Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement and executive order.
Today, Governor Tate Reeves signed a new executive order establishing a statewide shelter-in-place for Mississippi to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of all who call our state home.
The Mississippi Department of Health determined that our state has now reached a critical point in the cycle of the outbreak, and Governor Reeves announced his decision to issue the shelter-in-place order for Mississippi at a press conference this afternoon.
Mississippi is rapidly increasing testing and strictly enforcing quarantines for anyone that investigators believe has been exposed to the virus. The shelter-in-place will begin this Friday, April 3, 2020 at 5:00 PM and be in effect until Monday, April 20, 2020 at 8:00 AM.
You can view the press conference live on our Facebook page here.
Here are Governor Reeves' remarks from today's press conference:
GOVERNOR REEVES: This is a somber time—for our country and our state. We are all in grave danger, from coast to coast. As leaders, our top priority is and always will be the safety of our citizens.
Every day, for the last several weeks, I have asked our health experts whether it is time for the ultimate action of a “shelter in place” order statewide. Yesterday, for the first time, we got the answer we had been anticipating. They told me we are now at the point in Mississippi’s cycle where such drastic restrictions are required. Today is the day. We are announcing a shelter-in-place order. It will go into effect on Friday at 5:00 PM.
I will let our top health official, Dr. Dobbs, explain his thought process behind the timing. I just want to offer a simple message to Mississippi:
This will not be easy for anyone, but we believe it is right. We know that there are many people who are scared: wondering what this means for their wages and their ability to put food on the table. We are here for you and working hard to help. Mississippi will not allow you to fall without a hand to help you back up.
We know that there are some who still do not have a healthy fear of this virus. They are wrong, and they are risking lives if they do not take this seriously.
This order will be enforced. It will be taken very, very seriously. It will not be forever. We will get through this and open our state back up as soon as our health experts tell me it is wise.
Our goal is to prevent our health care system from being overwhelmed. I pray that all of our orders and preparations will be enough. We believe that this is the right tool at the right time to save lives.
Today, this is the best course of action for Mississippi. I’ll turn it over to Dr. Dobbs for some more information.
In this latest executive order, the Governor lays out the guidelines of the statewide shelter-in-place to slow the spread of COVID-19, including:
Individuals are to stay at home except for the limited allowances in the executive order. When outside of their homes, people must follow social distancing guidelines by maintaining a 6-foot distance from others and avoid groups of 10 or more.Evictions are suspended, though people are still required to pay any rent or make any mortgage payments.
All nonessential businesses are to stop all activities other than those necessary for minimum operations (e.g. payroll, health insurance, security) and enabling employees to work from home.Social and other non-essential gatherings in groups of more than 10 people must be cancelled or rescheduled.
Restaurants and bars may only remain open for drive-thru, curbside, and/or delivery service.People may leave their homes only to perform essential activities, such as caring for someone in the vulnerable population, getting food or necessary supplies, and working for an essential business.Individual outdoor recreation is encouraged, but not group recreation or activities such as soccer or basketball games.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Jackson Jambalaya is the home of Trollfest '07. Catch this great event which promises to leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.
There will be a hugging booth where in exchange for your young son, Frank Melton will give you a loooong hug. Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. Good. Now all you 'health experts' on here can stop running your gums about "what do you want? make everyone stay at home?"
I've been a Tate detractor since the election (i posted stick a fork in tater) and this is late but better late than never.
KF - Is the text of the executive order available?
Well its about damn time. This should have happened last week.
It's coming. It's coming, and it ain't backing down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxoEtO-Y-jw
We are definitely traveling new ground. There will be pandemonium at Walmart and similar stores between now and Friday 5:00PM.
Or else what?
I think anything short of letting it do it's thing without gov. interference is wrong.
While I agree with it, did he have to get permission from Trump to do this before announcing it? This should have been a week or more ago.
It's the right thing to do here, and I'll give him credit. Obviously not shocked it took so long because Tater simply doesn't appear to be a strong leader, nor is he good at making decisions that don't benefit the rich and connected in this state (no offense, fellow commenters!). Rather, he waits until he's in a politically-safe corner to act. That's politics - which is okay, thus no matter how many die, he can say he did something; if the economy is wrecked - if it isn't already - he can point fingers.
-On another note, I was at Mardi Gras and came down ill for a few days afterwards with all of the coronavirus symptoms - as did some people I know. Anyone know if it will be possible to get tested at some point even though I'm fine and dandy now?
They aren't lying about the numbers, but you should understand what they numbers mean. There are two outcomes full recovery and death. If you die of other reasons the outcome of your Covid case is...
