City Council Takes Stand Against Crime

Jackson City Council President issued the following statement.

Wednesday  January  27,  2021,  City  Council  President  Aaron  Banks  has  scheduled  two  special meetings.    The  first  meeting  will  be  a  special  council  meeting  beginning  at  2:45pm  to  pass resolutions to be taken up at the state and federal levels, please see the  following:

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI SUPORTING AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 97-‐15-‐13, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO INCREASE THE PENALTIES FOR DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM ON PUBLIC STREETS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

RESOLUTION  OF  THE  CITY  COUNCIL  OF  JACKSON,  MISSISSIPPI  SUPORTING  TO  REVISE  THE PENALTY  TO  MAKE  IT  A  FELONY  FOR  THE  BLOCKING  OF  ANY  STREET,  ROAD,  DRIVEWAY, INTERSTATE OR HIGHWAY FOR THE PURPOSE OF DRIFTING.

RESOLUTION  OF  THE  CITY  OF  JACKSON  SUPPORTING  AN  ADDITONAL  ACT  OF  THE  UNITED STATES CONGRESS FOR HAZARD PAY FOR ESSENTIAL WORKERS TO INCLUDE ALL POLICE AND FIRE   PERSONNEL,   ALL   MEDICAL   PERSONNEL,   DISPATCHERS,   EDUCATORS,   BUS   DRIVERS, CAFETERIA  WORKERS,  JANITORS   AND   ALL  ADMINISTRATIVE  SUPPORT  STAFF  IN  PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

The second meeting will be a Law Enforcement Ad-‐Hoc Committee meeting to discuss specific goals that Chief Davis has, to address violent crime in the City of Jackson.  In addition  the Council will ask for an accurate  personnel update in all areas of the department including dispatchers, he amount of active officers patrolling per shift and per day, in comparison to active boots on the ground numbers previously given to the Council.

“It is important that the citizens of Jackson know, that Council and leadership will not turn our head away from the senseless crimes acts of violence and other crimes happening in our city. In order to affectively fight crime, all options must be on the table as we seek solutions. The Jackson Police Department has lost more than 50 sworn officers within one year,  and we are currently operating under extreme shortages.”

"EDUCATORS, BUS DRIVERS, CAFETERIA WORKERS, JANITORS AND ALL ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT STAFF IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS."

What does this have to do with reducing crime in Jackson?

Anonymous said...

JPD is operating under extreme shortages due to the attitude and policies of the elected leadership of Jackson. Leaders should not use that as an excuse considering they caused the shortage.

So only for “purpose of drifting” so drag racing and other reasons to block the road are still okay???

"Resolutions"

That's funnier than the well groomed lil' Mayor's (holistic approach to crime).
I honestly hate to laugh, but everything about my once great town is sad. (but funny, and pathetic at the same time).

But ??? will Stokes call a Sunday afternoon presser and babble some nonsensical words and phrases to his constituency ? Will he wear his cartoon baseball cap with the word STOKES emblazoned on the front ??

Give me a plain oversized Andy Gibson Cowboy Hat any day.

Getting rid of the Hinds County judges that like to bestow "blessings" on the perps would be a good start and go a long way towards reducing crime in Jackson. When I was growing up there is a time I remember when I decided to challenge my parents authority. That was the one and only time I made that mistake. I had a friend who never suffered any consequences for his negative behavior. He soon learned he could do whatever he wanted to, that is until one day the law caught up with him. He spent some time behind bars. THAT changed his attitude. Upon release he turned his life around to be a model citizen.

They asked "What'd ya get, Kid?" and I said...

"Felony Donuts". And they all moved away from me there on the bench. But then when I said they made me pay $50 and pick up some garbage, they all moved back towards me and we had a good time.

I was nodding in agreement until I got to the hazard pay part. If that's due to COVID, forget it. Workers who are worried about COVID need to get vaccinated. Too many people are refusing the vaccine. If they don't want it, fine, but don't pay them extra for refusing it.

I'm totally fine with hazard pay and any other extra pay for JPD cops. They deserve it. Until they're paid more they're going to keep leaving. There are some good ones but they are totally overwhelmed and understaffed.

For the record, yes I live in Jackson, and I vote. In fact, I stood in line with you (Mr. Banks) waiting to vote in November.

Is this a joke? How sad. These people are clueless!

SuPPorting, not SuPorting.....Geez.

Dear Stupid City Council:

You don’t need more laws, you need a judicial system that enforces your current laws. Until your judges and DA aren’t catering to criminals, your streets will NOT be safer.

Sincerely,
Reality

Probably should be a resolution addressing Jackson's David Archie problem.

Anonymous said...

This would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

Anonymous said...

Couldn’t they just pass/amend an ordinance for the City of Jackson, rather than passing a resolution in support of amending state law?

Anonymous said...

Will someone explain to me how a resolution cranked out by the Jackson City Council will 'be taken up at the state and federal level'? Thanks.

