A manhole on South Street has been uncovered for over a year. It is currently marked by an orange barrel while another barrel has been stuffed upside down into the manhole. The only thing missing is bondo. Think I'm exaggerating? See for yourself.
Here is a better picture as well as a video.
The manhole is between the federal court building and the post office. It sits only a few yards from the headquarters of the Jackson Fire Department yet no one from the city can seem to take the initiative to actually install a cover on the open manhole. Will someone else have to be killed before the city actually does its job?

Yes
It will take much more than someone being killed for City employees to do their job. Death is a daily occurance in Jackson, and unfortunately no one pays attention to it anymore. We should riot.
Every state agency needs to leave Jackson and head for Rankin or Madison County. As a member of the National Guard I am particularly embarrassed by the condition of Riverside drive where the Joint Force Headquarters is located. I can only imagine what visiting General officers are thinking when driving into the front gate after dodging the potholes. Jackson is an embarrassment to Mississippi and is a sorry excuse for a capitol city.
Problems are city wide. Jackson = total unmitigated disaster.
This is how things are done in the most radical city on the planet.
I remember hearing a speech by the former CEO of Coca-Cola some years ago. He said that if America dies, there will be two phrases etched on her tombstone: "That's not my job" and "That's good enough".
This half-assed "solution" is the manifestation of a city administration employing both of those philosophies, and the death of a promising young woman one day before she was to graduate high school is the consequence.
Get 'em Kingfish. Hammer that ass until there is some accountability in this god forsaken city.
It is time for the State to shut the city administration down and take over, for the sake of its citizens safety and well-being.
Want to bet that DPW doesn't have a comprehensive list of missing manhole cover locations?
federal takeover is Jackson's last and only hope
The citizens of Jackson are very satisfied with their leaders. If not they would not vote for the same people over and over. If you choose to live in Jackson you should learn to accept the conditions. They will not change as long as the same people are in charge. Deaths of the citizens of Jackson are of no importance.
It's 2018. Shouldn't we be calling them personholes?
why are 2 man holes right next to each other?
how much would it take for the city to simple cut a cirle of 3/4" steel and tack weld them in place until they can be permanently fixed
I doubt anyone actually goes down in any of the man holes
But, we did finish our strategic plan.
Dignity rocks!!!
Step 1: Authorize Chapter 9 filing.
Step 2: File involuntary Chapter 9.
Step 3: Appoint Receiver/De-Authorize Local Government
Step 4: Triage and stop hemorrhaging.
Remember Lumumba during the campaign saying that there would be no learning curve if he was elected? That he'd be fixing Jackson's problems on Day 1!
Jackson needs to be taken over by the state.
Tate Reeves whines that we don't have cities, which he correctly notes are the growth engines for surrounding southern states. But when it comes to actually doing something with the city we have, politicians are afraid to even discuss options.
Either take over Jackson or move the state capital to Madison and start work on a planned city there. I know it sounds radical, but the alternative is to sit idly by while Jackson literally crumbles to dust and the state falls from 50th to Puerto Rico status.
Saving Jackson from itself is the fight that will define our state for two centuries to come. We need leaders who are unafraid either of the politically correct left or the "let's hide out in gated subdivisions and hope it goes away" right.
Sad. It takes someone losing their life to realize that decrepit infrastructure is dangerous. Remember the tee-hees about a beer truck driving into a collapsed road a few months ago. The Riverside Dr. comment is exactly right. That water line has never been properly repaired much less back-filled appropriately. Hence the ongoing disaster on the surface. Public works is looked at like everything else that is failing in this state...its there to create jobs and get money in the "right" hands in The Community. Wrong. It's purpose is to provide the basic fundamental infrastructure to civilization and commerce. Clean water, functioning drainage and sewer, serviceable roads and safe neighborhoods are the baseline to a functional community and Jackson can not deliver any of those.
Sad to so many people relish this
Yep, there ya go....just "rig" it up....where's the duct tape????
Were those photos taken in Venezuela or Nigeria? Asking for a friend.
The City with Hole.....ah soul.
When is the protest outside city hall demanding accountability and change?
There seems to be plenty of time for new initiatives and task forces...how about taking care of the basics first (like making sure fucking manholes are covered!), and then worry about how radical Jackson can become. Baby Chok is a joke - he's full of hot air and ZERO action.
Remember, for any protesting to be effective you can't just go to first base and go home. What I mean is at the first hint of organized protest, "his honor's" speech writer will come out with some shallow, patronizing statement to try to placate the masses and make this go away, followed by business as usual.
You have to stay the course and hold their feet to the fire.
A couple of tubes of caulk should fix that!
How has state funding of Hinds county and the city of Jackson changed in recent decades? Wasn't Jackson receiving an inordinate share of state funding compared to other cities throughout the 20th century while currently the city is the "red headed step child" for legislators.
That's the thing about people having the opportunity to vote for the government they want: the people get what they deserve.
What is your point 10:06?
