U.S. Attorney says presser tips off criminals.
JPD and other law enforcement agencies are taking the fight to the bad guys in Jackson. Chief James Davis announced the commencement of "Operation Unity" at a press conference yesterday.
A company of law enforcement officers from various agencies stood behind Chief Davis as he solemnly promised to work with them to fight crime. Chief Davis said the police could not do much about domestic or personal disputes that turned deadly but would still "saturate the city" to stop those flashing guns and committing crime. He said JPD will look for crime hot spots and those on the most wanted list.
Deputy Chief Eric Hearn announced Operation Unity would begin Tuesday night and "commence" on November 7. He said crime was "too encompassing" for one agency to take on alone. The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Hinds County Sheriff Department, and District Attorney Jody Owens will assist JPD over the next two weeks.
Chief Davis said JPD will promote the slogan "Walk Away, Live Another Day" as a new message to the community. No federal representatives were at the press conference. Chief Davis said the U.S. Attorney does not "put boots on the ground or provide officers" but supports the police in the field making arrests.
U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst said he called Chief Davis several times to discuss Operation Unity but the Chief did not return his call. Mr. Hurst stated in a press release:
Today, Jackson Police Department Chief James E. Davis announced JPD’s ‘Operation Unity’ to saturate the City of Jackson with state and local law enforcement over the next two weeks. I was told about this operation on Friday by one of my federal prosecutors, and I called Chief Davis to advise him against telling criminals in advance about an upcoming law enforcement operation. Chief Davis did not answer nor return my phone call, so I sent him a letter yesterday, imploring him not to hold a press conference before such an operation, as it could put officers’ lives in danger and criminals would simply hide to avoid detection.”
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work closely with JPD and our other partners in order to prosecute violent criminals in Jackson, as we have been doing for the last three years, under Project EJECT. But I pray for our law enforcement and their safety over the next two weeks in Jackson, and I hope that future law enforcement operations will be conducted to have more meaningful, long-term effects.
Stay tuned.

Words fail. I have come to think that the "government" of this city is actually trying to protect the perps who commit all of this crime in this god-forsaken town. There was a report today that the mayor wants the legislature to prohibit police chases. Apparently the mayor would like to make this town a sanctuary for the perps who commit crimes elsewhere and try to return to Jackson.
I truly don't understand the mentality when you consider that most of the victims of violent crimes are black people and that most of the perps are black people. So does "black lives matter" really mean black criminals' lives matter? It certainly can't mean that black victims' lives matter.
Every uniformed officer in that video knows the addition of other agencies is not going to fix the problem.
Showtime. They should have gotten "Coach Prime" Deon Sanders to stand with them to show how serious they are about stopping crime. They will put on lots of body armor, flash blue lights everywhere, and blast the sirens all night for a couple of weeks and parade a few perps in front of the T.V. cameras. Then back to bullshit as usual. Showtime Jackson style.
When is the Christmas parade?
What good can come of ramping up law enforcement efforts when the court system will not face up to its responsibilities?
Didn't see the Mayor at this presser......maybe I just missed him. Haven't seen him in a few days. Has he been moved into a Witness Protection Program? Should we put his picture on a milk carton?
So, just lay low for a month then business as usual?
This initiative, like all the ones before it, will fail. Will they be able to apprehend the suspect more quickly? Absolutely. But this will have little to no effect on stopping the crime to begin with. True change comes from within.
@5:46 - you're 100% correct. JPD apprehends a fair share of the thugs that commit the crimes then the bleeding heart worthless judges cut them loose with not even a spank on the hand. The victims and prosecutors are left wondering "WTF" just happened?
This is like Ole Miss announcing a very tough zone defense for the next two weekends in order to tamp down on rampant scoring.
Their crime is too "encompassing?" They are surrounded? At least he now admits it.
Unless the local judicial branch is overhauled, this is all BS.
So glad I no longer live in Jackson. I keep hearing from family and friends in the metro area that the city will have a record number of homicides this year and violent crime is up. Constant boil water notices. The streets are falling to pieces. JPS is basically a breakfast and lunch daycare.
This is what being the most radical city in America looks like.
But keep your chin up, because everyone will be able to ride go karts at Metrocenter soon!
Heads up bad guys. Y'all need to lay low and hide out until November the 7th until it's all clear. Dog and pony show. If they were serious, they would have the Feds involved...but they aren't serious. Perception of protection.
JPD is fighting crime with both hands tied behind its back. The Hinds County DA's office won't prosecute most of the felony arrests that are made, and the Hinds County Circuit Court judges allow most of those who are prosecuted to return right back to the streets. Until you fix the DA's office and the Hinds County judiciary, progress can't be made.
Nothing more than the show in another ring of the Antard PR Circus.
"I, President Barack Obama, would like to announce that next Monday, we will be raiding Osama Bin Laden's bunker in Abaddabad, Pakistan. You're welcome, America."
New D.A. been doing his job. Night and day difference to predecessor.
If Mike Hurst was serious, he wouldn’t be bringing even more attention to this in the media. Or maybe he is just whiny that he didn’t get to join in the press conference with jpd? Wonder what position Mike is planning to run for next election? He’s obviously been trying to get his name circulated every chance he can.
I love how this so called administration loves to come up with "names" for all these dismal failures of his office.
We use to go out, start grabbing thugs off the streets putting them in jail and let them name the operations! We took so many guns and drugs off the streets, they had to keep two people in evidence section at night to log all the evidence in....
Ole Ed ( Buy your way outta "Jail") Peters and his hey boy Bobby "D" were so over worked it wasn't funny. They were so pissed off, because we got our warrants signed by county judges instead of city judges and they couldn't find out about the raids till after the fact.
This is the same as the socialist Democrat mayor of Oakland, Calif., last year announcing ICE raids in advance so illegal immigrant gang members could go into hiding to avoid arrest.
If you vote in Jackson this alone is reason the mayor must go. You cannot have your police force announcing to the criminals the start and end dates of a crime sweep. This would be like Churchill and Eisenhower holding a press conference on May 25, 1944 to announce that D-Day would be in Normandy on June 5. (In May they thought it would be June 5.)
If they would start pulling over the Chevrolets/Pontiacs with blue headlights, black windows and covered tags that would make a difference.
I'm thinking even the JSU traffic cop who became chief wouldn't pull a stunt like this. Of course she never appeared on camera anyway.
Instead of counting Jackson homicides, how about we count the number of chiefs of police over the past twenty five years.
