Public safety matters, but too often our crime policies are built on gut instinct, not evidence. So what actually works?
In this episode of The Empower Podcast, Grant Callen sits down with Jennifer Doleac of Arnold Ventures and author of The Science of Second Chances. She breaks down what the data really says about deterrence, recidivism, and smarter policy, including why certainty beats severity, how simple nudges can reduce crime, and why second chances often pay off.
This is a practical conversation about what delivers results and what only sounds good in a press release.

I think the results in Memphis by the National Guard have proven active policing deters crimes even though all the leftys like to cite some biased academic studies that states it doesn't. If one were serious about turning around Jackson so it's a place folks want to move to and shop in again, Step 1 is saturating the City with police officers.
What works on crime is NO MORE SECOND CHANCES. Enough with the second chances. If you murder someone you should be put down. Stop giving people a “second chance” to hurt others that actually contribute to society. We have to got to start killing more of these savages and not letting them back out on the street. There are, in most cases, no hope whatsoever for them to redeem themselves. Murderers are lunatics. Start giving people that steal cars life sentences. Enough is enough.
Literacy reduces juvenile crime, which reduces adult crime down the road.
I bet that “simple nudges” author lives in a gated community. Harsher penalties is the way to go.
Pouring honey on them and putting them in a cage with bears is a great deterrent. For lesser crimes use fire ants.
Funny how all the “second chance” people change their minds once they or their family is attacked. It gets tiring when judges let these people out and they offend again and again.
If teachers knew how to teach
A law and order mayor would help. Mayor horn is another soft on crime mayor
Swift, certain, harsh, and humiliating punishment deters crime. Not much else. Read Kuan Yew’s “The Singapore Story.” He recounts that he learned during Japan’s occupation of Singapore that public canings were much more effective than imprisonment in stopping crime.
As I enter my 60's, my compassion for criminals is a little less than 0. I don't care whether they're wearing a hoodie or a $ 2,000.00 suit. Lock 'em up and protect me.
What deters crime? The number one answer is quite simple and well-known to those who have studied it: The perceived likelihood of arrest and incarceration, or worse (like getting shot). In other words, if the guy thinks he will most likely get caught and go to prison, he'll probably decline or move on. This may not apply to mental defectives and drug-addled addicts. Skip straight to being shot.
Winner end of conversation
How about instead of treating the criminal justice system like a giant social experiment we just punish people for crimes they commit in order to uphold the dignity and worth of the victim
No one who has any power to do anything wants to do anything. If crime was decreased what would lawyers, judges, and those who are soft on crime do? It is up to the citizens to protect themselves from crime.
Heard earlier today on the radio that Horhn's new female JPD Chief has a Harvard team in town studying -- you guessed it -- the perception of crime in Jackson. I'm telling you, this lady is going to talk her brains out. she's going to trot out every excuse and soundbite under the sun to explain crime all away.
Public executions would work wonders. Charge admission.
That’s Dr. Chief. No one ever told her that “Dr” is reserved for professors and physicians.
What deters crime? Doing anything opposite of what Democrats think or say would drop crime way down, holding people accountable, public exhibitions, public embarrassment, 3 strikes, stop and frisk.
Another “doctor” explaining crime? Please GOD, please, please help us!
Crime is a proven, indisputable, purposeful Democrat Tactic, because:
crime sends those that don’t vote Democrat OUT of cities like Jackson and into the much safer suburbs,
leaving a majority of indoctrinated voters that only vote Democrat,
to continuously keep electing Democrats to run their cities,
regardless of how much those Democrats fail at doing so (can’t make it up).
Anybody know if the “doctor” “studied” the former Jackson Mayor Kane Ditto’s hiring of Jimmy Wilson out of Washington DC in the early 1990’s debacle?
5:42 PM’s gated community comment is likely close. Don’t know the doctor at all but willing bet she’s not living in Democrat controlled high crime Jackson while sending her babies to the Jackson Public Schools. The safe bet is, she’s “studying crime” from afar (while Democrats like Mayor Horhn, Bennie Thompson, et al are laughing their _____ off).
