It's time for Matchbook Monday. Some true gems of Jackson's past are
posted below. Feel free to add your stories or any information about
them in the comments section as you enjoy these blasts from the past. Readers
can email copies of any old matchbooks to
kingfish1935@gmail.com.
First up is the Coney Island Grill on Lamar Street.
The Grillis family expanded the restaurant in 1949 and changed it's name to "Chris Restaurant."
This ad appeared in the September 17, 1939 edition of the Clarion-Ledger.
Meanwhile, The Kingfish dug up the matchbook for what was one of his favorite restaurants as a kid. Nothing like visiting Jackson and the grandparents said, "We are going to Cindy's." I would literally try not to eat all day so I could eat as much of their fried catfish as I could.
Speaking of hospitality, the Mississippi Department of Tourism used to pass out this matchbook.

"Fine Paved Highways" The good old days...........
Send a postcard to Miss Hospitality, Travel Department M, Jackson, Mississippi and see if you get a response.
Air Conditioned. Cindy's Fish House. Ah. Sweet Nostalgia!
Coney Island Grill and Chris Restaurant were before my time, but is there a tie in to the "other" (?) Grillis family who later opened the Lamar Restaurant on south Lamar in the early 50's. Chris Grillis, son of the owner, shut it down in 2015 I think.
Remember the tourist promotional matchbooks, but only generically. Love the idea of sending a postcard to the listed address! Notice the reference to "zone" rather than zip code. I remember pre-zip postals zones, but not what ours was at this point.
Cindy's was a treat on the rare occassion I/we went.
I vaguely recall going to Cindy's for fried fish. I often ate lunch at the Lamar Restaurant throughout the 1980s and 90s. I liked the spaghetti, salad and french bread special. Maybe KF can find one of the Lamar's matchbooks.
There were so many restaurants in and around Jackson back in the 1950s through the 1990s that no longer exist. Thank you for posting these bits of nostalgia and memories for us old folks.
Went to the Lamar Restaurant about 10 years ago...it was a time capsule in many ways. The canned vegetables were definitely a step back in time.
