Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following press release:





Child in Critical Condition After Rescue From Overturned Submerged Vehicle

On Sunday afternoon December 28, 2014 at 4:09 p.m. the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one vehicle accident in the 1100 block of Star Road near Brandon. The caller stated that the vehicle was overturned in the water and that a 4 year old child was trapped inside.

Rankin County Deputies, Robinhood Fire Department, Rankin EOC and AMR began responding to the scene. Before first responders arrived on scene, residents from across the street and a passerby jumped into the water lifted the car far enough out of the water where the child could be cut free of the child restraint. The child was moved to the side of the road where a deputy and one of the good Samaritans began CPR. After approximately 4 minutes of CPR the child began breathing on her own.

The child and her mother were transported to UMC where the child is in critical condition. It is estimated that the child was underwater for over 5 minutes.

The heroic actions of the good Samaritans and deputy have given this child a better chance of surviving this accident.
