Mayor Declares State of Emergency

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued the following statement.

Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has declared a local emergency after severe storm conditions early Friday morning caused substantial damage in the City of Jackson.

A band of severe thunderstorms on the early morning hours of June 16 generated straight-line winds of up to 80 miles per hour, knocking down trees and causing power outages for many residents. The strong winds also caused significant damage to structures throughout the city, such as traffic signals and the Public Safety Communications and Information Building.

As a result, the City of Jackson will need additional assistance beyond its city personnel to remove trees and repair traffic signals and city facilities.

An emergency is defined as “any occurrence, or threat thereof, whether natural, technological, or man-made, in war or in peace, which results or may result in substantial injury or harm to the population or substantial damage to loss or property.”

The emergency order is effective immediately and will be reviewed at the next regular scheduled meeting of the City Council.

Did he just get back in town? It’s a day late and a (Fed relief) dollar short. Yesterday was treacherous DOR anyone trying to drive in Jackson: trees down in the ROW; lights working/not working/blinking - often following one another; only visible LEO for traffic control was UMMC police on State.

The mayor has decimated the city’s ability to respond but rides to the rescue via a declaration.

A city the size of Jackson needing help to cut trees and fix stop lights. Pathetic. Funny how all the neighboring cities are, you know, getting to work cleaning up and not looking for help

Max recorded wind gust 62 MPH. Doubt the Gumflapper has actual proof of anything beyond that. Remember, this is the CLOWN that led the nation to believe that OBC actually flooded.

Not making light of what may be a serious situation in some locations, but this "mayor" loves to declare a "State of Emergency" more than he enjoys telling the national press that all of Jackson's problems are caused by racists and white flight.

Jackson IS an emergency.

Mayor Lumumba is a state of emergency.

Why is there suddenly a shortage of personnel? Should the gubnor send the National Guard in with chain saws? I thought it was just the PD that the mair has short-changed.

Don't tell the national weather service that there were 80 mph winds in Jacktown. They actually have scientific ways to determine such stuff.

Breaking: EPA sending 600 high-dollar Stihl chain saws to Jackson. No accounting for them will be required.

It's been an emergency since Danks left.

Don’t believe Jackson has a traffic signal repairman on staff. Some lights have been out over a year. State of emergency is due to managerial incompetence.

"As a result, the City of Jackson will need additional assistance beyond its city personnel to remove trees and repair traffic signals and city facilities."

Actually the city's need for help to repair traffic lights is the result of the city's failure to have anyone on staff who is capable to repairing traffic lights. This "emergency" was totally predictable, and therefore self-inflicted.

Is there any kind of situation that the city can handle without outside assistance?

Rolling Fork and Silver City got on their hands and knees but did not have to beg for help. Help came out of love and RESPECT for people of these delta towns. Get YOUR a$$ out there and lead by example for once.

I am surprised Kingfish has not made a post yet about the long swath of I20 and I55 that are without lighting. Those tall expensive lights all along the interstate from the stack to Clinton are out and I'm told that MDOT is tired of replacing the copper wiring that keeps getting stolen. We are talking about a major interstate, with non-existent lane lines in spots with no lighting. Treacherous.

The road is totally invisible at night if it rains. I know this is not related to the storms of this week, but it is a miracle there are not wrecks every night along that stretch.

I grew up in Fondren (before it was cool) just east of the RR tracks
Lived in Jackson all my life except for college until 4 years ago.
My observation now is while there were always bad parts of town,
The whole town now is bad..streets, traffic lights pitiful maintenance
City services that were taken for granted are absent.
Chuck Sucks!

Chowke hoping that his declaration will bring in some more of the federal/state free money. Right?

I think there's a significant amount of citizens without power and it's hot as hell. I think Jackson may need help, but no more than anyone else so what really is the process to identify elderly and people with meds that need to be on ice? It was serious for anyone out early yesterday and straight wind at 62 is crazy. Shit is down everywhere. If no emergency declaration comes from the state, what happens after 2,3,4,days?

Meanwhile the adjacent cities are just working to get everything back working and not wasting time with declaring states of emergencies. Chokwe is all about “look at me”, and that’s the issue. It’s not like Jackson is the only area without power and trees down, he just wants someone to feel bad for him.

