PSC Commish Calls Out Entergy Over Slow Response

Mississippi Central District Public Service Commissioner Brent Bailey issued the following statement.

Central District Public Service Commissioner Brent Bailey has expressed deep concern and disappointment over Entergy Mississippi, LLC’s (EML) response efforts to the recent ongoing storm systems that continue to cause widespread outages in the Central District. The Commissioner has received numerous complaints from residents and businesses throughout his district about the delay in restoring power, which has caused undue hardship and inconvenience for many.

“I am extremely frustrated and disappointed by Entergy Mississippi’s response to the recent storms,” Commissioner Bailey said. “The delay in restoring power has caused significant hardship for their customers and it is unacceptable. We expect EML to take swift action to address this issue and ensure that our communities are not left in the dark for prolonged periods of time in the aftermath of future severe weather events.”

Commissioner Bailey has repeatedly urged EML to improve its response strategy to severe storms and take proactive measures to prevent outages. Despite these efforts, the power company has failed to meet the expectations of their customers, leaving tens of thousands without power for days.

Commissioner Bailey identified a few of the concerns he has, including lack of overall preparation, outsourcing of critical services, reductions in field staff, general maintenance of the grid, vegetation management, and inadequate customer service contributing to lack of customer confidence.

The Commissioner calls on the power company to provide a detailed report on its response to the recent storms and outline steps it will take to improve its overall preparedness, response, and restoration plans while keeping safety as a top priority. The Commissioner has also urged EML to work closely with local officials and community leaders to ensure that residents are kept informed and updated on the progress of power restoration efforts.

“Our job as Commissioners is to hold our utilities and power providers accountable for providing affordable AND reliable service. I will continue to monitor the situation closely, take all necessary steps to ensure that EML responds to my requests, and evaluate additional measures the Commission can pursue to improve utility performance and reliability.”

He's right - Other power companies regularly remove limbs near its lines along their right of ways. Why isn't Entergy and why isn't the PSC holding them accountable for it BEFORE disaster strikes? It must be nice to make over 1 billion dollars each year because the government protects you and then not have to spend the money to maintain right of ways.

Hey, Commissioner, good luck getting those bastards on the phone. They will just tell you to call New Orleans. Entergy sucks.

The Entergy spokesperson reminds me of a combination of Karine Jean-Pierre and Baghdad Bob.

Deviney making a mint of Entergy. They do pretty good work though, I must say.

This is the best reason in the world to vote for Brent Bailey. He's not a "yes man" for any utility company and will stick his neck out for the consumers.

Anonymous said...

Brent Bailey has always been impressed with Brent Bailey. He is just pandering to his base, and I am considered one of his base. They haven't been slow to respond and if I were Entergy or a lineman for Entergy I would be pissed at his remarks, and I am no fan of Entergy at the corporate level. Southern Pine hasn't been any faster, but yet no comment. It's Mississippi summer hot and people are uncomfortable. These storms are unprecedented outside of a hurricane.

day four of no electricity...have only seen one entergy truck and it was on 55 going north.

Considering the trees along right of ways in my NEJackson neighborhood that Entergy has had butchered to provide clearance, I don't think @1:00 PM has a clue about what is or is not getting done.

OK So what is Brent or the PSC going to do via its authority to hold entergy accountable other than issue a self serving press release at this difficult time?

When will you hold hearings? Will you seek to reduce their certificated area? will you introduce competition via net metering?

Anonymous said...

Unprecedented storms? Nope. You must have not lived here very long.

Anonymous said...

A strong letter to follow...

Anonymous said...

I would not call them unprecedented in nature. but the repetitious frequency over such a short time and area was problematic in an uncommon way.

But I hate Entergy and never lost power so bash away.

Lived in Northeast Jackson about 1-1/2 years Had 4 outages all contributed to like of preventive maintenance on east north side drive. Lived on MS Gulf Coast and in Hattiesburg for 40 years. Went through 6 hurricanes. 2 were major. Quick response by utilities. They received national awards for quick response. Here I have been without power for 83 hours. On EML website they state I have power. When I report outage they say I have power. Yet my entire neighborhood of approximately 300 have no power. EML could learn a lot from the southern utilities. They must be held accountable by the PSC and the PSC needs to communicate to the public that accountability. Follow thru by PSC must hold EML accountable. The outage prior to this one was contributed to a tree down on north side drive. Outage was 20 hours. Took 12 hours before anyone showed up to cut tree.