BS = We know what that means
MS = More of the same
PhD = Piled higher and deeper
I heard on the radio that lizard people live in the volcano under the coliseum and that they can control Andy Gipson’s mine via alien technology in his hat.
@704 - One has to seriously wonder if the chaos in cities is intentional so just as you say the political power structure remains intact.
Actual nurturing-yet-authoritative parenting reduces juvenile crime, which reduces adult crime down the road.

Blah blah blah.
Anybody know if the “doctor” “studied” the former Jackson Mayor Kane Ditto’s hiring of Jimmy Wilson out of Washington DC in the early 1990’s debacle?
Highly unlikely. She is thoroughly imbued by her own rhetoric. There's no room inside her predetermined narrative for the consideration of past failures.
April 3, 2026 at 8:04 AM, hahahahahahahaha, damn that was good.
It's very difficult to prey on innocent people if you're behind bars. Our vaunted legislators, when they're not enjoying unlimited steak and whiskey courtesy of this state's overpopulated lobbying corps, is reluctant to adequately fund "corrections" and then explain that to their constituency. Legislators are also quick to pass liberal parole policies to hold down the prison population for the same reason.
It apparently also doesn't apply to grifting politicians and appointees.
What Jackson needs is a female mayor. Everyone knows that women like laying down the law, and giving the orders.
Straw hatted Man on a horse, rifle in his scabbard, riding herd on prisoners chopping row after row in the sun, paying their debt for crime in a positive way. Better than rotting in a cell. When they finish, they can know they grew food with hard labor so the society they hurt paid less to keep them alive while they shrunk their debt.
That transaction is real and meaningful when extracted by their own hands in prison dirt. And the work makes them good again.
Happy, Blessed Easter.
"If violent crime is to be curbed, it is only the intended victim that can do it. The criminal does not fear the police, he fears neither judge nor jury. Therefore, what he must be taught is to fear his victim." Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper
At 4:58 in the vid the doctor points out that the far left says it’s a matter of poverty so give us more $$$ for social services, defund the police and abolish prisons. Now, think about how _______ stupid these leftist Democrat points are, but they’re real.
Wondering if the doctor knows who Robert L “Bob Woodson” is, and if she’s aware of his statement as follows:
“In the civil rights movement, one of the great promises we (blacks) gave to low income blacks, is if you were to elect blacks to public office through the voting rights act, and we (blacks) were running those institutions, that all of black America would be better off.”
“In the past 50 years, 22 TRILLION HAS BEEN SPENT ON POVERTY PROGRAMS. 70% GOES NOT TO THE POOR, BUT THOSE WHO SERVE POOR PEOPLE.”
“So many of those people taking office use this money to create a class of people who are running these cities.”
“Now after 50 years of liberal Democrats running the inner cities where we have all of these inequities that we have, RACE IS BEING USED AS A RUSE, AS A MEANS OF DEFLECTING ATTENTION AWAY from critical questions such as why are poor blacks failing in systems run by their own people, if race was an issue.”
This is not rocket science, so we need no help from “academia.” You either believe Democrats are literally stupid enough to believe in defunding the police, or you understand Democrats, while evil, are smart enough to know that they cannot control cities like Jackson – without the crime.
Like the ole saying goes: Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated (especially “academia”).
My old Sunday school teacher, Lt Col Albert Clark asked "Does the Death Penalty Detour Crime?" one day in Sunday school class. Not being a murderer ourselves my class didn't know how to answer. Bro Clark was a WW2, Korea & Vietnam veteran & he said when they were in Korea they relieved a company of Turks. Immediately the "Slickies", young Korean kids, started stealing anything that weren't nailed down. They had to put up a fence, then later had to electrify it. Bro Clark had occasion to have chow later with the Turk commander they relieved & asked them if they had any trouble with the slickies stealing. The Turk commander replied in the negative & asked why? Bro Clark told him about the trouble they were having & the Turk commander said "Yall not doing it right. 1st one we caught stealing we cut off his head & put it on a pole right outside the main entrance. No problems at all". So, it's all about how the punishment is implemented as to how it detours the crime.
