at least one primary opponent. The blacks who control the Democratic Party in Mississippi already have candidates in mind.

Anonymous said...

So... Is the house in Pearl his "weekend home" or his everyday home? Says a lot about a man that is supposed to represent Hinds Co as the District Attorney but has a house in Pearl...

Anonymous said...

@641 - wrong. Simply wrong. What Hood better worry about now is if RSS decides to run against him for Dem nomination for Governor.

My experience has been that Pat Beasley is an unreasonable zealot. Proven once again! He does whatever he's told rather than using any independent judgment as a prosecutor should. This is a political witchhunt and he fell right in line with it. Shame on him.

Anonymous said...

Did I miss it or was the jury makeup never mentioned on this blog?

Anonymous said...

All you Tater Tooters can dream, but Hood is the Democratic nominee.

Anonymous said...

That's what Vicki Slater said. BOOM!

Anonymous said...

And once again the "Justice" system fails yet another innocent person. All due to the fact of his profession.

Anonymous said...

He thinks his situation is comparable to Emmett Till. Said so on TV.

Anonymous said...

I would be remiss if I didn't remind everyone that the great philosopher Orley Hood rightfully deemed Rankin County the spiritual home of the double-wide.

HOW MANY TIMES DOES AN ELECTED OFFICIAL... A DISTRICT ATTORNEY, WHO IS SUPPOSED TO UPHOLD THE LAW AND PROSCECUTE LAW BREAKERS... HAVE TO BE CHARGED WITH CRIMES BEFORE HE IS BOOTED OUT OF OFFICE????

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
