The Ridgeland Police Department issued the following statement.
In an effort to protect this investigation and apprehend the suspect in a timely fashion; we chose not to release any information on his identity. Sunday, during this investigation, Ivory James Welch III, the son of one of the victims, Ida Welch, was developed as our suspect.
An arrest warrant was obtained and the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force began searching for Welch. Welch managed to get to Arizona before being located by Troopers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Arizona State Troopers attempted to apprehend Welch and he fired upon the Troopers and was fatally wounded in the gunfight.
This investigation is a great example of how teamwork in law enforcement, as well as a great relationship with our media outlets, affords us swift justice for a grieving family. This horrific event will have a lasting effect on this family, the officers involved in this investigation as well as our brothers in Arizona law enforcement.
Special thanks to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Other agencies may have been involved in this apprehension and officer involved shooting. This is the information that we have available at this time.

This outcome is the best for all concerned-
1:34 The only better outcome would have been his demise before he killed 3 family members.
Some Mother's Day.
This man killed his mom and sisters on Mother's Day?
Police responded to a request for welfare check yesterday. They have not released a time of death yet. Could've been yesterday or several days before.
This is so tragic. Prayers to the family members.
Let me guess - loser son shows up demanding money from the mother to support his druggie, thuggie lifestyle, the sisters try to intervene, and he goes off and kills them all. It's happened before.
Murder your mother and two sisters on Mother's Day Weekend. AMF
Damn, That's some great police work!
Well Mississippi made it to Fox News nationally again for wrong reasons
While what he did is unforgivable I appreciate his being fiscal responsible and pulling the trigger when faced by armed individuals.
Waiting on an article by Shad telling us how much the state saved by not having to house this miscreant for the next 48 years.
