Will the Senate Judicary B Committee protect Buddy today? Buddy is a sweet dog that was set on fire by an 12 year-old child last year. Unfortunately, the little demon could not be prosecuted because of his age last year. However, Senate bill #2261 aims to fix that problem but it may die in committee today.
State Senator Angela Hill's bill states:
(c) The youth court shall order that a child adjudicated delinquent receives a psychiatric evaluation and counseling or treatment for a length of time as prescribed by the youth court. The cost of any evaluation, counseling and treatment shall be paid by the offender's parent or guardian, or by the state if the offender is a ward of the state, upon order of the youth court, up to a maximum amount that is no more than the jurisdictional limit of the sentencing court. The youth court shall hold the offender's parent or guardian in contempt under Section 43-21-509 if the parent or guardian willfully does not follow the recommended treatment for the offender. Text of bill.
Such cruelty is all too often the gateway to more barbaric crimes. The bill is a step in getting kids such as the one who burned Buddy for fun the psychiatric help they obviously need.
State Senator Joey Fillingane is the Chairman of the committee and responsible for bringing it up for a vote today.

I'd rather they do something to treat the 15 year old robbers and killers in Jackson like adults. Animal abuse is terrible but it should be low on the priority list compared to the lawless third world city masquerading as a functioning capitol.
You support Luke Woodham. Got it.
The little bastid should be punished with the same torture he inflicted on an innocent animal. Mama can pay the doctor bills.
How someone treats animals says everything about them.
It seems like we should be able to "walk and chew gum at the same time". We can adequately make an example out of little shits who mistreat animals and sentence 15 year old murderers to a date with "Old Sparky" all at the same time....
If any child would do this to a small, helpless animal it’s probably just a matter of time before they get older and bolder and attack somebody.
Makes me sick to my stomach!! KF, you nailed it with your Luke Woodham comment!!
You will generally see comments such as the first one made by those defending animal cruelty or dog fighting. They are perfectly ok with it.
How is Buddy doing? The kid that did this is a Psychopath. Not sure what they could do to punish him, except put him in a mental institution. I got my dog from the Jackson animal shelter. Cost me 40 bucks and 1000 in vet bills because of heartworms and other issues. Now she is healthy and the best dog I have ever had. Money well spent.
Little demons grow up to be big demons.
My guess is the future serial killer who did this to Buddy will maim and kill a human in the very near future. We will see if the government has any nuts to make things like this a high felony.
If you abuse animals or park in handicapped parking spaces, that’s about all I need to know about you.
Please remove yourself from society.
This a gateway crime that needs to not only have a balanced degree of punishment/shame but also needs to have the child perpetrator evaluated by psychiatric help and monitored through portions of their adult years. Moreover their family life needs scrutiny as well. Intercept the problem to hopefully stymie any abuse to humans. BWC
That's a pretty blanket statement Kingfish. Some people are just more worried about a murder rate that leaves Chicago in the dust than a bill that makes people go to counseling on the taxpayer's dime with no real punishment. A few sessions of court ordered counseling are not going to fix the toxic broken environments most of these kids come from.
I hate that so many people who proclaim to be animal lovers will lose their minds over lost dogs or abused dogs but those same folks have almost no concern for cats in the same scenarios.
It is unbelievable that someone would do this to this dog, or any other animal.
arson. enuresis and animal cruelty
three legs of the serial killer tripod.
Look at 10:51 comment and KF called this idiot out. Luke Woodham started out abusing animals. Luke background, from someone I knew that helped the family before the shooting, grew up abused by his father. The father then left his wife and children destitute. My friend and their church had to help them just survive. So many people chime in about how it’s ok to abuse animals and little or nothing should be done to them criminally. If you don’t put strict laws on animal abuse, you let these people progress to violence against people. These abusers are sick, angry and want to hurt anyone or anything.
12:09 : Well believe it ! And it was a teen aged boy who has suffered zero in all of this. He set a living thing on fire ! And goes back to his life like he kicked an ant bed.
Dog people and their “furbabies” are the cringiest creatures on the planet.
BTW if you die of a stroke alone with your furbababies, they will consume your corpse without hesitation.
Maybe it was an accident? I mean, I wanna hear what the dog has to say.
@ 1:51 - you sound just Matt Friedeman, always admonishing people for having pets and being overly concerned with what happens after you die...
12:31, So bedwetters are future serial killers? Can you please post some kind of citation to a study that backs that up?
If I die alone at home I really don't care if my dogs eat my corpse. I won't be needing it anymore. That will keep them alive until someone does a welfare check.
If enuresis is the gateway to mass killing, then every Chihuahua should be put down for being potential killing machines like pit bulls.
These urban legends just don't hold water.
6:19, well put.
Buddy represents all of the underdogs of the world. A sociopath couldn’t even kill his spirit and will to live. May the perpetrator look at this picture everyday to remind him of what he did.
This bill includes cats too. Also, it was presented in committee that the 12 year old offender allegedly has murdered 2 people since he set Buddy on fire, so you're delusional if you don't think animal cruelty is a gateway to violence against humans.

I want to hear the whole story. Was Buddy a neglected pet that was allowed to roam rather than being walked? Most people that are not pet owners do not bother animals unless they become pests or attack. Ill trained animals have a habit of not remaining in their master's yards which reflect on the owner.
This was likely done with an aerosol and lighter, and if the above conditions are true then so be it the fault lies with owner especially if there is a leash law. Keep your animals secure for everyone's safety including their own.
If the kid sought out the animal unprovoked, then he deserves the ire of all the comments. Until there is a healthy respect for life this will be result. One distinction needs to be made, if this kid does grow up to be violent it will likely be a specific criteria that unlocks it.
And now we're censoring anything that isn't dog propaganda.
5:59 : Been living under a rock ? The NUMBER ONE serial killer fun time and has been well documented is animal cruelty. Then bed wetting and a combined disorder resulting from Mommy issues and a perv Uncle.
The little bastard that did this is a kid named Michael Campbell. He has since been changed in the burning death of 12 year old Gaines Coker in Tate County. He has been charged with with capital murder. This kid has also been suspected in the tragic “accidental shooting” of his younger sister. He deserves a slow painful death.