It is pretty scary how little is known about how government works by the people on this site. Short of a State take over, nothing can be done to improve Jackson. It has tipped too far and is just about sunk. The State has shown no great ability to manage it's own issues and local government is a lot more involved. Feds can do nothing for Jackson is a creature of State. No chance for a merger with Hinds County for it also very bad.Other Cities in area would not join with Jackson and create a metro government. Plus and most important leadership of Jackson will fight any effort to make chances and they got the numbers from the voters to support them. Time to just move on.
A protest in Jackson will do no good. The only thing that can save the City is a massive fire, or an outbreak of some kind of deadly disease. Then we can start from scratch. Anything else is just throwing money into a black hole.
9:06 you are correct! Total embarrassment to the state of Mississippi.
Oh how I WISH there were like/unlike buttons for these comments!
I thought the dignity economy would fix all this?
There is a massive sinkhole in the northbound lane of West St. by the intersection of West St. and Fortification. Been there at least 2 years. The city has covered it up with a flashing construction sign laying down to cover the hole up. Right in front of Damon Stevenson's law office.
You should see the two large pot holes on State Street out front of Baptist hospital.
Okay, call me a Jackson hater (which I am not. I was raised there, owned two businesses and for 40 years called it home) But I do not visit Jackson except for hospital visits. I had two encounters with potholes and tire damage, but the final blow was coming in front of St. Richard's school I crossed what appeared to be solid pavement and it gave way to a sinkhole. Ruined front end, radiator, the works. Cop who came was polite and took me to Broad street Bakery to await someone to pick me up. when we went back to the site 45 minutes later another car was in the hole. Jackson is not worth the hassle when I can get what I need in neighboring communities.
Kingfish,
You should create a google map where everyone can collaborate and locate potholes, manholes, and any other kind of street issue.
I think one can add pictures to the locations and such.
Get rid of baby Chok and replace with.....Kenneth Stokes.
@12:57 I don't now about a pothole, but there is a huge money pit at 219 S President St.
We have had a fire hydrant leaking in front of our church for going on 4 years now. We call the city and they say it is not leaking. It obviously is leaking because the front yard of the church is a marsh and water runs down to the parking lot. If they can't fix this i can only imagine what else they haven't fixed. Its an embarrassment.
Replace Baby Chok with Lamar. That could be his punishment.
All this goes on and on and on.
A small child is murdered in the back seat of his Mother's car after being left alone in a parking lot.
A young lady is killed because of negligence on the City of Jackson's part when they ignore basic road maintenance and leave potholes uncovered.
Remember when President Donald Trump wanted to attend the Civil Rights Museum opening and there was such an uproar by the Mayor of Jackson and others?
Where are your priorities and just do you have any basic sense of decency or civilization?
10:06, no, state funding for Jackson has not been reduced recently. In fact if you were to look at all facets of funding, it probably has increased (proportionately) compared to other cities. And with the passage of the CCID, it will increase even more.
3:18 PM You have the best comment of this whole thread.
Blatant disregard for human life. Mayor & city council are culpable in this tragedy.
For the record: the next tragic accident waiting to happen is on northside between ridgewood and kirkwood. The bumps in the road on the hill are going to cause someone to be thrown from the road into either a tree or oncoming traffic. Just watch
Potholes, sinkholes, open manholes.....all need to be circled with fluorescent spray paint. Orange, yellow, bright green...any color that will, hopefully, get drivers' attention day and night.
This will need to be done by concerned citizens of Jackson...to help the city's "leaders" know where repairs are needed. If majority of holes circled, it would be interesting to see what the city looks like from above:)
Signs with the phone numbers of the Mayor's office and the Public Works Dept will also help concerned citizens know where to call to report problems that need to be addressed. I feel sure all calls will be most appreciated by Mayor Lumumba and Public Works Director Robert Miller....and addressed immediately....for sure....oh, yeah.
Lumumba is too busy pandering to West Jackson zoo supporters (all 48 of them), and discussing whether they should release officer names to public when gangbangers shoot first. Wow!! Meanwhile, tax base is leaving in droves and it’s a purposeful act of whiteys to undermine black power. No Chicklet that’s not the case. People leave because quality of life is bad, and no value in living here. Talk to others beside your paid security detail. What a joke that is! Why not spend that money on buying more orange cones.
@ 3:18PM I'm certain that you do not intend to offensive. However, you use that term 'civilized' as if European - American standards have the monopoly on what is civilized. You assume that the level of 'civilization' in Kingston, Port Au Prince, Nairobi, or Mogadishu is somehow inferior to your 'ideal' and on the surface that seems like a very privileged assumption. You should check your Priviledge.
I grew up in Jackson and lived there for years, so I certainly don’t hate Jackson. What I do hate is the fact that it has become a lawless slum because the voters are too interested in being sure that the radicals stay in office and not at all interested in what is happening to where they live. Until they elect competent people it will continue to decline, but I seriously doubt they will elect anyone different than the incompetent fools they have now.
I avoid going to Jackson as much as possible.
7:43, you said it all.
This one on South Street has been like this for TWO years, not one year.
I see where they just put a cover on the manhole on South Street a few days after Friday’s tragic
accident. This is the hole that’s been missing a cover for over 2 years. Why the hurry all of a sudden ??????
