The Parable of the Prodigal Son is known to all but forgotten is its second part. The late Dr. Frank Pollard called it the Parable of the Whining Christian in the 1995 sermon posted below. Dr. Pollard described how envy and self-pity filled the elder son as he hid behind a wall of self-righteousness that made him no better than his prodigal brother. Enjoy the short lesson as Dr. Pollard says more in twelve minutes than do the preachers who sermonize for an hour.

I rarely see comments on Dr. Pollard's sermons posted on JJ, but I have to chime in that this is spot on. The whole point of this parable is supposed to be the older brother. Too many seminary-educated pastors totally miss that.
I enjoyed this and appreciate the enlightenment.
i think there are several points to this parable. one is the younger son repents and comes to his senses and has the courage to go home and face his father and say he is not worthy to be called his son! how many times i sin and waller in myself loathing and feel the same. it is said the father was looking in the distance when he sees the son and runs towards him. Our Father in Heaven looks for us to return but we must sincerely repent.
for me the older son has a natural response and I see my own tendencies in both brothers.
thanks for sharing this Sermon and well done Dr. Pollard.