I know of a mayor who refused to meet with a President when the President came to town. The narcissist mayor was more interested in a possible mention from CNN for snubbing the nation's leader than in meeting with the President to appeal for help.

The State of Emergency should extend at least through the end of the Mayor’s term.

numerous fools who have not noticed the 55 Kroger gas station closed for two days as if it’s for fun. we just had a serious weather emergency. I’ve no use for Jxn govt but come on.

9:49 - ummm…. Kroger is not the only gas station in Jackson. Far from it.

Not even sure why I read these comments on this blog, but y’all suck. There are 30,000 customers without power in Hinds county and y’all can fuck right of off and fuck this shit blog

"I know of a mayor who refused to meet with a President when the President came to town."

Even more foolish than that was the president's decision to travel to Jackson in the first place.

Anonymous said...

Somebody should declare a state of confusion

Anonymous said...

This mayor is a total fraud and isn’t capable of telling the truth. Only one thing matters to him and that’s the color of your skin. Get out of here mayor. We love it when you’re not in town.

Kingfish said...

What exactly is the Mayor supposed to do about restoring power?

Suppose he did have half a dozen signal techs. What can they so when those lights have no power supply? This is ALL in the hands of Entergy. The city is clearing roads where they need to be cleared. That is about all it can do right now besides providing aid such as cooling stations.

Other areas don't have power as well. Look at that energy outage map from yesterday. Quite a bit of homes in Madison didn't have power. SW part of Hinds County and Clinton didn't have power either.

Anonymous said...

As implied above, this mayor is a public beggar who prefers federal help to state help and has tried to blame all traffic light failures on weather when he has some responsibility. Race begging and race mongering are not substitutes for practical leadership.

Nevertheless, a hot humid climate that produces both prolific tree growth and wet windy storms are not beneficial to pole and line power distribution. Getting more lines under ground can help in some subdivisions, when those costs are weighed against cost of disruption.

Surely you're not saying that 100% of the non-functioning signals are only so because they lack power.

The alleged mair is as nonfunctional as this alleged blog.

Sad to see a good city go to crap; main causes seem to be the mair and the nonfunctional city council (except for stokes, perhaps).

Is the purpose of this blog to defuse anger from those who might want to have changes for the better?

And since you know who I am, you can discard this comment, mr "kingfish"

Per N’side Sun, he can’t even get the rfp issued for the 1% committee to commission their study on the city’s streets. Srsly, the lede is “MONTHS LATER — Commission waiting on city to hire consultant.”

I know he rode his father’s coattails into office. And say what you’re thinking about Senior, but I’m gonna tell you from my experience and research that this apple did not come from this tree.

Junior was no more than an opportunist who capitalized on his father’s life, death, and legacy. That may sound harsh and shrill, but never for a single second have I thought Chokwe Antar had any of his father’s judgment and pragmatism. It’s like you wouldn’t even know they were father and son.

Anonymous said...

I am not one of the commenters bashing Chuck (this time) but it is pathetic the traffic lights in NE Jxn were still non-functional Sunday.

And if Jackson's state of emergency request is largely the fault of Entergy, why did Queen Mary not form a similar request since Entergy is the provider there too?

Genuinely trying to see the rational justification for Jackson reacting differently if the storm and the providers were basically the same in other counties.

@1:25 am, the comments are the best thing about this blog. Well, except for yours.

So here is how declarations of emergency work with King Antar. True story. Daughters house has service box pulled from house when limb hits pole early Friday. King Antar declares emergency. Daughter has certified, licensed, approved electrician fix service early Friday afternoon. Ready for Entergy right…..not so fast has to be inspected by Jx right? Whoops can’t do it Friday, sat and sundays are off for weekend, can’t work on Juneteenth. So the emergency become four days of BS from Jx. Has he ever thought of an emergency waiver of inspection when repairs are done by certified and licensed people? Hell no.

The incompetence just keeps on rolling

A limb pulled my service box off the house but it still worked. Called a local, very reputable company that declared it an emergency and repaired it that day. They said waiting for a permit would be dangerous given that it takes forever in Jackson. I won't out the company but I was very satisfied with their work. At this point, it's all self help and the City is the enemy.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