For the record, nobody is mad at linemen and we all appreciate their work! However, it is fair to question and want answers from a company when you are almost 84 hours without power and there is no communication as to when you may get it back. The outage map is useless as many of the areas showing red have power and some showing green do not. They got caught with their pants down and now want everyone to throw them a parade for a terrible response plan.

I called Entergy 6 times in December about a dying pine about to take out our crossover transmission line. They are going to send someone out. I threatened to drop it myself, they said they’d send someone out

Fast forward to Friday; entire top took out the transmission line

Anonymous said...

I’ve heard this has been on the Katrina type level as far as damage done over the area. Taking that into account, I understand the delay. But their communication has been non existent.

Anonymous said...

So some of you consider the issuance of a press release to be action??? Just another pandering politician.

Anonymous said...

Haley Fisackerly (President of Entergy MS) is too busy working on his new home in bridgewater and attending the ballet to worry with this.

Anonymous said...

PSC is quick to jump on complaints about AT&T. I don’t know what it is about Entergy that gets them a pass. I don’t know Mr. Bailey but as a constituent of the Northern District Commissioner, I have found he couldn’t care less about the service Entergy provides residents. Customer service is atrocious. If your bill seems low they assume your meter is malfunctioning. They change out the meter then “estimate” what they believe you owe for the last few months. It’s extortion. I’m waiting for Mr. Presley to ring my doorbell and ask for my vote.

You can’t fault the linemen. This falls directly at the feet of managers.

Anonymous said...

Entergy gives most of its employees every other Friday off - not the hard-working linemen, of course just the front office types. I wonder if last Friday when the storm hit was one of the "off days" & fewer employees contributed to a delayed response.

Anonymous said...

"I’ve heard this has been on the Katrina type level as far as damage done over the area. Taking that into account, I understand the delay. But their communication has been non existent."

If that's the case why aren't there power company trucks from all over the south in here helping get the power back up ?

Anonymous said...

It would be hard to find a government agency that lies more than Entergy. Entergy is an arrogant monopoly and their word means nothing.

Entergy sucks. We have light in our parking lot they are supposed to maintain and we pay them monthly to do so. They send someone out and ask us what type of bulb goes in the light. I told them not sure I don't have a bucket truck to see you are the ones with the bucket trucks. So the light has been out for 6 months we are at a standoff. Thinking maybe they should have put that in the computer or something. Idiots

Anonymous said...

Beaver Cleaver would sooner change two Wallys than the PSC change Entergy

Anonymous said...

Thank you Brent Bailey!
I hope there is a hearing about this showing that Haley Fisackerly honestly isn't fit to run Entergy. Why hasn't the said one damn thing? FIRE HIM!!

Anonymous said...

"Considering the trees along right of ways in my NEJackson neighborhood that Entergy has had butchered to provide clearance, I don't think @1:00 PM has a clue about what is or is not getting done."

A blind person could ride around Jackson, particulary older areas such as Belhaven and Fondren, and see the limbs and trees and vegetation growing above and in some cases through the power lines. ON my street, it's doubtful Entergy has ever had the trees "butchered." God forbid a limb or tree get removed because some dumb homeowner planted it too near the right of way years ago.

Anonymous said...

I live in Fondren and walk a 4 mile route that covers most of the neighborhood. My dad worked for an electrical utility and I worked on line crews in the summer. One crew could get the whole neighborhood back on in less than a day. It’s not that much damage. A lot of the fixes would be temporary to get lines back up and hot with permanent fixes later—but speed is what counts post storm. Most of the outages started Friday morning. I saw trucks from Louisiana surveying damage in the neighborhood this morning, but not the actual work crews. This is unacceptable.

Brent Bailey is a good guy. He will get my vote. But much of this letter is Brent wanting to show he "stands up for the consumer". It's primarily for show. The electric and gas providers in this state absolutely OWN the 3 public service commissioners.

Entergy linemen do a good job. But that company overpays a lot of admin folks and is bloated in many departments. It's a good company, but they need streamlining. They have some incredible employees, some average employees, and some dead weight. Much like the government, nobody cares enough to cut the dead weight. I know Entergy employees that work from home (since covid). They spend 8 hours per week working and the rest of the time hunting, fishing, mowing grass, etc.

Fisackerly isn't a bad guy. But he's way overpaid and is an empty suit. Typical high level CEO type where everyone else does the work and they walk around half-clueless.

Bailey will yell and scream to get votes. Entergy will do nothing about it. Or maybe Entergy will spend a bunch of money overpaying for some program designed to improve service, and the customer will pay for it all, while nothing improves. So be careful what you wish for.

