Mayor Doubles Down Against Judge Wingate

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba doubled down on his remarks about the Jackson water system even  though a federal judge said he may have spread "misinformation."

Mayor Lumumba announced at a press conference last week that United Healthcare funded the purchase of $100,000 of water filters.  Hizzoner said the filters will be provided to the more vulnerable members of Jackson's population such as the elderly and pregnant women since they might not be confident of the water's safety for "a few more months" due to its using a soda ash system that "clumps" in the Mississippi heat and humidity.  The Mayor said a lime slurry slush system would be preferable for the treatment of Jackson's water.  Just in case anyone got the wrong idea , the Mayor said "It hasn't been demonstrated that our water system is in fact, dangerous."  Small comfort to those who heard his immediately preceding remarks.  Video of press conference.

U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate supervises the stipulated order and receivership managing the Jackson water system.  He saw the press conference and ordered Hizzoner to appear in his courtroom today:

Set Hearing: Status Conference set for 6/21/2023 10:00 AM in Courtroom 6A (Jackson) before District Judge Henry T. Wingate. On June 14, 2023, the Mayor of the City of Jackson, Mississippi, called a press conference to announce the City's distribution of free water filters to a certain class of citizens, who might be harmed by Jackson's alleged poor water quality. The Mayor stated that these filters would be free and obtainable from United Healthcare. The Mayor further advised the public that processing efforts of the drinking water are underway, and should show improvement in a few months. This court is concerned whether the Mayor's comments comport with the progress that has been made on water quality by the efforts of the Interim Third Party Manager, Ted Henifin. Concerned, then, that the Mayor's comments may have misinformed the public as to the current status of Jackson's water quality, and the alleged "danger" he discussed owing to the alleged presence of various chemicals, this Court hereby ORDERS a status conference on these matters. The Mayor is hereby directed personally to attend. Additionally, the Interim Third Party Manager is also ordered to attend in person this status conference.
However, Mayor Lumumba stood by his comments yesterday at a press conference while blaming Health Department notices in a response submitted to Judge Wingate yesterday:

During the press conference, the Mayor discussed the fact that the City’s drinking water was not dangerous, however, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH)requires precautionary notices3 to be distributed to all customers due to the City’s incomplete efforts to optimize corrosion control.

WHEREFORE,  PREMISES  CONSIDERED,  Defendant  City  of  Jackson, respectfully requests that this Court take notice of this Response and its attached exhibits.

Stay tuned.

Kingfish note: What happened is Mayor Lumumba showboated last week as he took a gratuitous swipe at the Water Receiver.  When this website reported the coverup of the EPA emergency order in 2021, Mayor Lumumba told anyone who would listen the water was completely safe.  The Health Department was sending out the same notices then it is now.  However, the Mayor just couldn't help himself and had to preen at everyone else's expense last week.  Judge Wingate just happened to notice what happened and told the Mayor to come explain himself.  Caught, Hizzoner tried to be slick and pass off blame to the Health Department.

Chowke the narcissist is about to get his bottom spanked in federal court. A U.S. district court judge is not the same as one of the local blessing judges that he can intimidate.

Ending every response with "right?," and interrupting Judge Wingate won't go over well.

I would pay $1,000 to see Chowke get held in contempt, with a fine and a little time-out in jail, which would ironically be the Madison lock-up where federal prisoners are held.

Well, the Mayor's people has been waging a Cold War against the Receiver. They were really not happy on using the call center in Pearl. Never mind it was established, experienced, and a decent list of corporate clients. Better to just create one from scratch, hire the friends, train them from scratch, then replace half in 90 days because they didn't know what the hell they were doing. Never mind what the water system needs is revenue and revenue now!. They were mad when Tarq was fired as well. That was their little spy into the operation. The Receiver and Jacobs have been bringing back people who knew how to run the water system but were run off by several administrations. That sparked their ire as well. The presser was a jab at the new management but they didn't count on Judge Wingate taking action.

I suspect the Mayor will politely present what he stated in his response. Judge Wingate will point out everyone needs to be on board, and he will admonish the administration. Keep in mind Tori Martin tried to get Henifin added as a party to the stipulated order a few months ago, presumably so the city could go after him if need be, but Judge Wingate said hell no and pointed out the Receiver works directly for him and no one else. Period.

The issue is this… Lumumba is an absolute idiot and isn’t capable of telling the truth or accepting fault. This is one reason he isn’t liked or respected by successful people.

"They were mad when Tarq was fired as well."

Ah, I had wondered why his face was no longer on the JXN Water website.

I can’t wait to see the mayor tear into Judge Wingate and tell him to stay out of the city’s business.

Shok Way will be unable to restrain himself at the hearing. He has to be the one in CHARGE!

Chokwe is a professional code switcher. He'll yes sir and no sir his way out of the court room and go right back into his jive as soon as he clears the courthouse threshold.

10:06......I cannot for the life of me fathom why people like you continue to defend this "Mayor" when the city that he supposedly leads continues to deteriorate on a daily basis!!!!! It's as though you want Jackson to fail. What other explanation is there when he continues to make a bad situation much worse with his arrogance?!?!?

Y’all are acting like lumumba is the only politician who gets in public feuds with judges.

I bet the majority of y’all would even vote for a politician who meets that description. Glass houses…..

I don't vote for Democrats so no.

I think Lumumba is the one who should be joined as a party to this action.

Lumumba should be in jail for what he’s done to this city!!

So Chowke and the water czar are no longer besties? I have no doubt that from day 1 that Chowke assumed (wrongly) that he could control the water czar.

"Shok Way will be unable to restrain himself at the hearing. He has to be the one in CHARGE!"

That is due to his being The Lawyer who not only Knows the Law but Is the Law.

As one considers these matters, remember two facts.
1. His daddy was an avowed Marxist.
2. The mayor is an avowed Marxist.

Who is TARQ?

I’m sure he’ll appeal the decision and take it to the Supreme Court.

TARQ the NARQ

11:55 is spot on!

I'm sure Judge Wingate will be real impressed by the fact that the city filed a response to a status conference notice.

Wingate should open the hearing with the pledge of allegiance, give Lil Choke a black ski mask to hide in.

@12:26 PM - To add to your list, he is someone that not only refuses to recite our Pledge of Allegiance, but sadly leaves the room when it takes place.

@2:47 PM Excellent idea! Bravo!

The mayor seems to have a hard time getting along with people in general.

Did lumumba even show up today?

Wonder who supplied the 100,000 worth of water filters and at what price? Was the price competitive?

Anonymous said...

Looks like Chokeway wins this round. At least until Dr. Edney rescinds the health warning for pregnant women and young children.

Anonymous said...

7:48 - If you'd pay even minimum attention, you'd know the filters were donated by an insurance company.

Anonymous said...

@9:32 - I have to agree with this one. Ted had to admit in open court that Chokeway did not make any factual misstatements. Should have asked for an apology, but I don't think Wingate would have given it to him.

When requested to coordinate communications with the Receiver in order to avoid potential misunderstandings by the citizenry, Lumumba refused. Ironic considering just days ago he was trying to strong arm Pete Perry into agreeing to the same approach.

Lumumba is not in charge of the water system in any way. That was reinforced this week. Just being summoned to Federal court means Mayor Gumflapper lost.

Lumumba is incompetent. Lumumba is a failure.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