Life's a series of choices. Take that away and........
KF, as 3:43 asked, please publish this executive order when it becomes available. I haven’t been able to open previous orders from the SOS website, so might not be able to open this one when it is posted there. Thanks for all you do.
He talked for a solid damned hour about how effectively all agencies are working together and he pandered to others, here and there and yonder. That's what you do when you're not a leader but you're in a leadership position needing acclimation from the amen-crowd.
What Mississippians want and needed is a factual listing and position on what, exactly, is restricted and how. We never got that.
Maybe Maggie and Howard will give us a list.
MS is the caboose with no crew on board. Just along for the ride. AND at the rear on the train.
Once again Mississippi is last, or close to it.
Ignorant morons will still travel in clusters to Walmart, Kroger, sporting goods stores, and hang out in groups in their neighborhoods. The same people have been doing the exact same idiotic things for weeks and are the reason the lockdown had to be issued in the first place. It doesn't take 7 people from one family group to buy a single box of ammo at Academy or pick up a bag of chips, yet I see people parading all over town in clumps.
Where is this conservative we care about all lives attitude when we send our boys off to some war or the collateral damage it causes? Are we worried about the 2% in those cases?
I missed most of his presser.
Did he mention anything about the fiasco at Employment Security ?
Hell, it's impossible to file for emergency Unemployment because they won't even answer the phones.
And their website hasn't worked in over three weeks.
Damn, I wish I hadn't blown all my money on bullets and toilet paper.
Rachel Maddow has been calling for Tate to do this for a solid week. It was really embarrasing for MS! Glad he's finally caught on to the danger.
People should have been staying home already. What kind of person in this age of information needs the government to tell them how to stay safe?
Not up as of 5:24, but here is the SOS link
https://www.sos.ms.gov/Education-Publications/Pages/Executive-Orders.aspx
I'm going fishing
But wait. The very liberal Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania in a very large State just shut down his state. Why did he wait til April 1. Liberals have the answer don't they.
https://newsms.fm/shelter-in-place-order-which-businesses-are-defined-as-essential/
Does anyone listen to Tate speak and feel inspired or confident about anything he says?
Mississippi sucks!!
Packing up my family and moving to a state that is not run by idiots like Tate Reeves. This is such a crooked pay to play ass sucking hell hole. No wonder this state is last in everything. Goodbye Mississippi!
@ 6:22. Well......bye. Don't let the door hitcha where the good Lord splitcha.
Pretty clear KF is on Tate’s payroll. He was given vip access to the presser and even asked some questions. #fakenews
5:34, apparently you didn't hear that Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh on one end and Philly on the other, with Alabama in between.
Is the Weed store still open?
If Tate had done this 2 weeks ago like the rest of the US, LIVES WOULD HAVE BEEN SAVED and our state would be in much better shape. Instead, here we are...once again last in everything. Sorry excuse for a Governor.
7:03 hit the nail on the head.
KF probably won’t let this post, as he denies any post that I have put up that doesn’t gush about Tater.
I’m betting that Tater has a new entrance to his subdivision as an emergency item to combat Coronavirus.
All I know is if Madcow is against us we must be doing something right.
It's really simple to know what to do. Keep your a** at the house, unless it is a need, not a want, but a need to get out.
So, if the liquor stores are essential and remain open, if I get stops by the PoPo while driving around, can I just tell them I am headed to the liquor sto? This is a serious question.
Strike a trott, 6:22. MS doesnt need or want you. Hope you dont need help loading and leaving since you'll get none anyway.
Good riddance.
Doctor: Tate, this is a real danger!
Tate: would you say it's grave danger?
Doctor: is there any other kind?
Tate: I guess not. I put "grave danger" in my press release.
Doctor: ...uh...I think you missed the point...Nevermind.
I just tried to download the Emergency Unemployment PDF.
(Since the phones and website don't work)
Can someone (ANYONE) explain why on Earth during this crisis they want to know how tall I am ?
I think the question is on page two here:
https://www.mdes.ms.gov/media/178819/ui-501_form_web.pdf
So when it’s 4-20 and things are still out of control, he extends it to Mid May. How long will he kill the economy for the health of people unwilling to follow the law?
Gov. Tate Reeves didn't create Covid-19 and he is only one of a handful of historical Governors since the 19th century who have had to deal with a viral outbreak. I'm reserving my stinging criticism until the world has this plague under control. I remain focused like a laser beam on the shitshow that is the City of Jackson, the Mayor, and the City Council.
