And They're Off to the Races for Sheriff

JPD Corporal Colendula Green will run for Hinds County Sheriff next year.  The JPD Public Information Officer posted this message on her public Facebook page recently:

Thank You God for giving me confirmation to run!! My Passion for My Purpose is to Genuinely work for the Citizens of Hinds County! I’m asking for Fervent Prayer & Unconditional Support For Hinds County Sheriff!! #GoGreenFor2019 #LetsGetIt #Prepared #Experienced #Dedicated #iCare #IAsk4OneChance2ServeYou

To say the incumbent is vulnerable is an understatement.  He has had his own share of jail problems as did his predecessor.   The overhanging threat of several sexual harassment lawsuits is present as well.  However, he will undoubtedly run for re-election.  Former deputy Richard Spooner will throw his helmet in the ring.  The Street Committee says Juan Cloy will jump into the fray.  It is not known if the man Sheriff Mason beat, former Sheriff Tyrone Lewis, wants a rematch.  The Street Committee also says quite a few people were pushing District 4 Constable Leon Seals to run for the job but he will instead run for re-election.

Oh, and let us not forget Melton flunkie Michael Recio. He will be running for Sheriff as well.

That's a scary (maybe pathetic is a better word) list. Can we bring back Mac?

I suspect the Hinds County Sherriff position is similar to the City of Jackson Mayor position-you will see a new one every 4 years.

Pathetic for Lewis, Mason, Recio, Conundrum ( Lol) even more so for Rhodes.

SPOONER will be your next Sheriff people.

All the above candidates have too many skeletons in there closet to be exposed.

Steve Pickett?

Leon Seals would be great but he is making too much money as Constable. None of the names mentioned are going to excite voters. My prediction is Mason in an apathetic landslide.

Having a badge and being the PR person does not qualify her to be the CEO/administrator of a large agency.

Anybody who gets a job as "spokesperson" for the department figures since it's only a popularity contest anyway, they ought to be chief or sheriff. They're usually not qualified for either position and you wonder how such inarticulate people become "spokesperson" anyway.

McMillin passed away.

Victor will be lucky if he gets 16%

Stand by for your next McMillan..

SPOONER, should've been sooner!

1114, yes, of course. But even in that state would be better than any on this list of actual and potentials.

11:14. even using a Oujia board to contact McMillin would be an improvement from the current sheriff situation..

I know Juan Cloy personally and have worked with him before. He's got a great perspective and would be a great choice.

This list of people who want to run the Sheriff's Dept couldn't close an umbrella. My black lab would a make a better choice for Sheriff of Hinds County.

@10:27 - you've got to be kidding. Was there ever someone more worthless? Maybe graham the legend.

Green is a stalking horse only running to improve the odds of someone else making the runoff.

Experience or general "know how" is no longer needed to qualify for any office.
Remember a certain community organizer?

Unfortunately for the citizens of central MS, not a single name mentioned has the gray matter required to prepare or administer a budget. They are all affable people, but that doesn't cut it. It is amazing that Victor hasn't been sued out of office yet. Recio couldn't get elected dog catcher. Tyrone isn't going to come back and risk another butt kicking. He isn't hurting financially and doesn't need it for retirement. Colendula Green barely functions as a communications point person. She is somewhat along the lines of a less educated, less experienced Diane Riley. The likelihood of Spooner being elected in Hinds is slim given the racial make up. Even if he was elected, the citizens would burn the county down the first time there was a controversial officer vs. black male shooting. Leon is a good man, but ill equipped for management. The person above that mentioned Pickett is obviously not familiar with Pickett being more concerned with playing and repaying politics than the actual work required to be Sheriff. All in all, Juan Clay looks to be a best of the bad options available at this point.

Buford T Justice for sheriff.

Green is a nice person. But her Law Enforcent accomplishments are non existent . Talking to the media is not a qualifier to lead one of the largest Sheriff 's Office in the state. She has no administration istrative background to speak of. She is running because of a popularity factor.

Every poster on this thread either has a horse in the race that they are already betting on, or they live in Madison. The silly season has begun!

I’d go with Steve Puckett too. Serious guy.

Pickett was Mac’s secretary and never ran a single division. If you’re going to suggest someone for a 120k job you might want to know what you’re talking about. I think Hinds county is going to be shocked at the number of people running for sheriff in about 6 months. Spooner has my vote.

Every JPD Officer that walks across the street and enters as Sheriff, tries to turn it Into JPD has only made things worse. (EVERY ONE)!! JPD got out of the jail business when Kane Ditto was in office so you find no jail management skills from that group of candidates. Effective jail management is one of the critical problems at that agency that causes an entire trickle down problem from crime rate to property values. Hinds County and Jackson effectively have no deterrent against crime because we have no jail to hold criminals in.We have a court system that doesn’t move and a Sheriff that can’t fivure things out or won’t call out the problems in an effort to fix things. The Victor show has been a repeat of the Tyrone show with different players and both shows are nothing short of a nightmare. So please don’t send another former JPD Officer over to do a job that requires so much more than they are equipped for.

It’s amazing at how many of the Hinds County Sheriff employees are supporting Spooner over the current sheriff or these other mentioned folks. They know he’ll straighten things out and make things fair and equal. Hinds County citizens are tired of and don’t respect the leadership of JPD because they never move the needle or produce results. Only excuses. I think with so much support from current and former employees of the sheriffs office Spooner wins it hands down.

Spooner is your choice folks. With him you get the best of both worlds. He was one of Mac’s go to guys so he understands the successes that Mac had, and he’s seen first hand the things that Mac could have done better. This will give him a huge leg up in not just bringing the department back, but making it better than it was before.

Anonymous said...

Everyone of the above mentioned folks are really good folks, but the only one with successful experiences running a lot of the different divisions of the Hinds County Sheriff Office is Spooner. I’m not even sure if the other folks have any sheriffs office experience of any sort.

I know Steve Pickett, Steve Pickett is a friend of mine and Steve Pickett would make a great Sheriff.

Mike Maldonado would make a better Sheriff than Steve Pickett.

I have been working at Hinds County for over 20 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how these JPD officers think they can run it after working in the biggest cluster f#@* of a department (currently followed by HCSO) in Mississippi. Two former JPD flunkies in a row have been elected to do it, and both have failed. That being said Both RW Spooner, and Juan Cloy are personal friends of mine, both are very competent Law Enforcement, and both have stellar careers at HCSO (Spooner) and JPD (Cloy). What I think people are missing though is that only a very, very small part of running a Sheriff's Department is in any way shape or form similar to running JPD. The politics are different, the public interactions are different, the finances are different etc... It seems to me that folks at or from a JPD back ground think it's all prop your feet on a desk and let the good times roll at the County... IT'S NOT! It's work day in and day out seven days a week. I know people are tired of seeing this but I think the citizens of Hinds County / Jackson really need to give Spooner a chance. He spent 95% of his career at HCSO. He started in the jail and worked his way up to the commander of the Narcotics Div, and did an outstanding job while there. Consider it people if you needed brain surgery would you want a guy who just graduated brain surgeon school, or a guy who has 100's of successful surgeries under his belt? Anyway that's my two cent take it for what it's worth. Spooner for Sheriff

Anonymous said...

Green isn’t qualified for the position. Facebook sheriff, yes. Hinds County sheriff, no.

To me, the best possible candidates are Cloy and Spooner. Vance could also be added to the list.

I personally wouldn’t vote for the incumbent sheriff.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
