JPD issued the following statement.
With Independence Day fast approaching, the Jackson Police Department wants to ensure that the citizens of Jackson and others who will be visiting our great city, remain safe during the holiday period.
With that in mind, the Jackson Police Department will be implementing its, “Operation Safe Streets”. This initiative will focus on high-crime areas where the city has seen a recent increase in activity. In addition, officers will conduct safety checkpoints throughout the city in search of those driving under the influence and individuals with outstanding and felony warrants, while enforcing any other violations that impact public safety.
The Jackson Police Department believes that high visibility is key and wants the citizens of Jackson to know that it is dedicated to keeping them and our streets safe.
The enforcement period begins tonight and runs through midnight on Wednesday.

Wow what a great idea.
So now we are going to start focusing on the high crime areas and just for one weekend. Wtf? Ignorance is a special place for the Democrats in charge. I can't call the leaders. They are not promoted for doing a great job but are voted in by other ignorant dems.
So the city needs money and it is all hands on deck to write tickets. This is a great marketing plan telling everyone to stay out of Jackson this weekend.
Maybe they will protect the flower shops.
NEXT!
Hope there's plenty of vacancies at the inn........................
"Operation Safe Streets"
So are they fixing the potholes and adding manhole covers?
Welcome to the Cap-it-al town.
So “Operation Safe Streets” started on Saturday night. Did it start before or after the guy showed up at the hospital Saturday night with non life threatening gun shots wounds?
Maybe Jackson will take early credit and say the guy was only wounded and not kilt dead.
They should start at JPS headquarters with all the stealing going on over there. Maybe the police can keep us safe from those crooks unlike our Governor.
My thoughts exactly, 10:47.
An initiative like this will probably generate many arrests, which the jail cannot accommodate unless releases are done in anticipation.
It's a vicious cycle which isn't JPD's fault, but it is JPD's problem.
It won't change until the DA's office, and the judges, and the court system do. What exists right now is profoundly ineffective and dysfunctional.
Hey YalI I just ordered me some dominos pizza and they said they are coming to Jackson with their nice lookin trucks and patch some potholes. I’m wondering if papa johns can do something like that. Kind of like show up with a gun and guard your house. If we get the pizza companies and KFC along with Burger King and McDonalds on board then us taxpayers are OFF THE HOOK
Y'all shouldn't criticize this latest anti-crime initiative, because "it's for the children."
In high crime areas in Jackson they are called safety checkpoints. In Madison County safety check points in high crime areas are called harassment.
You got that right, 1:02. Wonder if its because sheriff up here had the audacity to be born white? Naw....can't be that.
Round up the usual suspects.
"high crime areas" - damn the whole town is going to have to be covered.
I feel much safer already, so when I drove down MLK Blvd tonight, I only carried two Glocks instead of my usual two AR-15s, three Glocks, and 1,000 rounds of ammo.
Very curious as what areas they call ‘high crime areas’. Crime has been much more common than normal in northeast Jackson lately. Bet they won’t pay us any attention.
Sigh...
Jackson doesn't even make the top 100 FBI statistical list for highest crime rate per capita.
It doesn't make the list for murder either.
Mississippi, however, is number 3 in accidental shooting deaths though...beaten only by Alaska and Louisiana.
A lot of those deaths are children, but surely you gun toting cowboys aren't worried that your kids will be as fascinated by guns as you are.

A link would be appreciated to support that claim, since it has been in the past, and more than once.
Maybe there's nothing left to steal anymore (as Rush L has stated about Camden, NJ)
Sigh...
In 2015, Jackson, MS was ranked #6 in the nation in murder per capita behind St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans and Birmingham. Murders stood at 53, went up to 68 in 2016 and are at 50 here in 2018 and we are only halfway through the year.
Ranked 32 in violent crime.
LA Times: There were 489 people killed in unintentional shootings in the U.S. in 2015, the most recent year for which data is available. That was down from 824 deaths in 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Taking into account population growth over that time, the rate fell 48%.
NBC News: The study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that seven states — West Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee — all suffered from disproportionately high rates of unintentional firearm deaths.
Well, hope they start with the weekend night crazing on Northside Drive. The ghetto is approaching North Jackson fast.
8:32 AM Bless your heart.
What about being safe in my home? Damn it, come July 3rd we'll have to get under our beds because of all the shooting. Bullets will be everywhere and the police will say "there's nothing we can do about it." If this POS mayor would simply tell these idiots that ANYONE firing a gun in this city except in self defense will go to jail, just like in Clinton, Madison, or Pearl we might at least start to be safe in our homes. But maybe that's for the "peoples assembly" to decide.