Everyone saying KF is on Tate's payroll must not know that Kingfish makes bank on this site. He has more cash and influence than Tate Reeves. JJ will be around long after Tater is SLRP'n his PERS. And anyone can buy ad space if they have the coin.
I went to the first two pressers. Governor was at neither one. You didn't say jack about it. Now if I go to one the Governor holds on the same subject, I'm on the take. You're funny.
@8:02 Sorry, but Mississippi desperately needs smart, honest, motivated, forward-thinking people, but MS residents are too ignorant to realize that.
Source: BBC News.
Los Angeles County is reopening gun shops to the public after a federal memo listed them as "essential" businesses.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva closed shops last week, but reversed course on Monday, following the guidance.
The LA county closures had prompted a lawsuit from gun rights groups.
MS is usually in the top of lists where we don’t want to be. But when ranking the states by the number of hospital per 1000 people we are 4th.
https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/rankings-and-ratings/states-ranked-by-hospital-beds-per-1-000-population.html
So let’s think about this. The FMLA Emergency Sick and Family leave is effective today. The CARES act passed on Thursday. Businesses will be able to start filing on Friday for PPP loans. It’s been planned. Governors talked to Trump two weeks ago if you remember. It’s been planned.
Breaking News. The liberal Governor of Nevada waited til April 1 to shut his state down. Another man who put his state at risk.
Tate is not a celebrity politician and I generally have not been a fan (though I voted for him); however, I think he is a lot smarter than people give him credit for. I thought he did well today. It’s a hard position to be in and really hard under these circumstances. He has my prayers.
I've heard my neighbors arguing for 3 days now. It sounds like they dont have food or rent money. They've not been to work in weeks. They are getting desperate. I wonder how long before the despair turns to violence. Hard to sleep at night with such questions.
At least he didn't issue a Shelter at the Red Roof Inn order.
Does Reeves not realize that over 35 states have already done this? California was the first state to do this on March 20. If Mississippi would have done this on March 20, we would have a small fraction of the cases we have.
Reeves, if it is your goal to keep our state dead last, you are on target. Please be forward thinking and not a dumb late follower that causes untold unnecessary deaths and infections.
Where is a list of things we are prohibited from doing? Not asking about essential businesses. It's OK to walk within eight inches of each other on walking trails but not fish even if you're separated from others by forty feet? I read about the Reservoir but what about hundreds of other lakes?
Amazed at the comments. Anonymous folks mad at KF? For selling ads? As if that's evidence of what exactly? Folks cheering for Maddow as if she's a voice of reason? Whether you're a fan of MS or not, try to make a constructive comment. What would you do differently today that is not being done?
10:27, how irresponsible of you to make up something like that to stir up hostility. If they are truly needy, post on here how we might help and I guarantee you’ll see a positive response. But of course, we know you made it up.
Tate Reeves should consider taking a Speech Class. He is extremely out of touch. Somebody else said he did good yesterday. I disagree. Folks, can you imagine Governor Cuomo and Governor Reeves in a debate? Tate would crawl in a hole and have something similar to an asthma attack. And, may not crawl out. I hope our news stations will not leak Tate’s press conferences. It is very embarrassing. And, I felt I had to vote for him.
@10:52, didn't you hear what governor said? He said listening to everyone else and shutting down earlier would've been the easy thing to do. He chose to do the hard thing. Which was to do nothing.
Uh oh?
1463, 3c[unnumbered subsection (what person did that??)] names "food and beverage stores" - by law off premise alcohol retailers are prohibited from selling any food.
They are beverage retailers, for certain, but that is not what the order says.
Add to that, the ignorant statutory policy ~"Prohibition is the official policy of the State of Mississippi" and you have a VERY poorly worded order if you intended to keep them open-weren't politically courageous enough to just say "package alcohol retailers."
10:52: Mississippi seems to have less cases than Louisiana and Alabama. Why? Because we self disciplined ourselves and self quarantined. It’s not until idiots on the Pearl River partying like it’s 2001 ruined it for everyone.
just so long as the rednecks can ride around in their 89,000$ pickup trucks they will be happy. that's all they do anyway.

5:59 - You asked what I'd do differently? First thing I'd do is add day-care to the list of mandatory closures. Why in hell should these baby-sitting, covid-factories be left to their own devices?
The second thing I'd do is reconsider and remove from the closure list...lakes and carve back in beaches and sandbars as relates to parties and social gatherings. It's a mistake to shut down fishing. If you shut down fishing, why not hunting?
Funny that to see Better Than Never in the last 48 hours chewing the same cud DonnerKay has been regurgitating for nearly 20 years.
