The World Health Organization said lockdowns should be used only as a last resort after it previously promoted the public health measure. The New York Post reported yesterday:
The World Health Organization has warned leaders against relying on COVID-19 lockdowns to tackle outbreaks — after previously saying countries should be careful how quickly they re-open.
WHO envoy Dr. David Nabarro said that such restrictive measures should only be treated as a last resort, the British magazine The Spectator reported in a video interview.
“We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Nabarro said.
“The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”
Nabarro said that there’s significant harm caused by tight restrictions, particularly on the global economy.
“Lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer,” he said.
He added that lockdowns have severely impacted countries that rely on tourism.
“Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays,” Nabarro told the outlet.
“Look what’s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world. Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”
The UN agency previously warned countries against lifting lockdowns too soon during the first wave of the virus.
“The last thing any country needs is to open schools and businesses, only to be forced to close them again because of a resurgence,” said Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Rest of article.
One is tempted to be sarcastic and respond "now they tell us" but one instead hopes the WHO is changing its policy because it examined lockdowns and their effects. What will the Fondrenites on Nextdoor do now?

The WHO is using Biden's playbook - flip-flop-flip-flop...
Did what they intended to do. Hurt the US economy and Pres Trump.
Mission accomplished. Carry on as you were. China happy.
Anything from anyone is suspect. This country and world is fucked up over what is nothing more than a cold.
So what is it about guidelines for lockdown that justified the headline? Sees to me the reasons for advocating applied before and can apply again for hotspots.
"oops" That's all any non-profit, government funding organization has to say. "oops"
Nevermind the millions who lost jobs.
Cops violently assaulting and murdering unarmed African Americans (and the justifiable protests against systemic racism that followed) basically rendered any lockdowns a moot point.
@8:36 AM - right on! The WHO is a proxy organization for the Chicoms, who invented and spread the Chinese Virus. This is not some conspiracy theory, as the evidence is clear.
Well, WHO can change their tune, NOW, because they're ready for even WORSE "measures".
Get ready for mandatory vaccines, forced isolation of the elderly, Hillary's Dignified Isolation Camps, tracking/tracing which will be criminal to evade, mandatory testing, and anything else which powerful private entities might find PROFITABLE.
Don't take this latest, as evidence that they've finally gotten good sense.
How many people sitting back saying "I told you so".
9:02. wrong. 12-61k per year dead due to flu and colds combined. covid is over 200k.
science is a process. conclusions change. when covid started up in Wuhan little was known. now we know. masks are as good as a vaccine. that’s been proven around the world but not here where some people refuse to listen to covid experts.
thanks to those who refuse to wear one. we are going to be living with it for a lot longer than we need to. again thanks
@10:34
This is about saving human lives. Now is not the time for wild conspiracy theories. Think of the children and the vulnerable. Ask yourself, WWJD?
@10:41
SO very misguided. If we tested and counted deaths for the flu the same way we do for covid, we could easily match the totals. The idea that cases = a positive test using at Ct of 40 results in overcounts and the corresponding death matches. And that's not considering the financial incentives that hospitals have for increasing the numbers of covid.
@10:34
More people will die as a result of the impoverishment of the USA than ever result from covid. We are bankrupting our country to the tune of 6 trillioni so far, and that is money lost that will never be able to support the largess to the third world that we currently support. Estimates are 120 million additional deaths. Think of the children indeed.
The Truth never shies from investigation and never fears a debate. That's why there are some "truths" you aren't allowed to investigate or debate.
@11:24,
I've said it many times before. The can print money for nukes, attack drones, submarines, surveillance, and a "Space Force" they can print it to feed and house us and protect us from the plague.
And dont tell me that's not how it works because if it came from our taxes we wouldn't have national debt or a deficit.
@Calm Down 11:24
"If we tested and counted deaths for the flu the same way we do for Covid"
If anything, we're a lot looser about guessing what's flu-related. They build a model using death certificates for all respiratory/circulatory causes, which involves taking a guess at flu impact on things like pneumonia or congestive heart failure. That's why it's a range, because it's so imprecise, and they model different outcomes for stricter/less-strict criteria.
If we counted Covid deaths the same way we do flu, we'd have an even bigger discrepancy with many more Covid deaths.

@11:51
Sure, we can certainly go further in debt to further our national decline. The reality is that we will be further restrained in that borrowing and compelled to pull back from spending, on all sorts of 'good programs'. Meanwhile, enjoy your social security decreasing and the decline of civilization.
Our government was not established, nor is it equipped, to feed and house you. You can choose to be ignorant of such matters. Reality will educate you.
@12:11
I am not ignorant at all. We print and give trillions to farmers, oil companies, defense contractors, and hundreds of foreign nations. It is passed out like candy to millions of "disabled" and elderly, and children born to non-US citizens.
The largest holders of US Debt are our children and grandchildren and their future children. Our nation has done this for 100 years, since the passing of the Federal Reserve Act. The US Dollar was decoupled during the Nixon Administration from any standard other than the debt the Federal Reserve enters in their secret ledger. I believe you sir, are the one who is ignorant.
12:11 and 1:33, I see a cat fight coming on. Love it when we can discuss things without resorting to name calling.
@1:33
So your solution to an unsound fiscal policy is to conitnue and expand the same bad policy, since it's so awful? I'm not sure that's going to be a solid plan.
11:24 Please provide some verifiable sources for your comment that "... the financial incentives that hospitals have for increasing the numbers of covid". Please list verifiable sources, because you a making a very ignorant statement. Believe it or not, hospitals are NOT being incentivized to to increase the number of Covid patients.
Well, sports fans, mother nature couldn't care less what all y'all say or think, and she will continue exterminating the vermin (us) that are destroying the planet.
China released the virus (accident or not) which has led to massive change in the process of how people vote (right or wrong) which clearly benefits Democrats, Biden, and as a result China. WHO was complicit. Me Chinese...me play joke...
No Really WHO Flips on Lockdown? Who? Right Who? Sorry couldnt resist. Still one of my favorite abbot & castello
It won't matter after election day, competent folks will take over and manage us out of this pandemic.
You people can name and blame China all you want. But China was not in charge of handling the response to Covid-19 in the United States. That embarassing disaster belongs to Donald Trump. And history will record it as a reminder for all future generations.
Yes we were resented with two very hard choices in March. Leave the Country wide open do No preventive measures and the losses would have been 2 Million. Total shut down would have had much less. I've seen some estimates 35-40,000.
Or do what Trump did. We have an economy that is ready to bounce back and I predict will very quickly but we lost 160-170,000 people to get there. (THAT's tough) If we had been in total shut down we would be 18-25% unemployment and the mental status of our country would have even more in the crapper. These were tough decisions to make and I applaud Trump for making them. Its very easy to be a Monday morning QB but in March you be the guy tha shuts doesnt shut down everything
I didn't have a problem with the shut down of travel from China. Whether it did any good are not will be debated for years to come. That is because most of the cases in the USA can be traced to Europe which wasn't shut down until later.
@9:19 pm
My reply didn't post, so I'll try again for you - USA Today, which I'd be you think of as 'reliable'.
The coronavirus relief legislation created a 20% premium, or add-on, for COVID-19 Medicare patients.
We rate the claim that hospitals get paid more if patients are listed as COVID-19 and on ventilators as TRUE.