In Entergy's defense, everybody wanted their power back on in 2 hours. It wasn't feasible. There were far too many outages.

Anonymous said...

@3:08 pm, I'm guessing we could kind of see Katrina coming, knew it was going to be bad, etc.
These storms hit fast and hard (that's what she said).. Not taking up for Entergy by any means, and their line workers are solid hard working people. Just trying to see it from both sides.

Anonymous said...

I wrote the 4:01 p.m. comment. After writing that I remembered a conversation I had with a mid-career Entergy employee last fall.

He said there had recently been a lot of forced retirements in the company. The retirements caused the company to lose a substantial amount of institutional knowledge and experience on storm response. My impression was he wasn't talking about linemen. He was talking about management that organizes and directs the response. The person was nervous about the company's ability to effectively respond to the next big storm.

Those fears came to fruition over the weekend. The storms we've had were not unprecedented. This was not an ice storm or hurricane. We're not talking about rebuilding the entire infrastructure in a neighborhood. There are a lot of quick fixes that could get most of the power back on a lot faster.

This was the kind of storm where in the past, the response would have been much quicker. Something weird is going on here. Based on posts I've seen on Nextdoor, people from all over the metro realize this.

The PSC should investigate whether Entergy as currently structured is competent in storm response. This was not a 'big one'. What happens if there is a major hurricane or ice storm? Can Entergy respond?

Anonymous said...

Hard to get your lights back on when outages started Friday and we had round after round of serious storms through last night. I'm sure there are OSHA rules, even in times like these, where you can't climb light poles within a certain timeframe and distance to a lightning strike. Hell, the NCAA had a 2-hour lightening delay at USM and it didn't even rain. I agree with the poster(s) this is just a PR stunt. He probably text someone at Entergy something akin to "No hard feelings, I have to do it to stay relevant as well as remind everyone I am here. I haven't put out anything in a while. I'm sure you understand".

Anonymous said...

At least they can send out bills correctly, collect, and cut-off for non-payment.

Anonymous said...

There really aren't any trees along I55 west frontage between Briarwood and Canton Mart Rd that could've taken down lines to leave all our businesses powerless 4 days running. Slow/no response is not acceptable.

Anonymous said...

4:05, the Commissioer has until November to prove if he is serious about doing something about Entergy's issues or just another politician. In the meantime, at least he is calling them out.

Anonymous said...

It’s pretty difficult for Entergy to work on utility infrastructure that Entergy owns, because they do not do that anymore. They let contractors do the work. When you sub work out, you get a different response than when you do the work yourself. I am extremely thankful for Entergy lineman and lineman in general, but in Entergy’s case it’s: Safety First, let other people do all of our work.

Anonymous said...

Entergy got power back on in about 23 hours, and I have no complaint about this amount of outage time.

On the other hand. . .
They sent me a survey via email after the June 10 outage in Madison. They wanted to know if I "would recommend Entergy, if one were give the choice, to a friend of colleague?" I wrote back "no." In the comments I complained about being forced to subsidize a poorly run and inefficient nuclear reactor. Apparently GG runs at 80% capacity when up, but it's also down quite a lot.

Anonymous said...

Not much irritates people more than sitting in a hot, humid, dark, silent house when there’s no power. Brent is simply responding to reports from some hot, sweaty, pissed off constituents suffering through that experience. The outage map was absolutely overwhelming and the damaged trees looked like a 15 mile wide weak tornado had passed through. Subsequent storms slowed the response, but Entergy, as always, is responding admirably to the situation. Those of you who complain yet have never been in a bucket truck at 3 a.m. can go pound sand.

Anonymous said...

Seven trucks sat on lot at fas gas at Florence byram road waiting on Entergy to come give then go ahead. Weather was beautiful. After waiting 3-4 hours on lot Entergy supervisor came and turned them loose. They were from Illinois and Kentucky. They went to work and storms and tornado moved in and they had to stop. They could have been through if Entergy had come 3 hours earlier. Poor handling by Entergy. Where were they 3 hours earlier while this valuable resource was sitting on lot.

God bless all the linemen working overtime.

They had restored power to thousands, only to have another round of storms destroy what they had repaired.

It is not their fault !

Anonymous said...

I live in Reunion in Madison county. I have absolutely no complaints about Entergy or the other providers.

Anonymous said...

This is total BS. But, it is an election year.

