Antwain Dukes pleaded guilty to depraved heart murder in the death of Carolyn Temple yesterday in Hinds County Circuit Court. He also pleaded guilty to armed robbery. Judge Winston Kidd sentenced him to 25 years for each count. The sentences will run concurrently.
Dukes and his friend went on a crime spree in January 2015. They robbed people, beat up women, and eventually killed Carolyn Temple, a 69 year-old woman, in Belhaven. Dukes was free on a $25,000 bond for armed robbery went he and his gang began to terrorize the Jackson area. AA JPD press release issued when he was arrested stated:
Dukes is also being charged with the Armed Robbery of an Atmos Entergy employee.
Antwain Dukes and Antreal Jones were out on bond for a March 28, 2014 Armed Robbery. Both suspects have been indicted on this charge and are awaiting trial.
The sentencing order states Dukes will testify against his co-defendants as part of the plea bargain. Several other charges are remanded.
Kingfish note: Then there is this rather misleading headline over at the Clarion-Ledger:
Dukes did not get a 70 year sentence for killing Carolyn Temple. The headline is misleading and cruel to the family and friends of Carolyn Temple.

Hinds County?!?!? He'll be at home wif his Momma by Christmas. Should have gotten the death penalty.
Only 25 years? Disgusting.
A plea bargain. Let's wait to see what the others get.
is his sentence compliant w/ the statutes of sentencing for the crime?
how much money was 'passed' to hinds DA for such a plea deal????
The carrion-illegible be damned! Just another reason NOT to subscribe.
And what kind of judge gives this kind of light sentence? This felon will be out committing more murders all too soon. The inaccurate 70 years would have not been enough and 25 years (or what he will serve) is far from enough.
Justice? Hardly
Bring back public hanging!
granted it wasn't premeditated but this is bullshit, pure racial pandering. Little fucker should have gotten his hands and dick cut off. Fuck Hinds county...
He probably was not the shooter. There are two other suspects.
Not my boy. He might rob you but he don't shoot anyone.
The problem is the venue.
For 20+ years, Hinds County prosecutors have "confessed the death penalty" as a matter of course when there is a black capital murder defendant. That means they let the jury know during voir dire that there is no chance that the defendant will be executed if found guilty. The DA's office does this because they know one black juror would hang a case up, or hold out for "not guilty" otherwise.
That's why you see animals like this one getting the sentences they do. (Yes, I know there's a plea agreement, and he'll testify.)
But also keep in mind, elections have consequences. Hinds County voters must be presumed to be rational actors, right? They vote for the judges and the prosecutors they want, year after year; why would anyone suppose they want things any tougher on criminals?
King F he was there
I soooo agree with 12:32 and 12:33....hang 'em high and this BS will stop
Yea King He probably wasn't but most likely he was involved huh
It's difficult to get a grip on this question that appears above:
"..is his sentence compliant w/ the statutes of sentencing for the crime?"
Tell us, Einstein....what do you think the 'compliant' sentence is for murder with a history of armed robbery and assault already in the file?
A first time offender who kills somebody while driving drunk gets more time than that.
Was this one of Ivon Johnson's cases?
Typical, of both the Hinds County DA and Kidd.
He needs a rope around his neck
@ 1:52 / "Ima Letchu Off Lite Boy!" the questions is exactly what it is, and KF brought a good statement to consider in that this individual may have not been the shooter. It appears there is a plea deal in place, so I guess we will no know all until the others are sentenced. By no means was I advocating that this was a good sentence or a bad sentence for this individual. I do feel that this is a "light" sentencing, but again, until others are sentenced, we don't know the whole story, I guess. All that said, I was honored to know Conner McAllister, and was heart broken for his loss, and the city lost a really cool guy with some great stories when he left us.
With HB585 he might serve 12 to 13 years. Thanks Feel
My heart dropped when I read the sentencing. Been in Jxn for five years I'm from rural north Mississippi not used to this crime at all. To me it appears obvious it is nearly all committed by a certain demographic. That is why this is so scary- our lives are obviously only worth so little. You can get more prison time slinging a little dope than you get for killing whitey.
25 years without parole.
Hey, Kingfish. Who is responsible for this light sentence?
I noted that part of the deal was agreeing to testify against the other defendants.
I don't know enough about the strength of the case to know whether or not this was deemed necessary to make a death sentence case for the shooter.
I don't know enough about the Dukes family history to know if this one has been dominated by the others.
But, I'm sure the rest of you know it all. So please, enlighten me.
Hello, Heddy:
The judge who sentenced him.