FOR THE BLOCKING OF ANY STREET, ROAD, DRIVEWAY, INTERSTATE OR HIGHWAY FOR THE PURPOSE OF DRIFTING.

I guess blocking them for protests is still just fine.

Currently-Nothing.

In a normal school year-A lot

Cedrick Gray, Fredrick Murray, and associates really screwed up Jackson.

Remember when Barksdale offered top dollar to help JPS?

What is drifting,

Anonymous said...

"...for the purpose of drifting."

What the hell does that even mean? Drifting is something you do in a jon boat or inner-tube on the Pearl, headed down toward Monticello, drinking a long-neck.

Anonymous said...

Drifting is a controlled wheel spin or slide in a racing vehicle. It is a technique developed to take turns quickly during racing. It has developed into a type of racing on its own.

It was made famous by the Japanese "Initial D" franchise of games and anime.

"Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I want to get lost in your rock 'n' roll
And drift away." No more says the council.

I feel safer already.

More resolutions, laws, cops, courts won't solve the issues facing Jackson and other cities. The problems lie within the hearts and minds of the masses who have no respect for anyone. It is a fatal disease in more ways than one. And until we are willing to point a finger and call it like it is, well, things will only get worse.

Hinds DA said on tv last night that he hoped to rid Jackson of the stereotype that they are not tough on crime.

Stereotype?

You mean "Fact".

Its a "Fact" that Hinds County is not tough on crime.

I don't know how he is going to fix Tommie's blessings but good luck sir.

First of all, the city council needs to invest in spell-check software for their computers. This would be of great benefit to the alumni of the JPS.

No mention of replacing judges who give out blessings.

Does JPD have enough patrol cars available, even if it is able to put more police officers on patrol?

Anonymous said...

There is a reason they have a patrol officer shortage.

City of Madison officer: Do your job. Probably won't get shot at. If you arrest a criminal, the police chief, judge, and the mayor will back you up.

City of Jackson officer: Policies hamstring you in doing your job. Good chance you might get shot at. If you arrest a criminal, the police chief, judge, and the mayor are likely to side with the criminal (especially if you are a white office arresting a black criminal).

Now you tell me which sounds like a better place to work.

When people see actual video of officers dealing with criminals properly, then they still side with the criminal (Jacob Blake in Kenosha for example), it is no wonder that good officers don't want these jobs. Let's demonize the office and put the criminal's name on a t-shirt or football helmet or statue!

Anonymous said...

Typical Democrat answer to any problem: Let's throw more money at it, surely it will go away". Sheer stupidity.

Anonymous said...

Pure Bullshit. Shooting guns in Jackson is like playing loud music and the laws are already on the books. There is NO enforcement. These idiots make meaningless resolutions for the legislature to do something instead of doing their own jobs. The next generation being bred in Jackson will kill itself
off if they don't escape. Worthless.

@8:07 AM As much as I might agree that spell check would be helpful for the spelling and grammar challenged members of the esteemed Jackson city council
civil servants...spellcheck is actually more geared toward helping the accidental typo for those who otherwise know better...you know "oops"...I'm betting these folk are on a par with the average JPS scholar

Aisle B Bach said...

@9:54 AM as a side note to add some emphasis...when they re worked the roof of the Jackson Medical Mall it was literally littered with bullets...I still have one that I found in my parking spot a couple of years ago...nothing will change because the so called leadership is beholden to its constituency...Jackson is in a death spiral

Anonymous said...

Anyone who be a police officer in 2021 should NOT be allowed to serve. The very fact that you want to constitutes Prima Facie evidence that you should not allowed to serve. You have to be mentally unbalanced to risk life and limb every day and then, if you do your job, it is likely that you will end up fired or in jail. No effing way, Jose!!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with 6:46 and 9:54. I think Jackson needs consequences for flouting the law. We confuse love with enabling bad behavior.

Anonymous said...

Our City political and administrative "leaders" are condeming criminal
activity in the strongest possible terms.

That ought to fix the problem, along with the holistic approach.

Anonymous said...

Is the City Council motto still "snitches get stitches?"

Anonymous said...

Dear Jackson City Council, Mayor, Elected Officials and Business Owners,

Do you realize how many of us get gas before entering Jackson, leave before dark and eat in surrounding areas? This is money lost to your city because of the "perception" of crime.

Get your shit together or it will only get worse.

I know some folks who were tasked to do some roof inspections in West Jackson. Like the previous poster, the inspectors came home with clumps of bullets retrieved from the roofs of buildings.

Perhaps a PSA kind of like "Jackson residents are ask to refrain from discharging firearms into the air" will do some good.

9:47 Or maybe the State curbing monthly gun shows in Jackson? I have yet to see one in Madison County.

8:41 AM
Monthly? Probably you don't see them in Ridgeland or Madison is because neither have a convention center.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