I have talked to multiple linemen who said this was the worst since 2005. I also know that towns, especially Clinton, regularly chastise Entergy (Devinney) for butchering the trees yearly to prevent this. This is Brent playing politics.

Now, Fisackerly? No, I can't defend him. He has had a good ride considering his qualifications (none).

Anonymous said...

Where are the Entergy trucks? I drove for several hours Saturday and again on Sunday and did not see a single Entergy truck. I have been without power for over 85 hours and the only communication I have received from Entergy is an email on Friday morning stating my power had been restored. Meanwhile the President and CEO of Entergy has been attending the Ballet. He should resign immediately!!

Anonymous said...

1:32 is close to dead right- Brent is pandering to the Political side of things during Election Year. I'm not a Customer nor a fan of Energy. That being said there is a frequency as well as size of the damage done. Actually 4 days in a row which is pretty much unheard of. The linemen do a very good job with their end but how does Ad Min keep coming up with the Seasonal Discounts, Waivers etc? Maybe that money would be better spent on ROW maintenance? So much for Aunt Betsy's flowers & Yard trees--deliver Electricity..

Anonymous said...

I wouldn’t care if I was the last one in town to get my electricity back on, but I would just like Entergy to communicate something to me. When I called them today twice (because they don’t answer the phone over the weekend…can’t believe no one answers the phone during a so called “Katrina type storm”), they tell me “we are sorry. We don’t know when you will get power”. Just give me a hint when I might get power. The outage map was wrong all weekend, their automated system continues to say since Friday that I have power (and I don’t). I haven’t received any automated text messages for updates like I get in past outages. It’s clear with all the outages over last year in my area that preventive tree maintenance is being neglected. This is all on upper management. They’ve worked from home since COVID. They are all on vacations, ball games, hunting just like previous poster said. I can’t believe how little these guys actually work. I rank this poor leadership and response right up there with the ineffectiveness of the City of Jackson. Entergy is a close 2nd behind Jackson administration. Let that sink in Entergy. I just compared you to City of Jackson leadership. You should be embarrassed.

What have we learned from this?
If you were without power.. Will you get a small generator / back up fuel to run your needed equipment - to salvage your cold items or will you keep bitching?

6:25 PM’s post of events sums up Entergy. A monopolistic bureaucracy specializing in inefficiency with arrogant white collar employees that don’t care at all about people.

6:30 PM, you can thank the developer for all of that underground you enjoy, not Entergy.

Anonymous said...

I never saw one entergy crew or truck in my area. It was chain electric and B n B electric that got ours back on. They’re relying on too many subs. Years ago there would have been an army of entergy trucks all around. I know a few linemen and they spend half the year working in other states while entergy cashes in.

Anonymous said...

Delay paying your entergy bill and see how fast they get your shit turned off. If only we could have multiple providers in the same territory storm outages would get repaired 10x quicker. Competition is a good thing. A company with zero competition is an empire.

This reminds me of when the Social Media CEOs were chastised by the US House committee which then did nothing to hurt the companies.
Why? Because 60%+ of the US House Committee members were receiving donations from these same companies.

The Committee hearings were nothing but a show. If the PSC actually does something to punish Entergy then I'll believe this guy. Otherwise, he is just a hypocritical showman.

Entery's Web site to make any type of change to your account or to link any other accounts that you're responsible for is totally worthless. Whomever is responsible for their WEB development and most any technology available to their account holders should be racked, flogged and fired.

I talked to a very nice lady in Texas today that honestly tried to help me with the issues I was having and she gave up. She apologized and said she had no clue why she couldn't make it work.

I guess Hee Haw is responsible for their technology as well.

@10:35 The PSC is not well run. The Public Utilities Staff is pretty good however. But Brandon Presley runs the show, and we've already seen his communist ways with the domestic violence deposit waiver (he got his butt handed to him in court on that one). That "rule" should have never been introduced in a free country.

Anonymous said...

Not a 'yes man'??? He certainly was when he didn't accomplish anything with a recent dispute I had with the gas company. Backed up the gas company all the way. And let it slip that his 'guy' he had working on my issue was none other than the guy I had dealt with at the gas company a few years ago who now works for the PSC. Lost my vote.

Entergy sucks for sure, but the PSC, at least the Northern and Central Commissioners, isn't going to do anything but self-promote.

Not sure about that 8:51 PM.

I think Mara retired way before these storms.

Some outages are the results of power consumers planting trees in or near the ROW. Don’t do that. Entergy should cut down and remove those tree. Drive around the neighborhoods and main arteries and you see that.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
