Renee Shakespeare's oldest son was murdered Saturday night in Jackson. JPD issued the following statement:
On 10/4/2025 at approximately 2350 hours, detectives responded to the 3100 block of Booker Street in reference to a deceased subject. Upon arrival, detectives located a 44-year-old b/m Michael Cannon who had succumbed to several gunshot wounds. Suspects are believed to be two unidentified black males occupying a black Honda Accord.
Renee has appeared with me as a co-host several times when I subbed for Kim Wade on WYAB. She served as Election Commissioner and has been active in the community for years. Our hearts and prayers go out to her and her family. Another entry in the crime ledger but a real life to his family and friends.

Sad. RIP. But the JPD reports that "murders are down," however that doesn't include CPD jurisdiction murders nor shootings where the victims survived. Smoke and mirrors. Nothing will change, ever, as the culture won't change.
CPD has worked 9 homicides this year. All homicides are independently tracked by WLBT on their site. Right now, homicides actually are down 40%, but that number will fall as the year goes on. Homicides could only really be down half if there were no more for the rest of the year. But that is still some progress. And to be fair, they have done a real good job of finding the suspects and charging them this year. Jackson is still #1 in America according to WLBT site.
It’s sad that people have so little disregard for life that killing someone is so easy.
As long as the Jackson population keeps shrinking, and it will, the number of murders should decrease.
