Sheriff Tyrone Lewis held a forum at Jackson Medical Mall on May 24, "Us and Them, An honest discussion with Law Enforcement and Black Boys." The forum consisted of two parts - several convicts speaking to teens present, and then several community leaders held a discussion on the problems facing young black males.*
The discussion was quite frank, and at times you would have thought you were listening to a panel discussion of JJ readers. They read the same unwed birthrate tables we do on this website. Unlike the Mayor, they don't have their heads in the sand. They see the failure of Jackson Public Schools, the 6,000 new cases a year in Hinds County Youth Court. They know young black males need a father and good male role models. While over at the JFP the concept of masculinity is attacked, these guys know how important it is, and what it means for these kids as they grow up without dads and discipline while traveling down a path to destruction.
It's easy to bash Jackson, as the leaders in Jackson have done plenty to deserve it; however, for every clown like Kenneth Stokes or ostrich like the Mayor, there are other black leaders who know there is a problem with black youth and are trying to do something about it. Unfortunately for them, talking to a group of kids or helping one in school doesn't carry a headline, as does Kenneth Stokes screaming his head off during a meeting.
The video below is former NFL player Chris Burkett's speech. He talks about the feedback he gets from kids and what he sees out there among young black males. I apologize for the poor quality of the video. It is much better on my computer but for some reason, it loses definition when uploaded to Youtube. I will post some more videos tomorrow and later in the week.
*Panel members:
1. Chris Burkett: former NFL wide receiver & CEO of Big Brothers/Big Sisters
2. Tony Yarber: Jackson City Councilman
3. Captain Joe Daughtry: Community Relations for Hinds County Sheriff's Office
4. Cassio Batteast: youth consultant
5. Gerald Mumford: Jackson attorney
6. Chauncey Spears: Department of Education
7. Larry Armstrong: Principal of Sowell Elementary
8. Sgt. Joe Wade: JPD and PALS
Note: I was the only white person present aside from two reporters. ;-) They showed up for a few minutes and then left after they got their "money quote" on camera. One note about comments: Insults and troll comments about panel members will not be posted. This is a pretty good topic that needs some serious discussion. That goes for you, SF.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Trollfest '07
Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Tackleberry will be on hand for an autograph session. KIM Waaaaaade will be passing out free titles and deeds to crackhouses formerly owned by The Wood Street Players.

Nice sentiments, but unless and until black leaders ackowledge the role of welfare in destroying black families, it won't amount to anything. The problem is systemic, and until the system is changed all the big-brother mentoring in the world is just re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Could it be that they are just trying to "free the land"?
KF,
How many Jacksonians were in the audience ?
On the left side of the stage, there appears to be about
twenty-five or more empty chairs and only one citizen sitting on the second row.
There is NOTHING JPS can do.
The problem is familial.
Anyone who thinks school teachers can overcome the problems associated with the lack of a family structure is insane.
80% of the kids are out of competition for a decent place in society by the 3rd grade.
The public schools systems in Mississippi have no chance to fix this problem.
You can discuss it and discuss it some more, but public schools will never be able to overcome the lack of family structure.
8:29, are you a school teacher or administrator? I am interested to know the vantage point from which you make your observations.
I would agree with 8:29 if his/her post simply suggested that public schools won't replace or compensate for a lack of family structure (but, who among us doesn't already know that?). I've not heard anybody suggest school is intended or expected to 'overcome' or 'substitute for' it. Nor is it the role of public schools to 'fix' 'it'.
@ 10:36
My wife taught in JPS for 15 years and recently retired.
She watched it deteriorate through the years. A typical class of 22 might have two students with a father and a mother. She taught many children who never knew their mother.
I don't think anyone really disagrees with my post, do they? If you don't believe, just go to PTO meetings.
@ Shadowfox
JPS cannot perform its basic mission until the family problem is overcome. You are right, it is not the mission of public schools to "fix" or "overcome" the problem. That's why any discussion of this is a waste of time. We can meet and write books and blog and organize and bitch and march and wring our hands until the eagle flies off the capitol dome, but public schools in Jackson will never be able to fulfill a mission of preparing black children for an opportunity to succeed. Consequently, when I read a story such as this one and the people around the table start talking about the "failure of JPS," I shut it down.
It's encouraging that the discussion is at least happening.
These "discussions" are meaningless political events.
If they encourage you, that's about all the good they'll do.
So what do we do, 1:01? I'm assuming that you're the same Anonymous from 10:15 and 8:29. It's easy to say what won't work, but do we just give up on two or three generations of people? These men may not solve the problem but they're making an effort. The process has to start somewhere...
The only solution I have been able to come up with(and I have thought about it seriously for years) is for the black churches to start their own schools. The churches can use Sunday School rooms for class rooms and begin the process using home school courses.
The churches could band together to provide classroom space and to hire competent teachers.
Of course the pastor may have to do without a new car every year.
That alone will probably squash the concept.
BUT
If they could make church schools work, a significant number of these kids might be salvaged.
Parents would be instructed of their duty to monitor homework assignments.
Kids who don't do their homework and perform adequately would be banished to the hell of public schools.
Churches are made up largely of families, and members who don't measure up to family standards are challenged to correct themselves in a way not available to public schools.
As the church schools succeed, you might see them grow and might see church membership grow as kids start prospering.
Funny you should question whether to give up on three generations of people, because that's precisely what is happening right now in most public school systems between Interstate 55 and the Mississippi River where the black population is most dense.
I guess I should sign this "Anonymous from 10:15 and 8:29"
I think sex education and access to birth control would go a long way.
Do you have an idea how stupid these kids are when it comes to sex? What they believe?
The recent teen mother documentary was very eye opening.