4:23 pm Actually,there is a third outcome.
Some of those on respirators will have effects that can last 6 months and frankly, since few have been on respirators so long, there could be permanent effects that can't be overcome in rehab.
In a much shorter time on a respirator, the person has to have therapy to be able to swallow liquids again without aspirating.
There was a shortage of respirators because few patients are on them more than 3 days and even then some rehab can be needed.
And, FYI for naysayers commenting: A 6 month old baby is now the youngest death and it was in the U.S.
LET THE PURGE BEGIN
Well, 90% of statistics are 60% correct 30% of the time.
My issue with Ole Rosey Cheeks is that he was stubborn for weeks, and then folded like a lawn chair to do the very thing he was against. If that was the right thing to do all along, it indicates a character flaw.
The only good thing about Reeves announcing the order yesterday is he didn't wait until he was the absolute last governor to issue one. Not surprising that the remaining states without a stay-at-home order right now are red Trump states. So even though he's at least 2 weeks late in doing the right thing, I'll applaud him for not being a complete dummy.
I agree with the " better late than nevers"
I agree with those who think all the early decisions were made in every State with politics as the determining factor.
After the pandemic of 1918, there had been a learning curve. The world managed to contained some potentially serious epidemics from becoming pandemics.
Then, the success with spreading political misinformation became so obviously successful that our institutions failed because a statesman or woman wasn't electable...only politicians drinking party Kool Aid.They had to appeal to extreme bases that were becoming more extreme from the garbage they were being fed.
If we had responded in January when any idiot should have known that closing borders, wash your hands and don't touch your face" isn't enough if your citizens are still returning from overseas without being tested. It's not enough if someone in a line coughed on the clothing.
I know more than a few Mississippians who traveled to and from abroad and large cities in the first week of March. I asked those returning if they'd been screened in any way for the virus going or coming. They had not even been asked if they felt well.
TSA could have had a person taking temperatures via ear thermometers as part of screening for boarding and deplaning at every airport involving flying into or from places with any cases.
Our elected leaders failed us miserably.Dismissing the virus wasn't to " give us hope" or ward off "panic". You ward of panic with taking actions to protect the public and accuratingly informing them how to protect themselves. You tell everyone that if we work together, we can reduce the illness significantly and have time to develop a vaccine and can take care of those who do get sick.
Our leaders damn well knew or should have known that you can't claim no cases if you tested no one.
Now, they are re-inventing ( all of them) the timelines as they know you will not check the fake news and " spin" of their political operatives and supporters. They are casting blame to deflect from their mistakes.
The international warnings from WHO started on January 9th. We stopped travel from ONLY Chinese citizens on January 31st and did not screen our citizens returning. You can find a list of countries with confirmed cases between November and January and the U.S. and Canada are there. By Jan 31 first WHO was loudly sounding alarm bells. But, of course, we are too " exceptional" to listen to those people but we weren't listening to CDC either.
Self-proclaimed Christians ought to be able to recognize the "false prophets" among us. They still exist. This will surprise you but there were Christians in China ( not many but some) and loads of Christians in South Korea.
If you want to know which elected officials actually give a rat's ass about anyone other than themselves, check the timelines and the words from their own mouths. " We'll be fine" and " party on" was deadly incompetence.
The governor needs to specifically say which state agencies should remain open and which should close. My agency is still open full time, and does not fall under any of the categories listed as essential.
The international warnings from WHO started on January 9th.
Huh? Clearly you're joking that WHO is credible.
World Health Organization (WHO)
@WHO
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China.

Thanks for the warnings about false prophets @10:06. I've never taken any of your commentary here seriously for that very reason.
Another month of empty store shelves, yay!
In this stressful time we are living in I have felt no comfort or confidence in the words of Tater Tot. Slow to act, flippant and resigned to whatever will be will be. No fight in him. I have emailed him on two subjects. One being the forced DNR idea floating around. The second asking if he is attempting to obtain supplies of Hydrochloroquin for the state. There has been no response on either. All I came away with from his last press conference is a lot of people are going to die, not everyone is going to get a ventilator and that is just life. Totally resigned. This man is in way over his head, slow to act and seemingly doesn’t give a crap about us...as long as it doesn’t effect him. We need someone with some skills, talent, polish, professionalism and fight to get this state what it needs to save as many of our citizens as we possibly can. He needs to go home to Diddy and let an adult take over. This is serious and people are dying every day. If one of his immediate family had this awful virus do you think it would light a fire under his ass? Every life is important and should be treated that way by the people that claim to represent us.
